College Football Playoff Rankings: 5 Random Day After Thoughts

CFP Rankings: Reaction to every slot
College Football Playoff Rankings

5. Oklahoma is more than okay, even at 9

13-0 Big 12 Champion Oklahoma is absolutely in the 2021-2022 College Football Playoff.

There’s ZERO chance it’s out if it wins out. None. No way, no how, and in no reasonable or rational scenario would the College Football Playoff committee leave out an unbeaten Power Five conference champion – that includes Wake Forest, by the way, but that’s not happening.

Don’t get into any sort of a twist at OU being at 9 to start. It still has to play Baylor (12), Oklahoma State (11), and it probably has to deal with one of those two a second time in the Big 12 Championship – if all goes well.

By the way, it’s not a total lock like 13-0 would be, but 12-1 Big 12 Champion Oklahoma would almost certainly get in, too.

Week 8 Roundup What It All Means
CFN 1-130 Rankings | Bowl Projections
Week 8 scoreboard, all the predictions
Week 8 opening lines | AP | Coaches
Big Game Reaction: Illinois, Oregon, Pitt, more

We lost three teams from the College Football Playoff chase – Penn State, NC State, and Coastal Carolina – and now, out of the 130 teams playing FBS football, we’re down to 21.

The first College Football Playoff rankings come out next week, but remember, they’re just a snapshot of the moment.

The theories and beliefs still hold – win your Power Five conference championship, do it with one loss or go unbeaten, and you’re almost certainly in.

So who’s realistically still left? We rank all 21 teams that have a path to get into the playoff going from those with no shot to those who control their own destiny.

This isn’t a College Football Playoff ranking projection – that’s coming. This is all based on likelihood of getting in and the clearest paths to getting in.

21. UTSA Roadrunners (8-0)

There’s a win over Illinois on the resumé, and it’s possible to roll through the rest of an easy schedule to get into the discussion, but it would take a meltdown of the entire college football world for UTSA to get into the final four. However, making into a New Year’s Six game isn’t out of the question if Cincinnati and San Diego State both lose.

20. San Diego State Aztecs (7-0)

There just aren’t any style points. The Aztecs win with the nation’s best run defense, a tough offense that doesn’t make mistakes, and repeat steps 1 and 2.

Wins over Utah and Arizona aren’t enough, but the schedule overall is better than Cincinnati’s. It won’t matter for the College Football Playoff chase, but the Aztecs are right there for a possible New Year’s Six bowl by winning out.

19. SMU Mustangs (7-0)

It’s the team we’re not talking about  … yet.

SMU’s big win is at TCU, but it’s rolling through its schedule – a slate that makes Cincinnati’s look like an SEC West team – but there’s a trip to Cincinnati in late November. Throw in dates with Houston and Memphis on the road and UCF and Tulsa at home, and this could be the it team by the time the showdown with the Bearcats rolls around.

18. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (6-1)

Notre Dame is sort of stuck because it needs Cincinnati to lose twice. Or, it needs Cincinnati to rip through the rest of its schedule, and it needs the Power Five conference championships to be in meltdown mode. With that said, a few style points wouldn’t hurt, especially considering there won’t be one great win on the resumé by going 11-1.

17. Texas A&M Aggies (6-2)

Here’s how this has to work. Win out, hope for one more loss by Alabama along the way, beat unbeaten No. 1 Georgia in the SEC Championship. Do that, in a four-best-team way, a two-loss team will be in the College Football Playoff for the first time.

16. Ole Miss Rebels (6-1)

The loss to Alabama is a problem – Ole Miss can’t get to the SEC Championship if the Tide don’t lose again – but if it wins out against a decent slate that includes Texas A&M and road dates at Auburn and Mississippi State, and if Alabama wins the SEC Championship over Georgia, in a theoretical way, Ole Miss might have to be considered one of the four best teams.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

New Orleans vs Seattle Game Preview

Why New Orleans Will Win

The week off will work wonders.

It’s not like the team was limping in the bye – it rolled Washington in Week 5 – but getting two weeks to get ready for Geno Smith and not Russell Wilson should make this a whole lot easier.

What’s Seattle doing without Wilson? It’s pounding and trying to pound some more to take the pressure off of Smith. It almost worked in the Sunday night game against Pittsburgh in a physical overtime battle.

The Seahawks catch a break of an extra day, but the Saint defense that’s the best in the league at allowing fewest yards per carry and second overall in run defense should be that much tougher. But …

Week 7 CFN NFL Expert Picks

Why Seattle Will Win

The Seahawks have a few parts back and ready to go for the ground game. Chris Carson might still be out with a neck injury, but Rashaad Penny is back along with Alex Collins from a hamstring injury.

Geno Smith might not be Russell Wilson, but he’s had time to get settled in, it’s his gig now for the next few weeks, and outside of a few key mistakes, he wasn’t bad against Pittsburgh.

For all of the defense’s problems, it’s great on third downs, it’s going against a New Orleans offense with a mediocre passing game, and …

What’s Going To Happen

It’ll come down to who has the better ground attack, and it’ll be New Orleans.

Alvin Kamara should go off on the league’s 30th-ranked rushing D, the Saint defense has only allowed more than 100 yards once, and it’ll be an interesting grind with the rested team overcoming the early boost from the Seahawk crowd.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Indianapolis vs San Francisco Game Preview

Why Indianapolis Will Win

If it wasn’t for that Derrick Henry guy, Jonathan Taylor would be getting all the love as the NFL’s hottest running back. He’s coming off of two 100-yard games in the last three with four touchdowns, a 100-yard receiving day in the one game he didn’t hit the mark on the ground, and he took a pass for a score.

The 49ers have an okay run defense, but it allowed over 100 yards in each of the first four games before holding down Arizona a few weeks ago in a tough 17-10 loss.

Taylor is rolling, the Colt passing attack has been okay, and the defense is taking the ball away in bunches with 12 in the first six games. However …

Week 7 CFN NFL Expert Picks

Why San Francisco Will Win

The 49ers are rested.

The Colts are on their fourth road trip in five weeks, while San Francisco has got a desperately needed early bye week after a rough three-game losing streak.

Indianapolis has been solid against the run – it only allowed one rushing touchdown so far – but the 49er running game has been consistently strong, rooking RB Elijah Mitchell appears to be back and fine after his shoulder injury, and the passing attack should hit on enough shots down the field to matter.

The Colts allow well over seven yards per pass – Deebo Samuel and his 17.7-yard-per-catch average should have a day.

What’s Going To Happen

The time off and the home field will matter.

San Francisco had to deal with Green Bay, Seattle, and Arizona all while banged up. There are plenty of holes and issues to deal with – and Jimmy Garoppolo has to be sharp – but the Colts will start to wear down in the second half.

The 49ers will play like the desperate team they are.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Chicago vs Tampa Bay Game Preview

Why Chicago Will Win

The defense continues to be good enough to win with.

The Bears found a back in Khalil Herbert who could grow into the role – at least until David Montgomery is back – and the offense has been able to crank out 140 yards or more on the ground over the last three games.

Yeah, Tampa Bay is No. 1 in the NFL against the run, but that’s partly because everyone spends so much time throwing against one of the league’s worst pass defenses.

Chicago will run and run some more, and then it’ll rely on the defense that kept Aaron Rodgers to under 170 passing yards and hasn’t allowed a 300-yard day since the opener against the Rams.

Week 7 CFN NFL Expert Picks

Why Tampa Bay Will Win

The Chicago offense goes on the field and it runs plays, but that’s it.

There’s no passing game. Justin Fields should eventually be terrific, but the O isn’t there to take any shots of consequence down the field.

How bad is the Chicago passing attack? It has yet to hit 200 yards. It’s last in the NFL in yards, touchdowns, and yards per attempt. Thats not a positive because …

What’s Going To Happen

Tom Brady is on fire.

He’s going to be hit a bit and won’t have one of his better games, but he won’t need to press anything.

Two early scoring drives will set a tough pace, the Bear running game won’t be able to establish anything consistent, and a great performance by the road D will be wasted.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Houston vs Arizona Game Preview

Why Houston Will Win

Is this somehow a trap?

Arizona is great, Houston isn’t, and it might be a letdown moment for the great side between Cleveland and Green Bay.

Houston’s offense doesn’t work, but the yards are there even if the points aren’t. The ground attack was great in the loss to Indianapolis, the defense hasn’t been bad against the pass, and again, there’s a chance Arizona isn’t locked in considering this should be a layup.

But …

Week 7 CFN NFL Expert Picks

Why Arizona Will Win

Houston doesn’t do that scoring thing the kids are all into.

There were 22 against New England when Davis Mills looked and played like an NFL quarterback, but the team failed to hit ten points in three of the last four games.

Nine points isn’t going to get it done against this Arizona team.

The Cardinals aren’t giving away the big mistakes Houston might need to make this a battle. They don’t need to take any big chances.

Run, keep running against a D that’s giving up well over 100 rushing yards per game without a problem, and get to the Thursday night game against Green Bay as quickly as possible.

What’s Going To Happen

Just when it seems like the Cardinals are about to struggle thanks to covid issues, or a letdown, or a decent road trip, they rise up and play better than expected.

It’s the NFL – those guys on the other side get paid, too – but the Cardinals will get up fast and cruise on in from there. It’ll be the running backs that take over and keep Kyler Murray from having to work too hard.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Detroit vs Los Angeles Rams Game Preview

Why Detroit Will Win

Will Jared Goff rise up after being quarterback-shamed by head coach Dan Campbell?

The Lion offense went nowhere against Cincinnati in a 34-11 loss. Goff was bad, the running game was worse, and the game didn’t give the world the normal close-call ending that most of their dramatic defeats have had.

This week, let it rip.

No one will expect anything other than a total annihilation, but the Lion passing game really is dangerous. It’s mostly in comeback mode, but Goff should produce against a Ram secondary that’s been rocked from time to time.

For what it’s worth, teams don’t throw all that offense on Detroit, but that’s because …

Week 7 CFN NFL Expert Picks

Why Los Angeles Rams Will Win

Running on the Lions is too easy.

Darrell Henderson was great against the Giants, the running game has averaged over 120 yards in the last three three games, and Matthew Stafford and the passing attack have bombed away for a league-high 8.6 yards per throw.

Detroit doesn’t have the D. It’s not helped by an O that can’t keep the chains moving on third down, but it’s also not doing its part to hold firm in the red zone or come up with other key stops.

What’s Going To Happen

Both quarterbacks will put up big numbers, but Stafford will be helped out by his running game. Goff won’t.

It’ll be an entertaining and close game for a half, and then it’ll all blow up in the third quarter. The Lions will takeaway Cooper Kupp, but that will open everything up for big days from Robert Woods and Tyler Higbee.

Philadelphia vs Las Vegas Game Preview

Why Philadelphia Will Win

It’s a banged up Raider team that managed to rise up against a bad Denver squad, but has a whole slew of issues besides its coaching fun.

The Raiders aren’t running the ball well – they’re last in the NFL in yards per attempt – they have the third-worst ground game, now it needs to work against a defense that’s been solid overall.

The Eagle offense might need a while to get things cranked up, but Jalen Hurts was able to rise back up in a shocking victory over Carolina – the D helped with a slew of takeaways – with big gash after big gash.

The Eagles are averaging over five yards per carry thanks to No. 1, and it’s going to continue against this D. However …

Week 7 CFN NFL Expert Picks

Why Las Vegas Will Win

The Las Vegas defense might have problems against the run, but the secondary has been solid. The win over Denver was the first time all year the D allowed over 300 yards through the air, and it’s not going to change after this week.

On the flip side, this is the week the Vegas offense will get the running game going. No one has attempted more carries on a defense than teams have against Philadelphia, and the results are there – the Eagles have allowed 100 yards or more on the ground in every game.

What’s Going To Happen

The Eagles have faced three strong offenses in the last four weeks – Dallas, Kansas City, Tampa Bay – and lost all three.

The Las Vegas passing attack will take over this week.

There might not be a whole lot of big shots down the field, but Derek Carr will connect on enough midrange throws to keep everything moving. Hurts will be Hurts, but the O will fail to hit 200 passing yards for a third game in a row.
