CBS Sports bowl projections: Florida Gators to the New Year’s Six

CBS Sports analyst Jerry Palm tried his hand at projecting the bowl season this fall, projecting UF missing the CFP but making it to the NY6

This time around, he projects a matchup with North Carolina. The Tar Heels are coming off a 7-6 season in 2019, a vast improvement from their 2-9 finish the year before that resulted in the firing of coach Larry Fedora.

First-year coach Mack Brown, who took the job in Chapel Hill after five seasons away from coaching following his resignation at Texas in 2013.

The former national championship-winning coach’s squad is receiving considerable attention heading into 2020, with the expectation being that it will vastly improve upon last year’s finish behind the play of quarterback Sam Howell, who threw 38 touchdowns to just seven interceptions as a true freshman last season.

Howell is considered one of the nation’s top signal-callers this season.

Though it would be hard to scoff at three-straight NY6 appearances to begin coach Dan Mullen’s tenure in Gainesville, Gators fans, who are ravenous to return to the national conversation, would likely be slightly disappointed by this finish to the 2020 season, especially given the reduced field.
