By all accounts, the New York Giants are determined to trade down in the 2020 NFL Draft, regain some assets in the top 100 and ultimately walk away with an offensive tackle.
But might their desperation for a new offensive tackle lead them to make a tremendous mistake? The Detroit Lions apparently think so.
Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports that the Lions are attempting to play the Giants and Miami Dolphins off of each other, and expect one of the two teams to take the plunge and move up before the draft gets underway on Thursday evening.
The Detroit Lions, who hold the No. 3 overall pick in Thursday’s NFL draft, have made plans to actually draft at either No. 4 or No. 5 overall, according to an NFL source familiar with the team’s thinking.
The Lions have a degree of confidence they will be able to trade their pick to either the New York Giants or Miami Dolphins at some point either before the draft or while they’re on the clock.
No deal is said to be finalized as of this writing. That’s perhaps because the Lions may be trying to pit the Giants and Dolphins against each other.
Do you like draft smoke? Because this is draft smoke.
The Giants have no reason whatsoever to trade up a spot to land an offensive tackle when there are four quality options (and then some) to choose from. Moreover, the team is in need of additional picks in he top 100, not fewer.
Little about this report makes sense, but sometimes what general manager Dave Gettleman does makes no sense. However, this scenario should be taken with a massive grain of salt because it’s a move that would almost certainly get Gettleman fired.
