4. College Football News Preview 2020: Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Defense 3 Things To Know
– The offense might have had its moments, but it wasn’t consistent enough. The defense wasn’t bad, but it got ripped apart by the better Sun Belt offenses – the Chanticleers went 1-6 when the D allowed 30 points or more. With eight starters back, this should be the program’s best defense since moving up to the FBS level.
– The pass rush wasn’t all that great, and the defense didn’t do enough to get into the backfield, but senior Tarron Jackson is back after coming up with a massive season. The 270-pound defensive end is the tone-setter, and CJ Brewer is a nice 280-pounder who can get behind the line, too. There’s good size around the front three to rotate in.
– 240-pound senior and former JUCO transfer Teddy Gallagher was the team’s leading tackler as the anchor of the linebacking corps, but he’s not alone with 230-pound Myles Olufemi adding a little thump, too.
The way-young secondary of last season should be a whole lot sharper and stronger. They didn’t make a whole lot of tackles with the front six doing most of the heavy lifting, but there are enough good-sized safeties to help out a bit more. However, five of the team’s 11 interceptions are gone with Chandler Kryst done.
