There are many similarities between retired NFL legend Eli Manning and current New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones, but perhaps none more glaring than the 23-year-old’s refusal to throw his teammates under the bus.
Following a crushing 22-21 defeat at the hands of the Philadelphia Eagles, who rallied from 11 points down with under 5:00 remaining on Thursday night, Jones sat before the media and accepted the full brunt of the blame.
Specifically, Jones worked to deflect criticism from tight end Evan Engram, who not only dropped a pass that turned into an interception early in the first half, but dropped what would have been the game-sealing catch late in the fourth.
“I tried to get the ball out of my hands and I dropped out. I have to do a better job with that. We will go back and look at the tape and continue to learn and improve,” Jones said. “The ball was in my hand. I have to do a better job with those situations.”
Pressed further about Engram’s drop, Jones persisted.
“I have to do a better job putting the ball in a better position. The look is a specific one so I have to do a better job of recognizing that,” Jones said.
Jones could not have put the ball in a better place if he made that throw 100 more times. It was nearly perfect if not actually perfect, but the second-year quarterback would never tell you that. His team failed so therefor he failed.
Unfortunately, Jones will become the meme this week for the loss and his turf monster tumble, but it’s Engram who should be the punch line.
