Liberty (0-0) vs WKU (0-1) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Liberty Will Win

The offense isn’t going to skip a beat from last year’s terrific attack. Auburn transfer QB Malik Willis can move, the running backs are terrific – Joshua Mack is due for a breakout year – and even without Antonio Gandy-Golden, the receiving corps is going to be great.

WKU’s defense will keep the Flames from going off, but can the offense keep up?

Scoring on a consistent basis was an issue last year for the Hilltoppers, and getting to O going against Louisville was like pulling teeth – they finished with just 248 total yards and 21 points. However …

Week 3 Experts Picks Predictions: College Football

Why WKU Will Win

Liberty’s defense wasn’t anything special against the decent offenses, and now it’s revamping things with a whole slew of new starters in their first games.

Former Maryland QB Tyrrell Pigrome led WKU against Louisville with 68 rushing yards and there for 129 yards and a score, but the offense struggled overall. Liberty isn’t Louisville on either side of the ball.

Liberty’s biggest concern early on will be an offensive line that has to replace two starters. Welcome to DeAngelo Malone, WKU’s All-America-caliber pass rusher who led the team with eight tackles and a sack with 3.5 tackles for loss against Louisville.

Week 3 Experts Picks Predictions: NFL

What’s Going To Happen

Liberty’s offense will keep this close.

WKU didn’t play well against Louisville, and yet it was able to fight back late to at least not get its doors blown off. At home – even though home field advantage doesn’t mean as much as it normally does – the Hilltoppers will be more efficient offensively and the D will come up with just enough takeaways to overcome other issues.

Louisville (0-0) vs. WKU (0-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Louisville Will Win

Can the WKU offense keep up the pace?

It was a great season for the Hilltoppers, but it only scored more than 28 points three times and was under the mark in eight games. There might be a new quarterback, but the rest of the WKU offense should be fine. Fine probably doesn’t get it done against this Louisville attack.

The Cardinal running game is flashy and productive, and the receivers are right up there with the best in the ACC. 28 points might not get it done to hang around with this group. However …

CFN Preview 2020: Every Team Preview, Rankings, Predictions

Why WKU Will Win

The Hilltopper defense might be good enough to keep that Cardinal O in relative check.

13 of the top 15 tacklers are back around All-America one-man-wrecking-crew DeAngelo Malone on one end. As good as Louisville was last season, the offensive line was a pass protection disaster, even with new New York Jet Mekhi Becton anchoring one side.

The pressure from the front is good enough to help another terrific secondary that should win its share of battles against the Cardinal receivers.

CFN College Football Experts Picks, Week 2

What’s Going To Happen

It’s going to be a frustrating day for Louisville, who won 38-21 last year.

The offense will get going early, but it’ll stall too often against the WKU defense that should be strong on third downs and should get to QB Micale Cunningham enough to be annoying.

However, the Cardinals will step it up late to pull away. It’ll be a good first victory against a team strong enough to be in the Conference USA championship mix.

5. Conference USA 2020 Preview: The League Has Found Its Niche

We know what Conference USA is in the college football world.

It’s certainly not going to be like the American Athletic Conference and start inviting itself into a club without the password, and it’s not quite as strong as the Mountain West, but it’s ahead of the MAC and Sun Belt.

And that’s just fine. The league is going to be plenty fun where it is, especially this season.

It proved itself here and there last year – WKU whacked around Arkansas, and Louisiana Tech stunned Miami in the Independence Bowl – but assuming it’ll be a self-contained conference in this craziest of seasons, it’s equipped to stand out from the pack even without all the dates against the Power Fivers.

It’s set up for a good season with the potential for two terrific division races.

[jwplayer zttcjcuk]

The power is mostly in the East with Florida Atlantic, WKU and Marshall all good enough to win it, and with Middle Tennessee and FIU right there with a shot to knocking off the Owls for the top spot. The West has killers up top in UAB, Louisiana Tech and Southern Miss in what should be a whale of a three-way battle.

As always, though, Conference USA has it’s issues with the bottom teams. To get into the discussion to be better than the Mountain West, the league needs UTEP, UTSA and Rice to be more than roadkill for the top teams. It would help if Old Dominion bounced back from a rough year.

[lawrence-related id=516260]

There should be around nine, maybe ten teams all good enough play with everyone else. Plenty of teams have a shot, several young and new coaches are joining the fun to go along with the elder statesmen, and most of all, this will be among the competitive and unpredictable leagues going.

2020 Preseason CFN Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year

QB Chris Robison, Jr. Florida Atlantic
It’s going to be an interesting battle to be the top Conference USA offensive player.

Middle Tennessee’s Asher O’Hare will likely be the league’s biggest all-around statistical star quarterbacks, several running backs will be in the mix for the top honor, and the league is loaded with great receivers.

But watch out for the First Team All-Conference USA quarterback at Florida Atlantic to once again be special.

He completed 62% of his passes for over 3,700 yards with 28 touchdowns and six picks, and he ran for two scores as he led the Owls to the Conference USA title. Now he gets to help was in the transition to the Willie Taggart era.

2020 Preseason CFN Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year

DE DeAngelo Malone, Sr.
The 6-4, 230-pounder should again be among the nation’s best pass rushers, as well as Conference USA’s best defensive player.

Very experienced, very quick, and with a great closing ability, the NFL-caliber end might not be all that bulky, but he has no problem getting physical with 99 tackles last season with 11.5 sacks and 21 tackles for loss. He even returned a fumble for a score.

Expect him to once again be a devastating force behind the line.

No one knows what’s going to happen to the 2020 college football season. We’ll take a general look at where each team stands – doing it without spring ball to go by – while crossing our fingers that we’ll all have some well-deserved fun this fall. Hoping you and yours are safe and healthy.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: WKU Hilltoppers Offense 3 Things To Know

– The offense didn’t crank up 637 points like the 2016 version did, but in the first year under head coach Tyson Helton it was much improved over the 2018 O that didn’t get going until it was too late.

However, there were too many turnovers, nothing with the running game, and for all the consistency, there wasn’t a whole lot of explosion.

The offense has to do more than just hit single – going up with at least 20 points every time out but the 17-8 win over Army was nice, but it’s time to start scoring.

CFN in 60 Video: Louisville Preview
WKU at Louisville, Sept. 26
[jwplayer RWdQfwvm]

The quarterback situation is … interesting. Starter Ty Storey is done, and backup Steven Duncan is transferring out. In comes Tyrrell Pigrome from Maryland, with the type of dual-threat talent to add something more to the attack, even though Storey ran for seven scores. However, Pigrome has had issues staying healthy, putting the pressure on junior Davis Shanley to be ready to go, if he doesn’t take the starting gig.

The receiving corps poses the 94 catches and playmaking ability of Lucky Jackson, but 5-9, 180-pound Jahcour Pearson is another speedy option coming off a 76-catch season with a team-high seven touchdowns.

There’s enough experience returning to be okay, and 6-5, 235-pound sophomore TE Joshua Simon has all-star potential after grabbing 30 passes for 430 yards and four scores, but there’s not a ton of size among the group.

Gaej Walker is the star of the show with his 1,208 rushing yards and catching ability, but the O needs more out of KeShawn McClendon – who missed most of last season – and come up with a far better rotation. Walker handled 241 carries, and McClendon was the next most worked back with just nine.

The O line that was second in Conference USA in sacks allowed and No. 1 in fewest tackles for loss given up gets back four starters, but loses some depth to the transfer portal. If promising sophomore Gunner Britton or junior Mason Brooks – they’re both around 6-6 and 290 pounds can fill in for Miles Pate at right tackle, the line is set.

WKU Football Schedule 2020 Prediction, Best Case Scenario

9-3: The Hilltoppers pull off a shocking split on the road against Indiana and Louisville, gets by Middle Tennessee and UAB, and goes on a run from there. There’s at least one big slip along the way, but a win over Florida Atlantic on the road leads the way to an East title and an appearance in the Conference USA championship.

WKU Football Schedule 2020 Prediction, Worst Case Scenario

4-8: WKU loses all three road games over the first half of the season and drops the date at Marshall to put the pressure on the second half of the year. A loss at FAU and home loss to Southern Miss use towards a losing season.
