Colts waive RB Deon Jackson

Colts waived UDFA RB Deon Jackson.

The Indianapolis Colts waived undrafted rookie free agent running back Deon Jackson on Tuesday as they look to get the roster down to 53 players, per Jim Ayello of The Indianapolis Star.

It was always going to be tough for Jackson to sneak onto the roster given the depth in the backfield ahead of him with Jonathan Taylor, Nyheim Hines, Marlon Mack and Jordan Wilkins ahead of him.

That said, the Colts are likely going to try to sign Jackson to the practice squad if he clears waivers. They already signed him to a large signing bonus following the 2021 NFL draft, the largest of any undrafted player they brought in.

But he also showed some promise during the preseason finale against the Detroit Lions. With the starters sitting, Jackson took 10 carries for 81 rushing yards and a touchdown while catching a three-yard touchdown pass. That helped him earn our player of the game honors.

Jackson will be highly sought after but if he clears waivers, the Colts will try hard to bring him back to the practice squad.
