Wyoming vs UConn Game Preview

Why Wyoming Will Win

Wyoming appears to be tired of not doing that whole offense thing.

Under head coach Craig Bohl, for the most part, the offense was along for the ride while the defense took control of games.

It’s not that way anymore.

The Cowboys have exploded – at least for them – with a real, live passing game to go along with a dangerous ground attack to balance things out. All the O has to do is be okay, and that’s what it is this season.

The D is having problems on third downs, but it’s taking the ball away a whole lot, the offense capitalizes on the mistakes, and over the last two weeks, the big numbers are coming.

UConn doesn’t have the ability to keep up if it starts giving the ball away.

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why UConn Will Win

The offense at least put up some points late against Army. It didn’t matter to the game itself in the 52-21 loss, but it was a big deal to some.

The team keeps on pushing, even when it’s a lost cause.

The Huskies are trying salvage something positive out of a disastrous start. They have to find something they can rely on.

Wyoming’s defense has been uncharacteristically soft at times on the ground, the Cowboy offense isn’t that great at getting the passing game going, and the Huskies should keep pressing for a full 60 minutes.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Nothing is working for UConn.

The passing game is among the least efficient in the nation, the pass defense is the worst in college football in efficiency, and there’s nothing happening down the field.

The Cowboy defense will look the part this week, the offense will capitalize on three takeaways, and the momentum of both teams will keep on rolling.

Toledo vs Ball State Game Preview

Why Toledo Will Win

What the hell was that?

Ball State came back loaded with experience and talent from the 2020 MAC Championship team, and it sputtered in a win over Western Illinois go start. And then …

Pfffffffft. The air went totally out of the balloon with a blowout loss to Penn State – but that was expected. The 45-12 loss to Wyoming, though, was a disaster.

All of a sudden. there’s no running game, nothing is happening down the field with the passing attack, and the defense isn’t doing a thing against anyone who can throw.

However …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Ball State Will Win

What the hell was that?

Toledo did a great job of battling Notre Dame in a 32-29 loss – looking every bit the part of one of the MAC’s best teams, and then …

Pfffffffft. The air went totally out of the balloon with a disastrous 22-9 loss to  an awful Colorado State team. There wasn’t any running game, the 11 penalties were par for the course for a team that’s been hit with 34 flags in three games, and the O managed 295 total yards.

Ball State might not be playing all that great lately, but it’s not getting penalized with just 13 so far.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

The MAC season brings renewal.

Both of these teams are good enough to potentially win the MAC title, and both of them are coming back from their horrible Saturday losses.

Toledo is a bit more consistent offensively – at least through the air – and Ball State can’t seem to get anything consistently going.

Flags will keep Toledo from finding a groove, but they’ll get back faster to what it should be than Ball State will.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Memphis vs UTSA Game Preview

Why UTSA Will Win

It’s all starting to come together for a team that’s been building to this point over the last few years.

The running game hasn’t worked like it did to start the season against Illinois, but the passing attack has been good enough with veteran Frank Harris leading the way, the defense has been a rock – it’s 10th in the nation allowing 244 yards per game – and overall the team is great at controlling the tempo.

Memphis doesn’t care about time of possession – it’s among the worst in the nation at dealing with the clock, but that’s sort of by its design.

The Roadrunners should have the ball for close to 40 minutes, but …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Memphis Will Win

The Memphis offense strikes quickly.

The running game rolled in chunks against Nicholls and Arkansas State, and then it was shut down cold against Mississippi State. It didn’t matter.

The Tigers pulled off a win with a strange punt return for a score and a defense that held on in key moments late.

Overall the offense has been great, the offense isn’t turning it over, and even though the defense has struggled, it’s Memphis – it’s used to living with a mediocre D.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

UTSA is steady enough offensively and nasty enough on the defensive front to pull this off.

Can it handle momentum swings when Seth Henigan and the Memphis offense hit big shots to answer the long Roadrunner scoring drives? Yes.

UTSA will dominate on third downs – it’ll convert at least half of them – and there won’t be enough pressure from the Tiger defensive front to come up with key stops.

It’ll be tight late, but the experienced Roadrunners will close it out with one big drive.

San Jose State vs Western Michigan Game Preview

Why San Jose State Will Win

It’s a battle tested team over the last two weeks.

The Spartans put up a good fight for a bit in a 30-7 loss at USC, and then they traveled to Honolulu and survived a tough 17-13 battle against Hawaii.

Through it all, the passing game has been fine. It hasn’t been sensational, but it’s been good enough helped by a line that’s giving Nick Starkel plenty of time to work. The Western Michigan defense got hit for 415 passing yards against Pitt last week.

The Spartan defensive front isn’t quite getting into the backfield like it should, but no one’s running all that well on this group and the overall production has been fine.

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Western Michigan Will Win

The Broncos lost the game they were supposed to against Michigan, won the game they were expected to against Illinois State, and last week pulled off the win that showed just how good it can be with a big performance against Pitt.

The defense hasn’t been a rock, but the offense has been fantastic at controlling the clock and the tempo – that’s not San Jose State’s game.

Be stunned if the Broncos don’t have the ball for well over 35 minutes as plays a measured style that will force San Jose State to press a bit.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

It’s like a solid bowl matchup – like the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl – that you probably wouldn’t watch, but should.

Both of these teams could win their respective conference championships.

The big problem is travel. San Jose State got a week off after the USC game, but it went to LA, back home, to Hawaii, and back home, and then to Kalamazoo.

Western Michigan will keep the offense pressing, but the Spartan lines and a decent, efficient day from Starkel and the O will keep this close.

The Broncos’ ability to control the clock will take over in the fourth to close this out.

Coastal Carolina vs UMass Game Preview

Why UMass Will Win

The offense is starting to work.

It’s not 2019 LSU or anything, but for UMass, just getting a few touchdowns is a big step forward.

This is all about improving every week, and scoring 28 points in back-to-back games is a massive plus. It starts with the rise of freshman Brady Olson, who threw for 285 yards and two scores against Eastern Michigan after hitting Boston College for three touchdowns.

For all of the good things Coastal Carolina has done so far, it hasn’t faced a team that can throw the ball.

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Coastal Carolina Will Win

One of the most consistently balanced offenses in the county goes against a defense that gives up yards in a variety of ways.

The Chanticleers have hit 200 yards rushing and receiving in three straight games, and they’ll do it again. The UMass secondary is getting hit too easily with no pass rush to rely on.

The Minutemen D that’s last in college football at coming up with third down stops isn’t going to come up with many – if any plays to get off the field.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Coastal Carolina will get back on track after a scary 28-25 win over Buffalo.

Beating UMass doesn’t mean anything – it’s yet another tune-up before a light scrimmage against ULM.

The Minutemen will throw a little bit late, but it won’t be nearly enough to keep up.

BYU vs USF Game Preview

Why USF Will Win

Beating Florida A&M doesn’t mean everything is okay, now, but at least the offense started working a little bit.

USF might be a whole lot stronger than it seems – playing NC State and Florida is hardly a great indicator.

The Bulls have some decent playmakers, the offensive line has been okay in pass protection, and there haven’t been a whole lot of mistakes and turnovers.

As good as BYU has been in the 3-0 start, there hasn’t been a ton happening on the ground and there’s little to no downfield passing game. However …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why BYU Will Win

The Cougar defense has been terrific.

The leader in the Pac-12 South race – of course it’s not in the Pac-12, but it beat Arizona, Arizona State, and Utah – is living off of takeaways with seven so far, the offensive line has been excellent, and the team isn’t buckling when there are momentum shifts.

It faced the power of Utah and came through fine, and it dealt with the talent on an ASU team that really is good enough to actually win the Pac-12 South.

In this, grind and keep grinding. The USF defense was hit hard by Florida and NC State for over 650 yards in the first two games, and BYU’s line should take over.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Don’t be shocked if all of a sudden USF starts to look a whole lot better.

It didn’t destroy Florida A&M, but the two other games might not be a proper indicator of where the program is at in Year Two under Jeff Scott.

BYU won’t get crazy here. It’ll run, take the safe and easy throws that are there, and it won’t force anything that’s not there.

The conservative gameplan will work.

Indiana vs WKU Game Preview

Why Indiana Will Win

It might have been a loss to Cincinnati, but that started to look and play like the Indiana team we were all waiting for … to a point.

There were some misfires – the Hoosiers didn’t exactly give that game away, but … they gave that game away – but it was a battle. There’s no shame in losing to two of the top ten teams in the country – Iowa was the other loss to start the season.

Against WKU, it’s all about whether or not the D can hold up against the better passers. IU has been more than fine, holding down the Iowa offense and allowing just 210 yards to Desmond Ridder and Cincinnati.

For all of the positives with the changes at WKU, the defense can’t come up with a third down stop, there’s little pass rush, and technically, the team is last in the nation in time of possession. However …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why WKU Will Win

To be fair, only playing two games with Army one of them will skew a whole bunch of statistics.

The WKU offensive changes have worked – full stop.

Give head coach Tyson Helton credit for fixing the glitch. WKU went from struggling just to get to 20 points to having one of the most dynamic attacks in the country. Getting Bailey Zappe and the other parts from the Houston Baptist offense made all the difference.

Two games, 11 touchdown passes as a team, 913 yards of passing. The Hilltoppers are going to keep the pressure on the IU offense to produce, and …

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Hoosier QB Michael Penix Jr. has been awful.

He’s coming off a knee injury, and he had some good moments against Cincinnati, but he’s only hitting 48% of his passes with four touchdowns and six pick, and he’s not doing anything on the ground.

This is a very, very dangerous game for IU. It’s a sandwich between Cincinnati and a road date at Penn State, and WKU will take advantage by bombing away to keep this close.

The Hoosiers will pull it out with a few defensive stops in the second half – and helped by just enough pressure to survive.

Alabama vs Southern Miss Game Preview

Why Southern Miss Will Win

The Golden Eagles are playing a little defense.

The pass rush has been strong over the first three games along with plenty of plays in the backfield. No, USM hasn’t played anyone amazing, but it has yet to allow more than 60 rushing yards and hasn’t given up more than 304 yards of total offense.

There isn’t enough firepower to matter offensively, but the team knows how to play with a decent tempo and should at least be able to shorten the game a bit.

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Alabama Will Win

The Southern Miss offense won’t go anywhere.

It wasn’t bad against Grambling, but South Alabama didn’t allow much of anything, and Troy stuffed Frank Gore Jr. and company allowing just -1 net rushing yard.

The bigger problem for the Golden Eagles is interest. Nick Saban has been less than thrilled with the team’s 60-minute effort over the first three games – the letdown against Florida is looming large – and with Ole Miss and Texas A&M coming up, four quarter intensity is going to matter.

It shouldn’t take more than a few early scores to put this away.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Alabama is going to come out smoking, and Southern Miss is going to get in the way.

This is still a young team. Even for Alabama, replacing star players isn’t always easy. Of course the team is amazing, but there are just enough mistakes to make this a tone-setting game attitude-wise for what’s up next.

Any scores for Southern Miss would be a success.

It’s a rough week for marquee games, but it’s a week of bulk. There’s a whole lot to choose from even if there isn’t an Alabama vs. Florida on the board.

The other-team-has-guys-too call worked twice, going with the dog on Oregon against Ohio State a few weeks ago and Florida over Alabama last week. There isn’t anything like that in Week 4, but to throw the big game on here, just because …

10. Notre Dame vs Wisconsin

LINE Wisconsin -6
ATS PICK Wisconsin

Boo.

I wanted this at Wisconsin -5.5, but it jumped to 6 when I started this, so fine … don’t change your first answer.

We all know how this game is going to go.

Notre Dame shouldn’t be able to run a lick on the Badger defensive front, and the leaky Irish line might get QB Jack Coan killed. Even so, Coan will hit a few downfield plays, and Badger QB Graham Mertz will keep this interesting by missing a few key reads in the face of pressure from the Irish defensive front.

Wisconsin will hold the ball for 41 minutes – because that’s what it does – and it’ll seem like it’s dominating this game even though the score is close. In Chicago at Soldier Field, the rested Badgers should win this – have the Irish shown you anything so far? – but …

It’s this easy. Do you think Wisconsin will turn the ball over two or more times. If you do, then ignore this and take the Irish. If you don’t, then this should be a strong Badger win.

College Football 10 Team Parlay Picks

9. Missouri at Boston College

LINE Missouri -1.5
ATS PICK Missouri

I know I’m supposed to sell you on these being the 10 best college football picks and all of that, and that should mean that we don’t take any chances here. It’s the advice I give that drives people nuts – sometimes you stay away if you don’t quite know what you’re getting with a team.

That was Auburn last week with Penn State.

This week, we don’t quite know what we’re getting with Boston College, but I’m ignoring that because I’ll be mad if I don’t go with this and my instincts turn out to be right.

BC has been fine, but so far it played Colgate, UMass, and Temple, and now it’s without starting QB Phil Jurkovec. Missouri hasn’t been amazing, but if a miserable UMass offense can put up 28 on the Eagles, and if they can only beat Temple 28-3, I’m taking my chances that the SEC team with the terrific backfield can just get a win.

Week 4 Schedule, Predictions For Every Game

8. Nebraska at Michigan State

LINE Michigan State -5
ATS PICK Michigan State

Let’s keep this going.

I’m not a believer in superstition, but the 8 spot here has been a rock over the years. This season, it’s keeping the No. 8 chain going – it’s like the Turnover Chain, but cool.

I had Appalachian State covering against Miami, then last week it was Michigan State over the Canes, and this week I’ll go with MSU just in case this team is for real.

To be warned, though, my belief system that all performances over the Hurricanes this year have been overblown – see what I did there? – including Alabama’s victory in the opener, and certainly Michigan State beating Northwestern doesn’t appear to be any big whoop.

However, Nebraska might be playing just well enough to lose this respectfully. Even so, it’s only five, the Spartans have been air tight on defense so far, and it’s Nebraska, so 1) there will be penalties, 2) there will be turnovers, and 3) the defense will ball out only to give up third down conversions by the bucket.

Week 3 NFL Expert Picks

7. Louisville at Florida State

LINE Louisville -2
ATS PICK Louisville

There’s something very trappy about this.

Louisville just beat a strong UCF team in a thriller, and Florida State beat itself in losses to Notre Dame, Jacksonville State, and Wake Forest.

Louisville has a dynamic offense that seems to be hitting its stride at just the right time, and Florida State is playing like it just wants all the sad to be over already.

The Noles can’t seem to ever convert a third down try, they’re getting hit with a gajillion penalties, they can’t do anything right in the red zone, there hasn’t been a turnover the offense hasn’t enjoyed giving away, and for what seems like the 14th year in a row, there’s nothing happening on the O line.

This seems like a trap. If it is, so be it. Ha ha you win, betting gods.

Louisville is only giving away 2. Until Florida State shows you something, go with it.

Speaking with sticking with the momentum …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

6. Kansas at Duke

LINE Duke -16
ATS PICK Duke

No real analysis here … it’s Kansas.

Until proven otherwise, the cash machine that is the Jayhawk fade has put America so far ahead that one misfire – when it inevitably happens – will finally bring sweet relief to this wild ride that doesn’t slow down.

I am still steadfast in my belief that the over on the Kansas win total of 1 is the second-best call of the year behind the over on the Stanford win total of 4.

I still believe that Duke could absolutely screw this up with one of its fabulous mega-turnover performance art performances. The team invented new ways to lose in whatever that was against Charlotte.

Kansas is still a Power Five program with a great new head coach and enough playmakers to get hot for one wild day – the guys coming out of that tunnel are on scholarship, too – and I wouldn’t take Duke giving away 16 points to a potted plant, but …

It’s Kansas. The show goes on.
