Could 49ers QB mess reunite the Bengals and Brandon Allen?

Could the 49ers end up helping the Bengals at cut downs?

Given some of the struggles of Cincinnati Bengals backup quarterbacks this summer, it would be pretty fortunate for them to somehow find their way back into a reunion with veteran Brandon Allen.

And perhaps the San Francisco 49ers will help that happen.
Those 49ers, the team Allen chose in free agency, have named Brock Purdy the starter and Sam Darnold the backup. That means Trey Lance and Allen all in a jumble on the depth chart.

A few things could happen from here. One, the 49ers find a partner for Lance, the former top-three pick, or outright release him, giving him the chance to compete elsewhere. But if not and they attempt to keep four passers, they could always try to pass Allen through waivers and onto the practice squad.

Which could be where the Bengals might want to strike if it happens.

Truth is, Trevor Siemian hasn’t looked steady as the planned Allen replacment and Jake Browning remains a developmental option, to the point Zac Taylor wanted to see Reid Seinnett in the third preseason game.

While Lance doesn’t make much sense as a Burrow backup (he’ll probably land somewhere he can compete for a starting role), Allen obviously does. It’s something for Bengals fans to watch near final cuts across the league, as it wouldn’t be all that outlandish to think they have an interest in a reunion that would make sense for both parties, given Allen would be higher up on the depth chart with the Bengals than he would be with the 49ers, too.
