Diamond Hogs homer four times in run-rule of Wright State in Friday’s opener

The Arkansas lineup came alive in an easy win over Wright State at Baum-Walker.

Arkansas batters hit four home runs Friday as the Diamond Hogs run-ruled the Horizon League favorites Wright State, 12-2.

Jared Wegner hit his fourth, Caleb Cali and Peyton Stovall hit their second each and Brady Slavens knocked his first as Arkansas jumped out to a 5-0 lead after just two innings.

The Diamond Hogs scored another four innings in the eighth thanks to Wright State mistakes. Two walks, a wild pitch and two base hits were enough to build Arkansas’ lead 11-2 at that point. When Wegner hit a solo homer to center in the eighth, the run-rule kicked in.

Arkansas starter Hagen Smith worked around trouble for his 4 2/3 innings. The lefty walked five Wright batters and allowed three hits, but his eight strikeouts helped him limit the visitors to just one earned run against.

The two teams were set to be back for Game 2 from Baum-Walker Stadium on Saturday at 3 p.m.
