Why Texas Will Win

Is it really just as simple as being at home or on the road? West Virginia is 4-0 in Morgantown and 0-2 on the road.

What’s been the problem away from home? The third down conversions weren’t quite there, and that came from not having a running game. The Mountaineers failed to hit 100 yards on the ground twice – and both times were in the losses.

Texas hasn’t been the slightest bit consistent, but it was somehow able to slip past Oklahoma State without any offensive production – the four takeaways helped – but that was an outlier. This offense is a whole lot better than it showed in Stillwater.

Why West Virginia Will Win

This has been a sneaky-good team with a good passing attack and a strong defense that has a good mix to beat anyone in the conference on the right day.

It all worked at home against Kansas State, with the defensive front stuffing the running game and allowing just 225 yards overall. But that’s what this D does. Only Oklahoma State was able to run well against it, and only Baylor was able to throw for more than 200 yards.

If the Texas that played last week doesn’t get the O going, and assuming West Virginia doesn’t turn it over four times, this should be close.

What’s Going To Happen

For all of the good things West Virginia has done so far, it hasn’t dealt with much in the way of firepower. Texas Tech really doesn’t have the pop you’d think it would, and Oklahoma State wasn’t quite right yet when the two played.

Texas won’t rip apart the Mountaineers, but the offense will be just effective enough to get out alive in yet another nail-biter for a team that played at the exact level of its competition.

The question keeps being asked each week – what’s going right?

The secondary hasn’t been awful, but that’s mostly because everyone runs at will. There’s decent pressure into the backfield – even if there’s no pass rush – and freshman QB Jalon Daniels is playing just well enough to look like a player to work around for the next few years.

What’s going wrong for Oklahoma? It’s possible to put up passing yards on the Sooner secondary that will give up the occasional big play. But …

Why Oklahoma Will Win

This Kansas thing is a mess.

The offense isn’t able to keep up at all, the defense is giving up yards in bunches however any offense wants to try getting them, and the line play has been awful.

The Oklahoma offense continues to improve as Spencer Rattler settles in. He’s still not consistent enough, and he’s still missing a few too many throws, but the passing game has clicked, the ground attack is coming off of its best performance of the season in the win over Texas Tech, and there’s nothing Kansas has defensively to stop what’s coming.

What’s Going To Happen

How much does Oklahoma want to win this by?

The world is way overdue for a Kansas out-of-the-blue performances that throws a scare into someone it shouldn’t, but the team hasn’t been remotely close to putting together a good enough half to do that much less a full game.

OU will take this out early, get up fast, and cruise in the second half as the bench empties out.

TCU has been strange.

It scores in spurts, it hasn’t been consistent, and it hasn’t come close to playing the same type of game twice in a row.

Why TCU Will Win

Texas Tech has been strange.

The normally high-powered passing attack hasn’t hit 300 yards in the last four games, and it’s not controlling games offensively like it should.

If you’re going to struggle on defense – Texas Tech is last in the Big 12 – you need to be able to score more than this team does.

The O is able to move the chains, but the up-tempo style is killing – as always – the time of possession battle. TCU is great at keeping games at its level and pace, and it can be methodical without worrying about the Red Raiders roaring back.

What’s Going To Happen

This game is going to be strange.

The road team has won the last five games, and TCU is 0-3 at home.

TCU will break its rough string with a good passing attack against a secondary that’s been torched over the last three games and in four of the six games. Texas Tech is overdue for a funky-good performance when the offense works, but that’s not this week.

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

The Cowboys might have lost to Texas in a painful way, but the defense was still good, and the passing game was great.

The Oklahoma State running game will always be the Oklahoma State running game – even if it doesn’t hit 200 yards like it didn’t against the Longhorns, it’s still effective – but having Spencer Sanders back has made a difference.

The sophomore has hit 70% of his passes, bombed away for 400 yards last week with four touchdowns, and now he gets a Kansas State defense that’s been hammered hard through the air by anyone but TCU.

Why Kansas State Will Win

Kansas State is coming off a total clunker of a 37-10 loss to West Virginia, but overall the team is still doing Kansas State-like things to be in the mix for a Big 12 Championship appearance.

The special teams are terrific, the team leads the league in turnover margin, and get inside the 20, and points are automatic. The offensive line is playing well enough to keep the dangerous Oklahoma State pass rush from dominating, and freshman QB Will Howard needs the time.

But it goes back to turnover margin. Oklahoma State will give the ball up a bit, and Kansas State will take it away – the Cats will be +2.

What’s Going To Happen

Kansas State will bounce back from the West Virginia loss with a whole lot better a performance at home. However, Oklahoma State’s defense will keep on producing, the offensive balance will be steady, and everything will get back on track after last week’s disappointment.

Why Baylor Will Win

The Bears aren’t making a whole lot of mistakes. There aren’t many penalties, and the team is solid in turnover margin. All of this matters for a team that’s having problems getting the O going – it needs to win the battle of the breaks.

Iowa State’s defense is good, but the secondary has been hit hard in Big 12 play by everyone but Kansas. This certainly isn’t last year’s Baylor team, but Charlie Brewer threw for 307 yards and three touchdowns in last year’s win over the Cyclones. He’s over for a great game, but …

Why Iowa State Will Win

Again, this isn’t last year’s Baylor team.

It’s having a hard time putting the biscuit in the basket – it’s not scoring enough in the red zone – there’s little to no running game, and the O as a whole isn’t sharp enough.

Iowa State certainly isn’t perfect, but the running game has been outstanding with over 200 yards in four of the last five games thanks to Breece Hall, who ran for 100 yards or more in every game with 11 touchdowns on the year.

Baylor’s run defense has been okay, but it just got ripped up by TCU. Hall will run for at least 150.

What’s Going To Happen

Iowa State is hardly unbeatable, but Baylor isn’t playing well enough to pull this off.

The Cyclone offensive balance is too good, and there shouldn’t be too many problems getting up early and letting the D take over. Brock Purdy is overdue for a big game, and this is when he starts to look and play sharper.

Why Boston College Will Win

Syracuse is already having problems, and it already lost S Andre Cisco, and now it loses another defensive back with Trill Williams opting out for the rest of the season. And here comes the Boston College passing game.

Phil Jurkovec has been a great get for for the program, he’s been a tough force for a passing game that took over the offensive style, and now it’s time to throw at will. Against a Syracuse team with a struggling offense, get up early, and coast from there.

The Orange don’t have the running game to take control of the narrative.

Why Syracuse Will Win

Can Syracuse start coming up with takeaways? That’s its one big shot to stay in the game to overcome the shaky offense.

The big plays from the defense have slowed with just one over the last two games, but it has 16 takeaways on the season, and it needs BC to be unfocused after the tough loss to Clemson.

There’s no threat of a BC running game, so even though the secondary is depleted, if it can be merely okay, the team should be able to stick around. The offensive side might have time to work – the bad O line isn’t going to be pressured too much by a BC line that doesn’t do much to get into the backfield.

What’s Going To Happen

Syracuse is in a bad, bad place – and no, not Syracuse itself.

Nothing is working, the team is banged up, and the production isn’t happening on either side of the ball. Boston College has a way of struggling when it’s not sharp – like in the close call win over Texas State.

Jurkovec will have a good, sharp game without a whole lot of drama. It won’t be a great performance by the Eagles, but won’t need one.

Why North Carolina Will Win

Don’t be blinded by the big performances from bad Syracuse and Charlotte teams – Duke’s offense isn’t that great. When it presses, it makes a ton of mistakes, and it’s going to have to press.

Can the Blue Devils stop good passing games? Not really. It held down Charlotte and Georgia Tech – neither one is Alabama bombing away – and allowed 248 yards or more to everyone else.

North Carolina’s offense hasn’t been consistent for a full four quarters game-in-and-game-out, but the passing game is the most efficient in the ACC, Sam Howell is bombing away for an attack that’s averaging close to 16 yards per completion, and the offense can run, too.

The Tar Heels are averaging 532 yards of total offense per game, but …

Why Duke Will Win

North Carolina is weird.

The offense can hang with anyone, but the team was too sleepy against Florida State, didn’t wake up until late, and lost. The team was too sleepy against Virginia, didn’t wake up until late, and lost.

North Carolina is far better than Florida State and Virginia, and it didn’t play like it.

The defense is getting torched through the air against relatively mediocre quarterbacks, and the run defense has allowed 210 yards or more in three of the last four games. Duke’s ground game has been great against the struggling defenses, and that’s North Carolina’s.

What’s Going To Happen

Can Deon Jackson run for over 100 yards? The Duke senior has hit the 100-yard mark twice, and the team won both games – their only two wins of the year. Duke has been running more to offset all the turnover problems, but it’s not going to be enough.

North Carolina will give up too many points to feel comfortable, but the offense will keep on pressing against the Blue Devil secondary that will be overwhelmed throughout.

Here comes the Liberty running game, and it’s going to keep on hammering. The Flames are ninth in the nation averaging 256 yards per game on the ground, ripping off a consistently great attack game after game, and the passing game can keep up, too.

Does Liberty have Virginia Tech’s talent? Not overall, but Malik Willis is an SEC-caliber quarterback who was fantastic against Syracuse and is coming off a 345-yard passing day against Southern Miss. He leads the team in rushing, Joshua Mack is a starting-caliber running back for most teams, and overall, the offense has been tremendously efficient and consistent.

Virginia Tech’s defense has been spotty, the run D has been hammered on a bit too often, and for all the good things the O does, it’s not converting on third downs. But …

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

Liberty hasn’t seen anything like the Hokie running game.

The Syracuse win was dominant, but the other five games were against teams that have done next to nothing right so far. Even with their awful offensive line, the Orange were able to run for over 200 yards against the Flames, and Southern Miss was able to rip off 211 yards last week.

Virginia Tech’s ground game has been devastating, coming up with over 300 yards three times and over 200 in every game. Run for over 260, and the Hokies are 4-0. Run for under 260, and they’re 0-2 …

What’s Going To Happen

But it’s going to be a struggle.

This is a good Liberty team that can do a whole lot of things right, they’re extremely well coached, and they have the attitude of an unbeaten team looking to make a massive statement. It’ll be plucky, and it’ll be up early, but Virginia will start to bust out with a few big runs in the second half to end the drama.

The offense is starting to play a little bit better, but the D has allowed well over 550 yards a game in each of the last three, getting destroyed on the ground by Notre Dame and through the air against North Carolina. But against Pitt, if you can’t stop the pass rush, forget it.

The Seminole offensive line has been better than past years, but it’s still a major problem and it’s still allowing too many plays behind the line. The Pitt defensive front continues to be a killer, leading the nation in tackles for loss and remains second in sacks. However …

Why Florida State Will Win

The Pitt offense has gone bye-bye without QB Kenny Pickett, who’s still iffy at best for this. The Panthers are on a four-game losing streak with no running game whatsoever – they haven’t hit 100 yards in any of the last four games – and the passing attack isn’t making up for it.

On the flip side, the FSU offense has been a whole lot stronger over the last four games. The all-around playmaking ability of QB Jordan Travis has been a big help, the running game is now averaging close to 200 yards per game, but …

What’s Going To Happen

No one’s running on Pitt. The Panthers have allowed more than 100 yards on the ground three times and haven’t given up more than 115 yards to anyone so far. Travis will pass well, but the Pitt pass rush will take over as the game goes on.

The struggling Pitt offense will do just enough to get by – Pickett is still a possibility to go – and the defense will take care of the rest.
