Bills quarterback Josh Allen didn’t land in an individual No. 1 spot, but close enough.

CBS Sports created tiers for NFL quarterbacks and placed every projected starter in one. Those categories were:

  • Tier 1: The Big Three
  • Tier 2: Could Join Them Next Year
  • Tier 3: Intrigue with Question Marks
  • Tier 4: You Can Win With Them
  • Tier 5: Future Potential ‘Can Win With Them’ Guys
  • Tier 6: No Clue, Man

In no surprise, Allen’s top-tier status was cemented there. In even less of a shock, the other two with him are the Bengals’ Joe Burrow and Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes.

Here’s how CBS Sports explained their top tier, including Allen:

We can call them the “Elite of the Elite” or whatever you want, but these guys are simply on a different level as quarterbacks than anyone else right now. This is your top three draft picks if you’re starting a franchise. There’s a reason these guys comprised the top three spots on Pete Prisco’s Top 100 NFL Players list earlier this offseason. They are a cut above everyone else at the position right now.

Mahomes is clearly No. 1 and I wouldn’t even be opposed to giving him his own tier. But I think Burrow and Allen are close enough behind to warrant this designation. If your team has one of these three guys, you believe the Super Bowl is winnable even if things go wrong for your franchise.

With the Super Bowl aspirations the Bills have, they wouldn’t be realistic without Allen. However, there is a tough pill to swallow. Both Burrow and Mahomes are in the AFC–That path to the Super Bowl is more difficult because of that.

On the positive side, the Bills QB ranks much higher than any other quarterback from the AFC East. The closest is Aaron Rodgers from the Jets, who is labeled a third-tier player, as is the Dolphins’ Tua Tagovailoa. Patriots QB Mac Jones slides into fifth tier.
