College Football Rankings: 1 To 131 After Week 11

College football rankings from CollegeFootballNews.com from 1 to 131 after Week 11

College Football News 2022 college football rankings after Week 11 for all 131 teams with results and remaining schedules.

Last week was easy. This week really, really wasn’t.

At this point in the season it’s all about who’s playing well now while also putting together the entirety of the puzzle.

And then the Pac-12 imploded.

Week 1 doesn’t exactly mean as much as Week 11, but it’s acknowledged and it’s all in the mix.

There are some massive shifts this week with Arizona, Vanderbilt, and even Boston College shocking the world. UConn beating Liberty was a big part of the fun, too.

With just a few weeks to go, here are the CFN college football rankings from 1 to 131.

Bowl Projections College Football Playoff Predictions Week 11

What are the bowl projections and the College Football Playoff calls after Week 11 of the college football season?

Bowl projections and College Football Playoff predictions after Week 11 over the 2022 season.

Just how many SEC teams can get into the New Year’s Six and College Football Playoff. The answer isn’t all of them, but there are enough to mess up everything else.

The explanation for how the College Football Playoff is projected to shake out starts with several big things happening in the conference championships and then trickling down to everything else. That means the bowl projections have a few twists and turns this week.

With UConn being bowl eligible and Arizona now projected to get by Washington State and Arizona State to get in, there should be just enough teams for all of the available spots. Even if there’s a miss somewhere, there’s going to be an extra MAC team, or Arkansas, or someone to rise up and rock over the next two weeks.

Two key things to note. First, with all the SEC teams projected to be in the big games, there aren’t a whole lot of options for all the slots – assuming the Arkansas-Missouri loser will be 5-7.

This is supposed to be the SEC’s turn in the Las Vegas Bowl – it alternates with the Big Ten – but with an extra Big Ten team projected available and no SEC team thanks to so many in the New Year’s Six, we’re going with the idea of filling the bowl bid with the alternate.

The second curveball came from the independents. With BYU, Liberty, and UConn all needing to find a home, the call is that BYU will take the MAC’s spot in the Famous Idaho Bowl to face a Mountain West team – it’s a better geographic fit.

Next week this will hopefully be a little clearer, but for now …

43-27 Win For The Aztecs

San Diego State is bowl eligible

[mm-video type=playlist id=01fb7dafw2b08817yr player_id=none image=https://mwwire.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

San Diego State became bowl eligible with a 43-27 win over San Jose State at Snapdragon Stadium on Saturday night. It was a game that the Aztecs needed to remain in contention for the West Division.

The Aztecs produced a convincing win against one of the best teams in the Mountain West Conference. Here are some key takeaways from the win:

Held On To The Lead

In Week 9, San Diego State had a double-digit lead on Fresno State in the final minutes and blew that lead. Brady Hoke’s squad responded to that loss over the last two weeks with wins over UNLV and San Jose State.

In Week 11, it was actually San Diego State that had to generate a comeback. After trailing 14-0 in the first quarter, San Diego State rallied and scored 24 answered points before halftime. Even with a late surge from San Jose State, it was a comfortable enough lead to end with a win.

Jalen Mayden Looked Comfortable

After throwing an interception in the first quarter, Mayden finished the game with three touchdown passes and 268 passing yards. He connected with Jesse Matthews, Mekhi Shaw, and Tyrell Shavers on touchdowns. Shavers accounted for 111 receiving yards and 4 receptions. Mayden has performed at a high level since replacing Braxton Burmeister in October. He was a consistent presence under center that San Diego State was missing.

Jordan Byrd Can Be Explosive

Byrd gave his team momentum with a 95-yard punt return touchdown in the first quarter. That was the energy San Diego State needed to cut into San Jose State’s 14-point lead. Byrd can be a versatile option for San Diego State and he can be a factor on offense and special teams. Byrd could be more aggressive moving forward on kick returns.

Bowl Eligibility

The win secured bowl eligibility. San Diego State needed a win to avoid going 5-5 on the season and slipping behind San Jose State and Fresno State in the division. At times, this season appeared to be slipping away from San Diego State, but Saturday’s win was important for securing bowl eligibility.

Mountain West Football: Week 11 Winners And Losers

Who stepped up and who disappointed in Week 11 of Mountain West football action?

Mountain West Football: Week 11 Winners And Losers

We take a look at the Mountain West’s winners and losers from Week 11 of college football.

Contact/Follow @MattK_FS & @MWCwire

Encouragements and letdowns from the week that was.

Week 11 of Mountain West football didn’t let us down. The division leaders took care of business while rivalry games featured some unexpected twists, but despite the fun and games it wasn’t… well, fun and games for everyone. As you well know, for every winner there must be a loser.

Winners

1. Wyoming

The Border War hasn’t always been competitive in recent years — before yesterday, the series between the Cowboys and Colorado State had seen just two games decided by fewer than ten points going back to 2010 — but the men in brown and gold emerged victorious from a 14-13 fist fight on Saturday.

Backup quarterback Jayden Clemons didn’t shy away from the pressure after starter Andrew Peasley got knocked out in the first half, finishing the game 7-of-11 with 90 yards and a touchdown, but the Wyoming defense led the way despite playing stretches of the game without cornerback Cameron Stone, linebacker Easton Gibbs, and defensive tackle Jordan Bertagnole. They sacked Colorado State’s Clay Millen five times and erased a second-quarter red zone threat with a Deron Harrell interception, surviving a monster game by Tory Horton and a missed Michael Boyle field goal late in the fourth quarter to hang on to the Bronze Boot.

Better yet, the Cowboys also remained on a collision course with the Boise State Broncos for a big Mountain division clash in Laramie next Saturday.

2. San Diego State quarterback Jalen Mayden

The Aztecs posted one of the more shocking results of the weekend on Saturday night, confounding the San Jose State defense with one of the team’s best overall passing performances in recent memory in a 43-27 win.

Much of that credit is owed to Mayden, who overcame a shaky start to connect with three different SDSU receivers for touchdowns and finished the night 17-of-22 with 268 passing yards. He also added a team-high 61 rushing yards and accounted for seven first downs on the ground, making him just the 12th Mountain West quarterback to post those kinds of numbers in a single game.

3. Utah State safety Ike Larsen

After flashing some playmaking ability in non-conference play, Larsen has stepped into the starting lineup in recent weeks as the Aggies have battled the injury bug on defense and that move paid off big time in a wild 41-34 win over Hawaii.

Larsen collected six tackles, two tackles for loss, a sack and, most importantly, a pair of interceptions against Hawaii quarterback Brayden Schager. His pick-six in the fourth quarter would prove to be the difference maker for the Aggies, giving them just enough breathing room to withstand a late Warriors rally. Utah State might not have had the title defense they hoped for, but Larsen is looking more and more like a defensive cornerstone.

Losers

1. Nevada

No one expected Saturday night’s contest with Boise State to be very close, but the Wolf Pack hardly showed up at Mackay Stadium in a 41-3 blowout, a rock bottom which proved once and for all that fans will need patience in this rebuild.

The offensive line struggled to protect Shane Illingworth, who completed just 13-of-30 passes for 123 yards while absorbing four sacks. The defense couldn’t contain the resurgent Broncos rushing attack, tallying just two tackles for loss while allowing the quartet of George Holani, Ashton Jeanty, Tyler Crowe, and Taylen Green to score four times and average a staggering 8.2 yards per carry. Brandon Talton even had a field goal attempt blocked in his return to action after missing five games. Things should get better in Reno again, but it’ll take time.

2. New Mexico defensive coordinator Rocky Long

Long has done very good work with the Lobos defense over the last few years, but the Air Force Falcons have absolutely bedeviled his unit in that time and did so again on Saturday afternoon in a 35-3 romp.

New Mexico managed just three tackles for loss while Air Force ran the ball 70 times, averaging 6.1 yards per carry with four rushing touchdowns. They can be forgiven at least a little for getting zero help on offense, but it’s somewhat concerning that the Lobos’ strength has generally regressed against above-average offenses in conference play.

3. UNLV’s secondary

The Rebels let an upset bid slip away in a 37-30 loss on Friday night, but while settling for field goals too many times may get more attention, the defensive backfield had no answer once again for Fresno State quarterback Jake Haener and wide receiver Jalen Moreno-Cropper.

While Jerrae Williams recovered a fumble in the second quarter, UNLV had no pass breakups against the Bulldogs and enabled Haener and Moreno-Cropper to connect eight times for 164 yards and two touchdowns. That was a big reason why Fresno State didn’t even have to punt, the first time since 2008 that had happened to the Bulldogs, so while the rest of the schedule is much friendly for their damaged bowl eligibility hopes, the pressure is on Marcus Arroyo and his staff to keep that from getting away for good.

Week 11 of Mountain West play will wrap up late on Saturday when the Hawaii Warriors host Utah State. Neither team has had quite the season that they hoped for, but there’s still plenty on the line for both sides: Timmy Chang’s team has lost three conference games by seven or fewer points, but they could reverse those fortunes against an Aggies team looking to get a crucial road win which would bolster their bowl hopes.

Here’s how both teams could come out ahead.

Three Keys to a Utah State Victory

1. Get Cooper Legas in an early rhythm.

After a strong start to last week’s game against New Mexico, Legas ended up having his worst game of the year to date and completed under 50% of his throws. Against an anemic Hawaii pass rush that currently ranks 128th in the country with a 3.4% sack rate, however, offensive coordinator Anthony Tucker doesn’t have much reason to get gun shy this week.

It helps that Legas has tended to do most of his best work on early downs, as well. On first and second down, the junior quarterback has a 61.8% completion rate and has averaged 6.1 yards per attempt. The lone downside is that Legas has also thrown four of his five interceptions on early downs, as well, but the Warriors’ defense has allowed 76.3% of opponents’ first downs on first and second down, so the potential rewards may outweigh the risks.

2. Win the first quarter.

Putting trust in Legas could pay dividends in more ways than one. That’s because both teams have done their best work when firing on all cylinders in the first fifteen minutes: Utah State is 3-0 when leading after the first quarter while Hawaii is 2-3, but the Aggies are 1-5 when trailing while the Warriors are 0-4.

Ensuring the running back tandem of Calvin Tyler Jr. and Robert Briggs are involved early is another option. Both have averaged over five yards per carry early in games and Tyler Jr., in particular, has 257 first quarter rushing yards. That’s the second-most in the conference, which could be a boon against a Hawaii defense that’s improved since non-conference play but has still allowed 5.39 yards per carry against Mountain West opponents.

One catch? Tyler Jr.’s status for the game is up in the air after entering concussion protocol earlier this week.

3. Limit self-inflicted mistakes.

Utah State has often made things a lot harder for itself than it had to be throughout the season. Though they won by 17 points against New Mexico last week, the Aggies’ 11 penalties marked the fifth time in nine games that they racked up double-digit flags.

Despite Hawaii’s massive youth movement, they’ve done a surprisingly good job of avoid such mistakes themselves with an average of 5.4 penalties per game. If the Aggies find themselves being pushed toward an upset, there’s a very good chance it’s because they’ve continued to beat themselves.

Three Keys to a Hawaii Victory

1. Get touchdowns in the red zone.

Neither team in this matchup has done particularly well on offense inside the 20 this year since both sport red zone touchdown rates under 50%, but one clear difference between the two is that Warriors quarterback Brayden Schager has been considerably better than his Utah State counterpart, Cooper Legas.

Though he has just 23 pass attempts in the red zone, Schager has a 65.2% completion rate, four touchdowns and, most importantly, zero interceptions. If the game becomes a defensive scramble, how well the Dallas sophomore does in such situations could be a huge factor.

2. Keep the ground game on track.

Star running back Dedrick Parson got banged up in last week’s blowout against Fresno State, which explains why he was limited to just eight carries. However, that opened the door for Tylan Hines, a transfer from Air Force this past off-season, to continue a recent run of strong performances and he responded with 79 rushing yards on just 11 carries.

Hines has had double-digit carries in three of Hawaii’s last four games and given the Warriors a spark with an average of 7.6 yards per carry. In fact, only Colorado State’s Avery Morrow has more ten-yard runs in conference play to date. Against a Utah State run defense that’s allowed 31 such plays in Mountain West action, the second-most in the conference, and has allowed opponents to convert for a first down or touchdown on 89.5% of third- and fourth-down carries (130th in FBS), a healthy Parson and an explosive Hines might do serious damage.

3. Generate disruptive plays.

This key, as it has been for most of the year, is easier said than done. The Warriors have a defensive stuff rate of just 15%, which ranks 103rd in the country, though Hawaii did have a nice run of four straight games with either five or six tackles for loss before last week’s disappointment against Fresno State.

Utah State might be inclined to lean on Calvin Tyler Jr., if he’s available, and/or Robert Briggs since the Aggies offense hasn’t been anywhere near as explosive as it was in 2021. This could be a big opportunity, then, for youngsters like Ezra Evaimalo, who’s started the last two games after carving out a part-time role before that, Anthony Sagapolutele, and Tariq Jones to make waves and keep the game a low-scoring affair.

Prediction

Neither team has lit up the scoreboard in recent weeks, but Utah State should have enough of a talent advantage on offense against a rebuilding Hawaii defense to win the game in (probably) unremarkable fashion.
