If you were a kid in the late 1980s or early 1990s, chances are you wanted to be either [autotag]Bo Jackson[/autotag] or Deion Sanders when you grew up.
Both players dominated not only the gridiron but the baseball diamond and the track as well. They would also go on to play professionally in the MLB and NFL, continuing their dominance of each sport.
Now that his playing days are over, Sanders has now ventured into the world of coaching in College Football. To no one’s surprise, he is doing well in that field as the head coach of Jackson State.
Since taking over the Tigers’ program in 2020, he is 20-5 and has led Jackson State to a 7-0 record so far in 2022. Because of his success, he has been linked to Football Bowl Subdivision jobs, including the potential opening at Auburn.
In a recent interview with Tony Anderson of USA TODAY Sports’ Sports Seriously, Jackson was asked about the potential of Sanders taking over the head coaching job at Auburn should the opening happen. Jackson says that it is dependent on if Auburn, or any other program, is ready for the caliber of coach that Sanders is.
“Deion could coach anywhere in the country — college or professional level— that he wants to,” Jackson said. “It’s just whether or not the organization is ready for Prime. You can look at what he’s done for Jackson State and the short amount of time he’s been there. He has the charisma. He has what it takes because Deion, like myself, we were coached old-school and that’s the way he’s coaching his players. You’re seeing the results.”
As of the timing of this post… Nebraska, Wisconsin, Colorado, Arizona State, and Georgia Tech are the current Power Five jobs that are open. It will be interesting to see if Sanders is mentioned to be in the mix for those jobs, as well as the potential Auburn opening.
