Colts to re-sign OT Carter O’Donnell

The Colts are re-signing pending free-agent OT Carter O’Donnell.

The Indianapolis Colts reached an agreement with pending free-agent offensive tackle Carter O’Donnell ahead of the official start of free agency Wednesday.

O’Donnell has been with the Colts since he joined the team as an undrafted rookie free agent following the 2020 NFL draft. During that entire time, he’s been a practice squad body and has yet to see action in a regular season game. He spent the 2022 season on the injured reserve list.

Still, the Colts want to continue his development and are bringing him back for another season.

O’Donnell is likely to be a fringe roster player throughout the offseason, but the Colts clearly like him as a project.

A product of Canada, O’Donnell attended the University of Alberta, playing for the Golden Bears from 2016-2019. He attended the 2020 East-West Shrine Bowl, which is likely where the Colts first caught a glimpse of him.

There is a need for the Colts to add depth at right tackle behind starter Braden Smith while also bringing in both depth and competition at left tackle with projected starter Bernhard Raimann, who is going into his second season.

O’Donnell will be fighting this offseason for one of the final spots in the offensive line room as he hopes to be an active player for the first time in his NFL career.
