Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes may have cemented himself as league MVP with his dramatic touchdown run in the fourth quarter against the Seattle Seahawks.
Not much was going right for the Chiefs’ offense during the second half of their Week 16 game against the Seahawks on Christmas Eve. It took back-to-back long completions for Travis Kelce to set the offense up in the red zone for the first time since the first half of the game.
On third-and-goal, Mahomes put his body on the line, scrambling out of the pocket to get the job done himself. He was almost tripped up by fellow Texas Tech alum Jordyn Brooks, but he made a diving attempt for the pylon. He extended and barely grazed the pylon before falling out of bounds.

This marked Mahomes’ fourth rushing touchdown of the season and his second consecutive week with a rushing score. It came also came at one of the direst moments in the game for Kansas City. The fact that this came so close to not being a touchdown makes it all the more impressive. It was a true display of football being a game of inches, but also a reminder of Mahomes’ ability as a runner.
When his team needs him to make a play with his legs, he puts them on his back. As much as the MVP is a statistical award, it’s also a narrative award. Fans and voters were just reminded again of one of the things that makes Mahomes so great.
