[jwplayer Hn8O2tae]

Georgia State 39, WKU 21: LendingTree Bowl

10. It doesn’t matter if it’s the LendingTree, the Dollar General, the GoDaddy or the GMAC – this has been a rough bowl watch for a long, long time. With this 18-point Georgia State win, that makes it five years in a row of games decided by double-digits. Some of these have been better than the final score, but ever since the classic Byron Leftwich Marshall 64-61 overtime win over East Carolina, 16 of 19 have been relative blowouts.

9. This got a bit chippy. There weren’t a ton of penalties – 15 in all – but these two started to get into it as the game went on. WKU got hit with the nine penalties – three more than Georgia State – and was more mistake-prone overall. More on that in a moment.

8. The Georgia State offense was a different animal this year when Destin Coates was able to get moving. The junior RB hit the 100-yard mark four times, and all when he got the ball 20 times or more. He ran 23 times for 117 yards and a touchdown. Is scoring dash at the end of the first quarter go it all going for the Panthers.

7. Georgia State’s Cornelious Brown should be one of the Sun Belt’s biggest stars in 2021. The QB had his problems with picks here and there – he threw one against WKU early on when he tried to make something big happen – and he didn’t get going on the ground with just 40 yards, but he threw for 232 yards and three touchdowns. He was in control, he kept the chains moving, and again, the big mistakes weren’t there.

6. Turnovers and mistakes continue to be a killer this bowl season – WKU was -2 in turnover margin. QB Tyrrell Pigrome completed 17-of-33 passes for 180 yards, and he ran for a score. There was one big problem, actually two – his two interceptions. Before this, he threw 264 passes in the regular season with no picks.

5. The WKU pass rush stepped it up late in the season, but it only generated one sack against the Panthers. However, there were plenty of big plays made behind the line – ten tackles for loss – and it wasn’t nearly enough. Third down stops were too much of an issue, and they were a big problem against this Panther offense.

4. Georgia State did a better job at controlling the game. It had the ball ten minutes longer, converted 13-of-21 third down tries, and the style never allowed the Hilltoppers to make much of a push after going on a 27-0 run in the first half.

3. Going into next year, WKU needs more of a running game. It averaged under four yards per carry for the season, and while it got the mark against Georgia State, it only came up with 104 yards. There were three touchdowns, and CJ Jones was able to tear off a big scoring dash, but there wasn’t enough of a push.

2. The lack of a consistent WKU offensive punch turned out to be a big deal once again, coming up with just 284 yards. Blowing up on FIU and Charlotte to close out the regular season was nice, but the programs needs a positive identity and style to move the ball more consistently. When the game was starting to get away, there wasn’t the ability to slow things down or answer. It was the sixth time the Hilltoppers gave up more than 21 points, and they lost all six.

1. It’s a winning season for Georgia State. Don’t dismiss just how big a deal that is to a program, especially in this insane season. It was able to finish 6-4 with this win and close out with four wins in the last five games. The team was consistent, it was occasionally explosive, and now it’s a bowl winner two years in a row for the second time in four seasons.

Three Reasons Why You Should Watch The SERVPRO First Responder Bowl

It’s just the second bowl game in the young history of UTSA football – losing the first in 2016 – but first year head coach Jeff Traylor has built up something positive in a hurry, starting with the running game that dominated late in the season. Unfortunately, he’s not going to get his chance to be out there after testing positive for COVID.

Louisiana’s running style under head coach Billy Napier has been among the nation’s most effective over the last few years. UTSA might be relatively new to the bowl world, but this is the third bowl in a row under Napier. His team is going to bring the attitude along with RB Elijah Mitchell and a great backfield.

UTSA will be fired up to play in this, but Louisiana is going to play disrespected. It beat Fiesta Bowl-bound Iowa State 31-14, and it’s only loss of the season is to unbeaten Coastal Carolina. Nothing against this bowl, but the Ragin’ Cajuns deserved a brighter spotlight against a bigger opponent. Now they have to show why.

Georgia State (5-4) vs WKU (5-6) Game Preview

Three Reasons Why You Should Watch The LendingTree Bowl

WKU went from having no offense to rolling late in the year, winning its last three games and getting the attack working in the last two to help earn the bowl nod. It might not bring a ton of high-flying O, but it’s a well-coached team under Tyson Helton that pulled out one of the more fun bowl games of last year – a 23-20 win over Western Michigan. The effort will be there.

If WKU doesn’t bring the offense, Georgia State will. The Panthers – led by dangerous freshman QB Cornelious Brown – are versatile, explosive, and can put up points and yards in bunches. The program has just one bowl win in its young history – a 2017 victory over WKU.

Conference USA is getting its shot in this bowl for the first time since 2011 – the Sun Belt has owned the thing through a variety of bowl name changes ever since. No pressure, Georgia State, but the conference has won five straight and seven of the last nine in Mobile.

WKU (4-6) vs Charlotte (2-3) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why WKU Will Win

After a massively disappointing start for a program that appeared to be on the rise, it has finally started to have some fun with two straight wins and …

POINTS!

A god of a under play for those who care about point totals, WKU finally busted out in a 38-21 win over FIU a few weeks ago.

Overall, the Hilltopper defense has been strong enough to keep the team in most games, doing a great job in the secondary – for the most part – for a D that’s allowing just 339 yards per game.

Charlotte doesn’t have a pass rush, there’s little in the way of run defense, and the offensive line allows too many plays in the backfield at key times.

WKU doesn’t have to blow up, but as long as it’s opportunistic, it could pull this off. But …

Week 14 College Schedule

Why Charlotte Will Win

Don’t get too fired up about the 38 put on the board by the Hilltopper O against FIU. The offense still didn’t really work.

WKU didn’t get to 280 yards of total offense in the game and has only hit the 300-yard mark twice all year.

Charlotte hasn’t been able to play in over a month – it missed all of November – but before the break, the offense was able to work a bit against the mediocre defenses.

It doesn’t take a whole lot of points to stress-test WKU. At home, and after so long without playing this is going to be one fired up team out of the box.

CFN Experts Picks: College

What’s Going To Happen

Charlotte was better than it seemed before its hiatus. The 49ers played four of their first five games on the road and lost to Appalachian State and Florida Atlantic in good fights – both good teams – and to Duke.

WKU’s offense will score points, but the offense won’t do enough to pull this off even though Charlotte will turn the ball over just enough to make this interesting.

WKU (3-6) vs FIU (0-4) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why FIU Will Win

WKU really, really, really doesn’t score.

The Hilltoppers were struggling through the first part of the season just to get to 20 yards, but they did it in the first three games, but that looks like Christmas after the last six games.

Try this out. WKU scored 67 points total in its last six games. Kent State scored 69 points in its win over Akron on Tuesday night.

There’s little running game, no real passing attack, and there aren’t enough third down conversions to keep things moving. Throw in the giveaways, and FIU has a shot to stay in this game through the full 60 minutes, because …

CFN Experts Picks, Predictions: Week 12

Why WKU Will Win

It’s not like FIU is blowing off anyone’s doors with its offense, either.

It was able to hang around with Liberty and bring a good fight in the 36-34 loss, but it lost to Jacksonville State – FIU is the only FBS team to lose to an FCS team – 19-10, and managed just 19 points in last week’s loss to FAU.

WKU might not score, but the defense is doing a nice job at at least keeping games alive by allowing ten points or fewer in three of the last four games – the team has a game right at its own size.

What’s Going To Happen

WKU might not have an offense, but it’s generally part of a grand design that revolves around one of the best defenses in Conference USA. The pass defense is the best in the league, and FIU doesn’t have the ground attack to get anything going consistently.

Southern Miss (2-5) vs WKU (2-6) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Southern Miss Will Win

Score 15 points and you probably have the Hilltoppers.

WKU was able to score a few points early on in the season, but it hasn’t pushed past 14 points in any of the last five games.

The offense continues to be among the least effective in college football – it has only thrown for over 200 yards once and hasn’t ran for more than 160 – with way too many mistakes, no ground game, and a total inability to convert on third downs.

Southern Miss has a world of problems, but it’s able to complete a downfield pass and stretch the field a bit. The Golden Eagles will get the O going, but …

Week 11 Schedule, Predictions, Lines

Why WKU Will Win

WKU, if you ever had any sort of a passing attack to get moving, this would be the time to unleash it.

The Golden Eagles were able to hold down North Alabama, but everyone else’s passing game is getting fat off this secondary. Want to run? USM’s defense will be happy to oblige.

There’s almost no consistent pressure in the backfield and the key third down stops are a rumor. The biggest issue, though, is the inability to hang on to the ball, turning it over seven times in the last two games going a -5 in turnover margin.

WKU could use the help.

CFN College Football Experts Picks

What’s Going To Happen

Can WKU finally start moving the chains and put up some points? The defense will force enough mistakes to give the offense a few good chances. It’s WKU, so the O will blow it, of course, but it’ll still be able generate just enough scoring drives leading to late field goals to hold on after an early touchdown.

Florida Atlantic (2-1) vs WKU (2-5) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Florida Atlantic Will Win

So Florida Atlantic isn’t Marshall this year – that’s okay. This is still among the best teams in Conference USA, it was able to pound past a not-awful UTSA, and it’s playing enough defense to hold down most offenses.

WKU’s O isn’t like most offenses.

It’s awful at converting on third downs, it averages just 275 yards per game, and scoring is optional, failing to get past 14 points in any of the last four games. The FAU pass rush and defensive front should be able to keep WKU being WKU. But …

Why WKU Will Win

It’s not like Florida Atlantic’s offense is going off.

The Owls have been able to run a little bit, but there’s no real passing game to worry about and not enough of a downfield attack.

The WKU defense hasn’t been bad. It hasn’t been enough to overcome the lack of an offensive punch, but the secondary is fine and the pass rush that’s been a bit disappointing – being very kind here – should be able to rise up from time to time.

What’s Going To Happen

Be absolutely stunned if this is anything like a fun shootout.

The FAU running game will be okay, the pass rush will come up with stop after stop, and it’ll survive what will be a surprisingly entertaining – but low scoring – game.
