Devontez Walker announces himself with a breakout game for North Carolina

Walker quickly proved he belongs in the crowded WR conversation in the 2024 NFL draft

It took a lot longer than expected or hoped to see Devontez Walker in a North Carolina uniform. After finally being cleared by the NCAA to play for the Tar Heels, Walker had his breakout performance in his second game for his new team.

Walker transferred to UNC from Kent State after a great two years in the MAC. However, the NCAA held up his eligibility over a prior transfer from North Carolina Central, where he never played in a freshman season that was ultimately canceled by COVID-19. He was finally cleared and made his debut against Syracuse. A week later against a ranked Miami Hurricanes team, Walker showed why he’s popular with NFL scouts and draft analysts.

Walker lit up the Hurricanes with six receptions for 132 yards. Three of those wound up as touchdowns.

The 6-2, 200-poundee had no problem getting behind the defense with his long speed and excellent burst out of a stem. He flashed strong hands and good ball tracking, quickly showing chemistry with QB Drake Maye on some difficult downfield routes.
