East Carolina vs Charleston Southern Game Preview

Why Charleston Southern Will Win

The Bucs can move the ball.

Good on third downs, they’ve got a relatively efficient offense that worked just fine in the win over Citadel, and sputtered in the loss to Monmouth. Now they get to go against an East Carolina team that’s been hit-or-miss overall and can’t stop the passing game.

Charleston Southern will throw and throw some more to try keeping up, and …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why East Carolina Will Win

It won’t be enough.

This isn’t a Buc team that does much in the time of possession battle, and East Carolina will try using this game to control the clock – at least a little bit.

The offense hasn’t been consistent enough, but it can throw if the running game doesn’t work, and on the other side, the pass rush that hasn’t been there all year to start should get to have some fun.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

East Carolina has been close.

Don’t get caught up in the numbers – it has the nation’s worst defense so far – and look at how close it came to beating South Carolina after giving Appalachian State a push.

If it really is a team good enough to beat Marshall, it shouldn’t have any issues here.

Rice vs Texas Southern Game Preview

Why Texas Southern Will Win

Rice is having an impossible time stopping the run. If you can hand the ball off and block with any sort of competence, you’re going to gain  yards on this group.

The Owls have the nation’s second-worst run defense, and that goes along with an offense that put up just 24 points in the first three games. But …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Rice Will Win

Texas Southern isn’t Arkansas, Houston, or Texas.

Rice should’ve been more competitive in those three games, but now it gets a Texas Southern team that got ripped in its first two games – including 66-7 against Baylor – and also has problems on defense.

The Tigers have allowed a whopping 1,200 yards in their first few games and also can’t stop the run.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

This is where Rice gets to have a little fun.

It’s been playing around with its quarterback situation, but in this it’ll just hand off, gain yards, repeat. Texas Southern doesn’t have the O to keep up after getting down early.

Buffalo vs Old Dominion Game Preview

Why Buffalo Will Win

The Buffalo offense keeps things moving.

Old Dominion’s defense hasn’t been all that bad so far – considering it had to deal with Wake Forest and Liberty – but it hasn’t been able to get off the field. The third down stops aren’t there, and that’s where UB should be able to shine behind an O line that’s fantastic at keeping everyone clean.

Even with games against Nebraska and Coastal Carolina to deal with, the Bulls have yet to allow a sack and the ground game hasn’t been bad.

Old Dominion is struggling with its passing efficiency – the downfield plays aren’t there – but …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Old Dominion Will Win

Again, at least statistically, the ODU defense hasn’t been all that bad.
UB might not allow sacks, but the Monarchs should be able to bring a little bit of pressure and should hurry things along – the Bulls aren’t getting big things happening down the field.

For all of the good things Buffalo has done so far, it’s not taking the ball away. Old Dominion doesn’t have giveaway problems – it has to be +2 to get pull this off at home.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Old Dominion hasn’t played anyone its own size yet. The win over Hampton wasn’t a problem, but Buffalo will be a good test to see just how far the program has to go.

Buffalo will grind it out with the rushing attack and try to play around throwing against the ODU secondary that’s playing well. It won’t be a thing of beauty, but the MAC side will take it.

Louisiana vs Georgia Southern Game Preview

Why Louisiana Will Win

Georgia Southern hasn’t been Georgia Southern.

The quarterback situation was wried in the offseason, it was weird to start the season, and it’s having a hard time getting this thing going with the timing not there for the ground attack.

Oh sure, the running game worked against Gardner-Webb, but it’s been a grind without any consistency on the road in losses against Florida Atlantic and Arkansas. The chains aren’t moving, the secondary isn’t making up for the issues with stops – the Eagles are getting hit hard through the air – and it’s been a struggle to get points on the board.

On the other side, Louisiana finally got the attack working like it’s supposed to with 310 rushing yards in the blowout win over Ohio.

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Georgia Southern Will Win

Justin Tomlin is back.

He was supposed to be the starting quarterback, he was out the first two games, and he returns for the Arkansas loss. The offense might not have been great, but he ran well and got a game in before the Sun Belt start.

Yeah, Louisiana played better against Ohio, but that was the first time this year the ground attack worked. The consistency hasn’t been there offensively, the defense can’t get a third down stop – there isn’t any pressure behind the line – and the team hasn’t played like it’s supposed to.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Can Georgia Southern really get the season going after getting rocked on the road by a combined score of 83-16?

Louisiana might have just needed to get a little work in before it got back up to speed, and that has to be the hope for Georgia Southern with Tomlin, too.

Expect these two running games to look like they’re supposed to, but the Ragin’ Cajuns will be more effective defensively.

Navy vs Houston Game Preview

Why Navy Will Win

Eventually this running game is going to work.

That’s sort of the wrong way to put it. Navy ran for 337 yard in the opener against Marshall, but the offense only scored seven points. The O is able to control the clock, but it hasn’t mattered quite yet.

Houston hasn’t had to deal with a real running game yet – Rice is the only team it faced that thinks about the ground attack.

On the other side, the Cougars can’t keep defenses out of the backfield, there are too many sacks given up, and there’s little happening with the downfield passing game because there just isn’t enough time to work.

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Houston Will Win

Navy doesn’t score.

It’s a disaster in the red zone – Navy has scored on just two of seven trips inside the 20 – and there’s no passing game to worry about, even in a once-in-a-while-to-keep-a-D honest sort of way.

Even worse to stop Houston, there’s no pass rush. The Midshipmen aren’t generating anything in the backfield and they’re not coming up with enough big plays to overcome the offensive woes.

Houston has the defensive front that can get behind the line with regularity, and worst of all for Navy, the offense controls the clock. The Cougars hold the ball for well over 34 minutes per game.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Navy is having too many problems.

Eventually the ground attack will rise up and rip someone apart, but the defense isn’t doing enough to hold down Houston and the offensive line isn’t going to be able to handle the pressure. Navy will get its rushing yards, and it won’t be nearly enough.

Florida Atlantic vs Air Force Game Preview

Why Florida Atlantic Will Win

The offense has an efficient enough passing game to give Air Force problems.

The Falcons didn’t have to worry against Lafayette and Navy, and then Utah State came in and cranked up 448 yards in a 49-45 win.

Florida Atlantic might not have a high-powered passing game, but former Miami Hurricane N’Kosi Perry has been ultra-efficient with seven touchdown passes, no picks and enough key plays to keep things moving.

Great on third downs, the Owls can beat Air Force at its own game by controlling the ball and winning the time of possession battle.

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Air Force Will Win

The Falcon running game is doing what it does.

Yeah, Florida Atlantic should be able to throw enough to control the game for stretches, but the defensive front has to deal with the ground game that hit the 370-yard mark in two of the first three games.

Florida ran for 400 against the Owls in the opener.

Air Force can hit a few downfield plays here and there to take advantage of the cheating up D, it doesn’t turn the ball over, and it doesn’t have to worry too much about the pressure from an Owl front that doesn’t get behind the line.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Which team will do what it does well at a higher rate?

Florida Atlantic has just enough of defensive talent to hold serve, and Perry and the passing game are strong enough to keep keep the Falcon secondary on its heels.

Air Force will have a late shot to pull off the win, but it’ll stall just short in a fantastic game.

UAB vs Tulane Game Preview

Why UAB Will Win

Can UAB translate the performances against the mediocre into a big game against a good team?

The Georgia game doesn’t count – that’s a whole other level.

The Blazers destroyed Jacksonville State – to be fair, the Gamecocks beat Florida State – and North Texas, and now it gets a battle against a Tulane team that has a good offense but has to stop getting hit with so many penalties and has to prove it can deal with a downfield passing game.

UAB is bombing away, averaging over 19 yards per throw all while doing a great job of holding on to the ball and controlling the clock. The efficient passing game combined with Tulane’s mistakes – there are turnover issues, too – might be enough to pull this off.

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Tulane Will Win

Tulane is finally back at home. Meanwhile, in a weird twist, it has played more games in Birmingham than the University of Alabama-Birmingham.

Thanks to Hurricane Ida, the Green Wave played their first three games away from home, and two of them were against Oklahoma and Ole Miss. Meanwhile, UAB started out the season with its first game played an hour down the road in Montgomery, and then went on the road for its next two games.

Its first home game isn’t until October against Liberty.

On the field, UAB has a strange way of not being able to convert on third downs. That didn’t matter against Jacksonville State or North Texas, but being 1-of-11 against Georgia ended that in a hurry.

Tulane has the offensive balance to keep up, helped by UAB’s inability to do too much in the backfield. Throw in the Blazers’ problem with turnovers, and …

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Tulane gets the home win with the offensive parts working and the defense getting a breather after the Ole Miss problems.

UAB has enough talent to pull this off – and it’s probably going to win the Conference USA title – but the Green Wave will bring way too much pressure to let the downfield plays develop.

Troy vs ULM Game Preview

Why Troy Will Win

The defense has been stifling.

Troy could use a little more offense – the passing game has been okay, but the O doesn’t make it easy on itself – with the defense taking over with a slew of big plays, nothing happening through the air, and a pass rush that gets into the backfield in bunches.

ULM has a hard time moving the chains, there’s little downfield passing attack in the first two games, and the ground game managed just 111 yards so far.

This isn’t the game when the O gets healthy.

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why ULM Will Win

The Troy offense doesn’t get much on the ground.

It couldn’t get anything consistently going against Liberty, and Southern Miss held the attack to just 49 yards.

ULM has a whole slew of problems, but was able to keep the Jackson State ground game in check. It’s not hurting itself with big turnovers or mistakes. In this, just not screwing up will be everything.

Troy doesn’t have enough of an O overcome giveaways.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Can ULM get anything going offensively?

Troy won’t blow the doors off the Warhawks, but they’ll be steady enough to get out to an early lead and let the defense take care of the rest. It won’t be anything pretty, but the Trojans will happily take 3-1.

New Mexico vs UTEP Game Preview

Why New Mexico Will Win

Can the Lobo offense actually throw a little bit?

It couldn’t do anything against Texas A&M, but Terry Wilson bombed away against New Mexico State and now he gets a UTEP secondary that allowed 565 passing yards over the last two games.

UTEP has to control the clock to win this, but New Mexico has done a great job of controlling the clock by getting the defense off the field. The Lobos are stopping the ground game without much of a problem – it’s good at getting into the backfield – and they’re solid at taking the ball away.

UTEP is a giveaway disaster with nine turnovers in the first three games.

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why UTEP Will Win

The Miners have a little bit of an offense now. There’s balance, there’s a passing game, and this isn’t the team of the last several years that struggled just to get the chains moving.

It has a mega-problem with mistakes – it’s last in the nation in turnovers, penalties and penalty yards – and it doesn’t convert on third downs. But it’s been able overcome that by running the ball well against the mediocre teams and controlling the clock. However …

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

New Mexico will be +2 in turnover margin, it’ll get flagged three fewer times, and it’ll move the ball more efficiently in the second half as UTEPs mistakes start to pile up.

At home, UTEP will move the ball just enough to stay alive, and then it’ll take two steps back with a big error when it has a chance to make a move.

Arkansas State vs Tulsa Game Preview

Why Arkansas State Will Win

The Red Wolves ran in to a brick wall of a Washington defense that finally started playing up to its talent, but for the most part the offense has been great all year.

It cranked up close to 600 passing yards in the loss to Memphis, it pushed past 500 yards of total offense against Central Arkansas, and the parts are there to crank it back up against Tulsa.

The quarterback combination of James Blackman and Layne Hatcher is working, the downfield plays are there, and there aren’t a ton of mistakes to give away a ton of points.

However …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Tulsa Will Win

The Arkansas State defense that was a problem throughout last year continues to be an issue.

Washington’s offense didn’t do anything over the first two games, and then it came up with 600 yards against the Red Wolves a game after Memphis put up 680.

It’s only three games in, but ASU has the second-worst defense in America, and Tulsa should be able to take advantage.

This isn’t a high-powered Golden Hurricane O, but the passing game rolled against Ohio State last week with Davis Brin bombing away for 428 yards in the loss.

Arkansas State will give up yards any way Tulsa wants to take them, and …

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

The Golden Hurricane defense is just good enough to come up with a few stops needed to get through this alive.

Arkansas State will come up with enough offense to keep this interesting, but the defense will get hit hard by a balanced day from the Tulsa attack.

It’ll be an off-the-radar game that should be a whole lot of fun.
