Dallas Cowboys to see if Oklahoma’s Lincoln Riley ‘would actually be interested’ in the NFL, per report

Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley has been included in the wide net that the Cowboys are casting in hopes of finding a new head coach.

Ah, the joys of having a really good head coach.

Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley has been included in the wide net that the Dallas Cowboys are casting in hopes of finding a new head coach.

Rapoport says that he talked to people close to Lincoln Riley said they “didn’t think” he would be one to take an interest, but no one has said definitively no.

Riley signed a five-year, $32.5 million extension last January making him a top-10 paid college coach in the country. This past season Riley made over $6 million dollars without bonuses for winning another Big 12 title and making the College Football Playoff for the fourth time.

If Riley stays the head coach of Oklahoma through June 1, he will receive $700K as a stay bonus. If he stays head coach of the program through April 1, 2021, Riley will receive a million-dollar bonus.

The contract extension was created with NFL teams attempting to poach Riley in mind.

While Jason Garrett is still the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys until January 14, Jerry Jones and company are set on moving on once Garrett’s contract expires. Former NFL coaches Marvin Lewis and Mike McCarthy have both had interviews with the Cowboys as they begin their coaching search.

With the Cowboys head coaching gig being one of the most coveted jobs in coaching, having Riley’s name thrown into the fire should make Sooner fans grateful.
