Chargers RB Isaiah Spiller flashing receiving ability at training camp

The Chargers’ fourth-round pick is making his case to be Austin Ekeler’s running mate.

Establishing Austin Ekeler’s backup is one of the Chargers’ top priorities this summer.

While it’s still early to gauge who has the leg up in the position battle since the pads have yet to come on, rookie Isaiah Spiller is raising eyebrows with his ability as a receiver.

Spiller has drawn rave reviews for his route-running, hands and his juice after the catch in team drills.

During his time at Texas A&M, Spiller made the most of his opportunities as a pass-catcher, hauling in 74 passes in his career, showing the quick-cutting ability to make it difficult for linebackers to keep up with him.

Spiller’s running style should quickly translate at this level, as he has excellent balance, fluid hips, and vision that allow him to see and slip through holes and shrug off arm tackles.

But with receiving being a critical role at the position in Joe Lombardi’s system, Spiller’s multi-dimensional skillset will help his case to be the second running back this season.
