Colts select QB Desmond Ridder in latest ESPN mock draft

In ESPN’s latest mock draft, the Colts added QB Desmond Ridder.

There are several ways the Indianapolis Colts can go with their selections in the 2022 NFL draft but many analysts believe they will add a new quarterback to the mix when April arrives.

Though Carson Wentz is still technically under contract for the next three seasons, it’s likely the Colts will be getting out of it before that time arrives. Even with Sam Ehlinger on the roster, the main belief is that a quarterback will be the selection with their first pick.

In the latest mock draft from ESPN’s Jordan Reid, the Colts went with former Cincinnati quarterback Desmond Ridder as their first pick of the draft.

Don’t be surprised if the Colts take a quarterback with their first pick in this draft. General manager Chris Ballard was clearly not happy about Carson Wentz’s finish to the season. The 6-foot-3 Ridder is polished in going through progressions — he took a big step in 2021, leading the Bearcats to the College Football Playoff — and he can execute in all areas of the field. He could be an appealing backup plan to Wentz, who isn’t owed much guaranteed money on the rest of his contract.

There’s no doubt the Colts are checking all of their options when it comes to Wentz. That includes drafting a quarterback for the third year in a row.

Ridder is an intriguing prospect because of what he can do with his traits. He has the tools to be a high-upside prospect for many teams even if some mechanical work needs to be done when it comes to throwing with anticipation.

It will be interesting to see how invested the Colts are in replacing Wentz and we may not know up until the selections are made which way the team is leaning.
