Four weeks ago, the Kansas City Chiefs waived defensive lineman Keondre Coburn from their active roster intending to re-sign him to their practice squad after he cleared waivers.
The Denver Broncos foiled that plan by claiming Coburn off waivers and adding him to their active roster on Oct. 20. He was inactive for each of Denver’s last three games.
When safety Kareem Jackson returned from his two-game suspension earlier this week, the Broncos made room for him on the active roster by waiving Coburn. Denver seemingly signaled its plan to re-sign Coburn to the practice squad by releasing cornerback Reese Taylor from the practice squad on the same day that Coburn was cut.
The Broncos needed Coburn to clear waivers, then he could return on the practice squad. The Chiefs stepped in.
Coburn did clear waivers, but as a free agent, he could choose which practice squad he wanted to join if given offers from multiple teams. He ultimately chose to return to Kansas City, signing with their practice squad Thursday.

After failing to get Coburn back on the practice squad, Denver re-signed Taylor to the practice squad on Thursday. Such is life for bottom-of-the-roster players in the NFL.
