The Kansas City Chiefs are bringing back a familiar face on their practice squad.
After being released by the Houston Texans on Wednesday, former Chiefs WR Chris Conley has signed with Kansas City. The Chiefs selected Conley in the third round of the 2015 NFL draft. He played four seasons in Kansas City, appearing in 59 games with 36 starts, recording 104 receptions for over 1,200 yards and six touchdown catches. He had one of his best seasons in 2018, working with Patrick Mahomes in his first season as a starter.
“Right now, he’s doing the practice squad thing and then, we’ll just see,” Chiefs HC Reid said of Conley. “It’s great to have him back. It’s great to have (Marcus) Kemp back in here. They’re familiar with what we do and they’re great guys. Good workers.”
Conley left the Chiefs as a free agent following the 2018 NFL season, signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars initially. He spent two seasons in Jacksonville, posting a career year in 2019 with 47 catches for 775 yards and five touchdowns. Conley spent the last season in Houston, where he appeared in all 16 games, catching 22 passes for 323 yards and two touchdowns.
It remains to be seen what Conley’s role will be in Kansas City, but he could prove to be valuable depth for the team. He played 211 career special teams snaps with Dave Toub in his prior stint with the team.
Conley joins former Chiefs WR Marcus Kemp, who also recently re-signed to the practice squad after spending time elsewhere. Conley replaces WR Corey Coleman, who was released from the practice squad on Wednesday.
