New England Patriots (2-3) vs San Francisco 49ers (3-3) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why San Francisco Will Win

The New England offense isn’t working without a passing game. The Patriots like to run, they like to get Cam Newton being Cam Newton in the red zone, and the hope is for the defense to take care of the rest. However, the offense stopped scoring and it needs takeaways to help the cause.

The Patriots are last in the NFL in passing scores and haven’t hit the 200-yard mark in the last three games. Worst of all, the turnovers are coming with seven in the last two games. San Francisco’s pass defense has been terrific, not allowing more than 200 yards in five of the last six games.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why New England Will Win

This is one flaky San Francisco team.

Injuries had a lot to do with it, but just when everything seems like it’s falling apart with a disastrous day against Miami, the team is almost flawless in a win over the Rams.

Offensively, forget the running game. The Patriots are second in the NFL in run defense, have only allowed one rushing score, and have yet to allow more than 154 yards on the ground. That means it’s all on …

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

Fantasy Football Player To Watch

QB Jimmy Garoppolo, San Francisco
It’s his day against his old team, but that can’t matter. He has to be on considering the ground game isn’t going to work, and he has to keep using George Kittle after a big performance against the Rams.

Garoppolo was awful against Miami – the ankle injury was an issue – and he bounced back to throw three scores against LA. If he doesn’t throw for three scores against the Patriots, the 49ers lose.

What’s Going To Happen

Garoppolo won’t throw three touchdown passes.

San Francisco has been fantastic in its two east coast road games, but those were against the New York teams. The New England defense will keep being fantastic, and the offense will finally start to kick in just enough to take an early lead so the D can handle Jimmy G.

Los Angeles Chargers (1-4) vs Jacksonville Jaguars (1-5) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Los Angeles Will Win

Now these are the Jacksonville Jaguars we were expecting from the start.

This was supposed to be one of the lead dogs in the Tank For Trevor (Lawrence) race, but they screwed it up with a win over Indianapolis that now appears to be a total aberration.

The offense has stalled with fewer than 17 points in three of the last four games, and the defense has become a disaster at allowing big plays down the field. Jacksonville allows a whopping 8.2 yards per throw, and Justin Herbert and the Charger offense are rolling through the air.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Jacksonville Will Win

It’s not like the Chargers are winning, either.

They’ve played in two overtime games, and they’ve been interesting and entertaining, but they’re not good at winning with four straight losses. And why? This plays like a team that doesn’t know how to win. That’s why happens when you have a rookie quarterback going against Patrick Mahomes, Tom Brady and Drew Brees.

Jacksonville is good enough offensively on third downs to keep things moving, and while the team has problems with the whole winning thing, Gardner Minshew is fearless when it comes to try making the big throw.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

Fantasy Football Player To Watch

TE Hunter Henry, Los Angeles
The Jaguars have the 30th ranked defense against tight ends, and now they’re about to be picked apart again. Henry has been targeted at least seven times in four of the last five games. With Keenan Allen not at 100%, and receiving threat Austin Ekeler still out, Henry will get increased targets and should flirt with 100 yards and a TD.

What’s Going To Happen

It’ll be a fun and wild shootout between two bad football teams. Jacksonville will open it up enough to get the passing game rolling, but Herbert and the Charger offense will blow up for over 400 yards with all of the top targets getting to have some fun.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-2) vs Las Vegas Raiders (3-2) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Tampa Bay Will Win

The defense is a total killer.

The offense has been just fine with the passing game good enough to get by, but it’s the NFL’s No. 1 defense that’s making Tampa Bay a real, live Super Bowl contender. And it helps to be getting Antonio Brown, too – but not yet.

The Raiders aren’t forcing enough takeaways with just three on the year, the tun defense has been good enough, and now the offense has to deal with a D that hasn’t allowed 250 yards of total offense in three of the last four games.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Las Vegas Will Win

The Raiders are rested, they’re at home, and they’re getting a Tampa Bay team that went to Chicago, flew home to get up for Green Bay, and now has to go to Las Vegas. Throw in the date against Denver, and this is the team’s third game in a different time zone in the last five weeks.

How do you beat the Bucs? You have to own third downs, and Vegas is one of the best teams in the NFL at keeping things moving and owning the clock. The passing game is good enough at home to keep pushing.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

Fantasy Football Player To Watch

RB Ronald Jones, Tampa Bay
This was supposed to be the Leonard Fournette running game, and Tom Brady is going to be the star of any attack, but Jones has been the steady force over the last three games. He was a good part of a rotation, and then he ran for three straight 100-yard games with two touchdown runs last week against Green Bay.

What’s Going To Happen

The Buccaneers were able to jump all over Aaron Rodgers last week in blowout win over the Packers, and they’ll do it again this week. However, Jon Gruden and the coaching staff have had two weeks to prepare for this, and they’re about to pitch a defensive gem. It won’t be a high-flying show, but it’ll be wildly entertaining.

Chicago Bears (5-1) vs Los Angeles Rams (4-2) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Chicago Will Win

The Bears continue to find a way. They might not be pretty, and they might not have enough of a running game to matter, but the defense continues to be terrific – especially in the secondary – and it’s doing an amazing job on third downs. As long as the turnovers are kept to a bare minimum, the Bears have the right formula.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Los Angeles Will Win

This is about as one-dimensional an NFL team as the Rams will face. It’s not that Chicago doesn’t want to run; it just can’t do it. There aren’t enough attempts, and there isn’t any sort of a commitment to the ground game, and this isn’t the game to get everything healthy – the Ram run defense has been consistently solid all year.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

Fantasy Football Player To Watch

TE Jimmy Graham, Chicago
Avoid the Bears defense if you can, especially if you have Ram receivers. On the other side, though Graham is getting targeted six times a game, and now he’s going against an LA D that just got roughed-up by George Kittle. Graham has four TDs in six games.

What’s Going To Happen

Again, the Bears are finding ways to win, and every time it seems like it’s about to get tagged by a team that’s due for a big performance – like Atlanta in Week 3 and Carolina last week – but this time that’s actually the case. The Rams are coming off an offensive clunker against San Francisco, but the D will take over in this.

New York Giants (1-5) vs Philadelphia Eagles (1-4-1) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why New York Will Win

It’s not like the Eagles are going to get out to a big lead and then run away and hide.

Philadelphia can’t come up with a consistent running attack – even though it came up with a few big things in last week’s loss to Baltimore – and the turnovers keep on coming.

They’ve slowed down a bit, but the Eagles have given it up 12 times so far and are getting killed in the turnover margin. They’ve only one the stat once so far this year, and that’s when they were a +2 in the lone win over San Francisco.

The Giants need all the breaks they can get. They have to force mistakes – coming up with two takeaways in each of the last two weeks – and capitalize on everything because …

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Philadelphia Will Win

This dog of a Giant offense just won’t hunt.

It’s actually moving the ball well on key third down plays, but it’s simply not going anywhere. Daniel Jones will connect on just enough downfield plays to make defenses worry a wee bit about the deep ball, but he has only thrown three touchdown passes on the year for the league’s worst passing game.

Forget about the Giant running game – there isn’t enough of one to worry about against this Philly defensive front – and watch out for the big, gashing runs from the Eagles, even with Miles Sanders hurt. That means it’s up to …

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

Fantasy Football Player To Watch

RB Boston Scott, Philadelphia
Forever known as a fantasy Championship Week free agent legend by those who go through Week 17, he ran for 54 yards and three touchdowns in the regular season finale against the Giants last season. This year he only has 21 carries for 67 yards, but with Sanders banged up, it’s his ground game to take over.

What’s Going To Happen

The Eagles have a serviceable enough offense to control the game on the ground. The Giants don’t have anything offensively to rely on. As long as Philadelphia isn’t royally screwing up with a slew of turnovers, it’ll grind its way to a win.

5. Winners & Losers From Week 7

The One Really Big Thing
Most Overrated Thing
Most Underrated Thing
What It All Means, Week 7

Winner: SEC streak-enders

Kentucky beat Tennessee 17-12 back in 1984. That was the last time the Wildcats won in Knoxville and are now 3-33 overall in the series since then with a 34-7 win over the Vols.

While that was happening, South Carolina got by Auburn 30-22. The last time those two played was back in 2014, and the last time the Gamecocks beat the Tigers was … 1933, 16-14. USC had never beaten Auburn in Columbia.

Loser: The first half of SEC Mississippi games

Ole Miss ripped through Alabama two weeks ago. This last weekend? It was down 20-0 at halftime to Arkansas in the 33-21 loss. Mississippi State was down 14-0 to Texas A&M at halftime, and didn’t get its first offensive score – it came up with a pick six in the third – until the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs have now managed just seven points in the first halves of their last three games.

Winner: North Texas offense

In the 52-35 win over Middle Tennessee, QB Jason Bean threw for 181 yards and two scores and ran for a game-high 169 yards and three touchdowns. The team ripped through the Blue Raiders for 768 yards of total offense with 306 though the air and 462 on the ground.

Loser: Duke ball security

The mistakes just aren’t stopping. The Duke defense hasn’t been bad at taking the ball away, but the offense has turned it over 22 times in just six games. NC State came up with three interceptions in the 31-20 win, making this the fourth time in five games the Blue Devils turned it over three times or more.

Winner: Virginia Tech rushing offense

No. 2 in the nation behind Air Force – who only played one game – in rushing yards per game, the Virginia Tech ground attack is averaging 312 yards with 15 scores. In the 40-14 win over Boston College, the Hokies came up with their third 300-yard rushing day of the season with 250 yards and four scores.

Loser: Mississippi State rushing offense

Mike Leach offenses are at least supposed to be productive on the ground when they try to run. It didn’t help that star RB Kylin Hill was out against Texas A&M, but now the Bulldogs are dead last in the nation in rushing, averaging 1.54 yards per carry with just 114 yards. They averaging 28.5 yards per game on the ground – ULM is the second-worst team averaging 56.2 yards.

Winner: QB Dillon Gabriel, UCF and QB Brady White, Memphis

All Gabriel did against Memphis was throw for 601 yards and six touchdowns, and run for 49 yards and a score … and lose.

All White did was throw for 486 yards and six touchdowns, and run for 39 yards and a score … and win.

In all, UCF and Memphis combined for 1,501 yards of total offense in the 50-49 Tiger win.

Loser: UMass Minutemen

UMass wasn’t going to play this year, and then the independent decided to give it a go with a flexible schedule. It all started against Georgia Southern, and … 41-0. The Minutemen came up with 191 total yards – most of them late – couldn’t get a first down early on, and got hammered by the Eagles for 309 rushing yards.

To be positive, which five coaches lead the way in the Coach of the Year race?

The hot seat rankings are done in two ways. First, the five coaches who need a win for job security, and then the five coaches who aren’t in any real danger of being fired but could use a massive win.

[jwplayer IoO8SIHX]

CFN Coach of the Year Race

Coaches On The Hot Seat: Win, Or Else

5. David Cutcliffe, Duke

2-10. That’s what Duke is in its last ten games, and it’s 9-17 since starting out 4-0 in 2018. The offense has given it up a whopping 22 times so far with three picks in the 31-20 loss to NC State. On the plus side, the Blue Devils get three straight home games against Charlotte, North Carolina and Wake Forest. Win two of those three games, and everything starts to change.

4. Rick Stockstill, Middle Tennessee

Just when it seemed like things might start to bounce back for the Blue Raiders after a win over FIU, pffffffffffft – the air came out of the balloon. North Texas is bad at college football this year, but it just went into Murfreesboro and left with a 52-35 win. The program is now 3-10 in its last 11 games, and two of those wins are against FIU.

3. Dino Babers, Syracuse

Yeah, the Orange don’t have starting quarterback Tommy DeVito around anymore, but that’s partly because the offensive line hasn’t been fixed after years of issues. Losing to a bad Duke team at home by 14 was bad enough, but getting dropkicked by 17 against Liberty is a whole other level of yuck. Oh great … next up is a trip to Clemson.

2. Gus Malzahn, Auburn

You can’t have a column about hot seat coaches without Gus Malzahn after an Auburn loss, but this is different. The offense isn’t clicking like it should, the 2-2 record should be 1-3 after catching a colossal break against Arkansas, and getting whacked around by South Carolina is never going to make the base happy. Lose at Ole Miss next week and this gets really interesting.

1. Matt Viator, ULM

After starting the season 0-5 and going 2-9 in the last 11 games, Viator and the Warhawks have to get hot. Lose at South Alabama this week, and there’s a big, bit problem with no obvious winnable games the rest of the way. Be shocked if ULM isn’t a double-digit underdog in the last seven outings.
