College Football News Preview 2020: Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Keys To The Season

Biggest Key To The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Offense

More downfield passing would be a big plus. One of the main focuses of the offense is the way it controls the tempo and the clock, and that comes with not taking a whole lot of shots down the field. However, it would be nice to get a few more big plays to open things up.

The Chanticleers only averaged 7.1 yards per pass attempt. The 21 touchdowns and nine interceptions were good, there wasn’t enough big play consistency.

Biggest Key To The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Defense

Generate more third down stops. The Chanticleers were great at controlling the clock and keeping the ball, but they didn’t do much to get a steady pass rush outside of anything coming from the line. There also weren’t enough big plays from the secondary.

The D struggled to slow down drives, allowing offenses to convert close to 47% of their chances. CCU allowed teams to convert 50% of the time or more in five of the last eight games.

Key Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Player To A Successful Season

CB Jordan Morris, Soph.
The Chanticleers need more out of their quarterbacks with more big plays from the passing game, and more help for the pass rush outside of Tarron Jackson and CJ Brewer would be a plus, but the corners have to come up with more stops.

Morris is a tall, thin baller who got thrown into the mix late in the year and finished with 15 tackles. With Chandler Kryst and his five picks gone, the D needs a new star.

Key Game To The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Season

Arkansas State, Oct. 3
It’s.a rough early Sun Belt run with four games against four teams that went bowling last year, and none of them are Appalachian State – that comes later. The Arkansas State game is an interdivisional battle, but lose and there’s a problem with a trip to Louisiana to follow.

ASU has been an issue since CCU moved into the Sun Belt in the three years, losing all three. The first two were ugly – dropping the two by a combined score of 95-33 – but last year was a 28-27 battle.
