ACC Preseason Rankings: CFN College Football Preview 2021

The College Football News 2021 ACC preseason rankings along with a quick take on every team.

The College Football News 2021 ACC preseason rankings along with a quick take on every team.

This is NOT a ranking of where the teams are going to finish. This is based on how good we think the ACC teams are going into the 2021 season.

2021 CFN ACC Preseason Rankings: Atlantic

1. Clemson Tigers

Quick Take: If your concern is the inexperience of QB DJ Uiagalelei and a rotation of top-shelf running back talent to overcome the loss of Travis Etienne, you’re going to be okay. The defense is going to be a killer to make up for any and all concerns on the other side.
Clemson Preview | Schedule

2. NC State Wolfpack

Quick Take: This should be among the ACC’s most interesting X factors. The defensive back seven is as strong as any outside of Clemson’s, but the lines on both sides have to terrific. If they are, this is a dangerous team that should do a whole lot of damage.
NC State Preview | Schedule

3. Boston College Eagles

Quick Take: The BC offense was transformed last season and now it should dominate – at least through the air. The ground game is iffy – to be kind – but QB Phil Jurkovec and WR Zay Flowers will put on a show.
BC Preview | Schedule

4. Louisville Cardinals

Quick Take: The defense has talent and experience to be a whole lot better, and Malik Cunningham should be a difference-making veteran quarterback. It’ll be a bounce-back year, but it’ll still be a grind with a tough slate.
Louisville Preview | Schedule

[lawrence-related id=532385]

5. Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Quick Take: You know exactly what you’re getting. The Demon Deacons will never be outcoached, the offense will be fast and fun, and every game will be a shootout. To sound cliché, it’s the type of team that can beat anyone on the right day, but without the high-end talent to take anyone lightly.
Wake Forest Preview | Schedule

6. Florida State Seminoles

Quick Take: Where are the guys? Where are all the superstar FSU NFL prospects? The linebacking corps will be terrific and the ground game should start to work like it’s supposed to under Mike Norvell, but the O is all about the pop and explosion – that might take a bit.
FSU Preview | Schedule

7. Syracuse Orange

Quick Take: It’s just this simple – can the Orange O line block anyone? It hasn’t been able to do that for a few years, but the skill parts are good enough to make some noise if they get a little time to work.

2021 CFN All-ACC Team | 2021 ACC Top 30 Players

2021 Preseason CFN ACC Offensive Player of the Year

QB DJ Uiagalelei, Soph. Clemson

North Carolina QB Sam Howell could very easily be here, and the hope is for Clemson WR Justyn Ross and Miami QB D’Eriq King to be healthy enough to be in the mix for the ACC Offensive Player of the Year honor, but …

Uiagalelei is a special talent.

It’s putting too much pressure on the guy to step in right away and be what Trevor Lawrence has been for the Tigers over the last three years, but … he’s good enough to step in right away and be what Trevor Lawrence has been for the Tigers over the last three years.

The 6-4, 250-pound former super-recruit came through when Lawrence was out in the middle of the season, throwing for 342 yards against Boston College and 439 against Notre Dame – and now he should do that on a regular basis. He’s got the size, the arm, the mobility, and the team around him to be the big man on the ACC campus.

2021 Preseason CFN ACC Defensive Player of the Year

DT Bryan Bresee, Soph. Clemson

The next great Clemson defensive tackle was expected to be good right away after coming to campus as the 2020 No. 1 recruit in the nation, and he didn’t disappoint as one of the ACC’s best interior linemen.

The 6-5, 300-pounder was a bit banged up at times, but he was still steady throughout the year as a tough presence and quick enough to come up with 33 tackles with four sacks and 6.5 tackles for loss – and he’s just scratching the surface.

Too quick, too athletic, and with the NFL size – and the ability to get a bit bigger and stronger – he finished last year with a strong game against Ohio State and now should be an even more dominant force.

Wake Forest Demon Deacons College Football Preview 2021: Offense

Oh was this fun at times. The Wake Forest offense couldn’t move the chains and did absolutely nothing to control the clock, but when the O worked, it was fantastic.

It was second in the ACC in yards per completion, it dominated when it got into the red zone, and it was No. 1 in the conference in giveaways – even after falling apart in the bowl loss to Wisconsin.

A few good parts are gone, but all 11 starters from the Duke’s Mayo Bowl are expected to be back.

Sam Hartman turned into a star now that the quarterback job really was his. He needs to be more accurate, and he doesn’t add a whole lot to the rushing mix, but he knows how to run the attack. When he’s on – and he gets time to work – the Demon Deacons are unstoppable. Michael Kern and Mitch Griffis each got in a little work last year.

The receiving corps has a rising star in Jaquarri Roberson – a 6-1, 182-pounder who led the team with 62 catches and eight touchdowns – but he’s not alone.

6-2 second-year freshman Donavon Greene averaged over 20 yards per grab, shifty Taylor Morin scored there touchdowns, and 6-5, 212-pound sophomore AT Perry is a part of the mix. All of the main tight ends are back, too.

– All five starters return to an O line that had a very, very hard time in pass protection and struggled at keeping defenses out of the backfield. It’s not a bulky bunch, but it’s about versatility and getting a certain type of 6-3ish, 300ish pound blockers.

13-touchdown back Kenneth Walker took off for Michigan State, but Christian Beal-Smith is a nice junior who led the team with 732 yards and five scores and brings a bit of a burst.

He had three 100-yard games and can be a workhorse, but he needs help in the rotation with Walker gone. 5-10, 203-pound Justice Ellison was third on the team with 113 yards and a score.

Notre Dame (10-14) vs Wake Forest (6-15) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Notre Dame Will Win

The two teams played once this season with the Irish rolling 79-58 in South Bend. They hit 51% from the field, was on from three, and destroyed the Demon Deacons on the boards.

But that’s the norm for Wake Forest.

It can’t come up with rebounds, it’s awful a guarding the three, and it’s last int eh ACC in field goal percentage. On a run of seven straight losses, the team struggles to get to 30% shooting from the field and has only hit the 40% mark from three once since the loss to the Irish.

Notre Dame might be in the midst of a rough season, but it managed to beat ACC regular season champ Florida State by ten on Saturday, and …

Why Wake Forest Will Win

Yeah, FSU didn’t really care with the ACC title already wrapped up.

So what is Wake Forest doing right? It might struggle to hit threes, but it shoots a ton of them and makes a lot in a strength-in-numbers way. The Irish are awful at defending the three, allowing teams to hit 40% or more in four of the last eight games.

Notre Dame doesn’t make up for its mistakes with offensive rebounds and doesn’t do a thing to force mistakes – it’s one of the worst teams in the country at forcing turnovers.

What’s Going To Happen

Which team can hit their threes?

Wake Forest hasn’t been able to make enough shots from anywhere, and Notre Dame has been just good enough at times and the defense is just a wee bit better. It’s not going to anything aesthetically pleasing, but the Irish will be happy to keep their season rolling.

Wake Forest (6-12) vs Virginia Tech (14-5) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Wake Forest Will Win

Virginia Tech is struggling a bit lately. It was on a run of five wins in six games and nine wins in 11, but it lost two of the last three and needed overtime to get by a mediocre Miami.

What’s going wrong? The defense is having a rough time, allowing 50% or more from the field in three of the last six games, losing them all. There aren’t enough steals and there aren’t enough big defensive plays, but …

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

Wake Forest doesn’t shoot all that well.

It’s on a run of four straight losses – but pushed Florida State into overtime on the road – with just 39 points put up a few days ago against Clemson while struggling to come up with over 40% from the field on a regular basis.

The Demon Deacons aren’t bad from three, but they struggle defensively, turn it over too much, and they’re one of the worst teams in college basketball at simply making baskets.

In the first game against the Hokies, Wake Forest lost 64-60 shooting just 37% and not doing enough to come up with key stops. That’s been Wake Forest’s season – even when it’s close, it usually can’t come up with the big play in the key moments.

What’s Going To Happen

Virginia Tech has a whole slew of issues and inconsistencies, but it’s talented enough to be the team that roasted Virginia by 14 four games ago. It has to prove it can be that team after a rocky three games.

It’s not going to be fantastic against the Demon Deacons, but it’ll come up with a workmanlike victory.

Florida State (10-3) vs Wake Forest (6-8) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Wake Forest Will Win

The Demon Deacons are trying really, really hard to get this season going.

They haven’t played a whole lot of games, and they dug themselves too deep a hole with a horrible start to the ACC season, but they’ve won three of their last five by shooting okay and coming up with a whole lot of rebounds.

Florida State is struggling from three over the last few games and this remains one of the ACC’s worst rebounding teams. As long as Wake Forest can keep shooting reasonably well, and as long as it owns the rebounding margin by at least five, it should stay alive against the mistake-prone Noles.

However …

Why Florida State Will Win

Yeah, Florida State turned is over as much as anyone in the ACC, and yeah, it commits more fouls than anyone in the conference, but it also plays better D than anyone in the league to go along with a whole lot of points.

The Noles went dead cold from the outside in the loss at Georgia Tech, but they’re generally fine from three and Wake Forest doesn’t guard all that well from the outside.

The Demon Deacons aren’t bad from the field, but they don’t score enough to keep up.

What’s Going To Happen

Florida State will quickly get past the rough loss to the Yellow Jackets over a week ago and should come back roaring. Wake Forest won’t be able to hang with an offense that will keep on rolling for a full 40 minutes.

And now we’re back to normal … we hope. There’s a real ACC schedule with all of the big games we’re used to (yay!) and there’s no Notre Dame as an official member this time around (boo!).

Here are five things about the schedule that matter including who misses the big teams from the other division, the non-conference analysis, the one big difference in this year’s slate, the winners and losers, and starting out with …

5.  Who gets the rested teams?

Give (almost) every ACC team credit for at least having one nasty non-conference game on the schedule. Okay, that might be a bit much.

Give (almost) every ACC team credit for at least having one Power Five game of note on the slate to go along with the regular conference schedule. More on that in Part 3 of this, but that one key non-ACC battle gives every team at least a little bit of cover for one paycheck sure-win game against Cupcake A&M.

That game against an FCS team matters, and so does the midseason off-week. The time of those dates matter as much as the games/week off themselves.

Games vs. The Coastal: Duke, at Virginia

Missed Teams From The Coastal: Georgia Tech, Miami, North Carolina, Pitt, Virginia Tech

Wake Forest Demon Deacons Football Schedule Analysis: The team eases into the season with Old Dominion and Norfolk State to start things out before hosting Florida State. Four of the first five games are in Winston-Salem, but there’s payment due over the second half of the season with five of the last seven games on the road.

There’s no Miami or Virginia Tech from the Coastal, and the North Carolina game is technically a non-conference matchup. That’s part of a brutal finishing kick with three of the four November games on the road including the trip to Clemson.

Wake Forest Football Schedule Best Case Scenario: 9-3. The Demon Deacons start the season 3-0 after beating Florida State, and they take out Louisville and win at Syracuse for a huge first half of the campaign. The second half of the run is a struggle, but they survive Army, take care of the home games, and get by Boston College to close things out.

Wake Forest Football Schedule Worst Case Scenario: 4-8. Wake Forest loses to Florida State and Virginia to start the ACC season, and there aren’t any breaks on the road. The D can’t handle the Army option, the North Carolina game is an ugly loss, and a defeat to NC State leads to a winless November.
