Wake Forest vs NC State Game Preview

Why Wake Forest Will Win

The Demon Deacon offense won’t turn it over eight times this week.

The passing game threw for over 300 yards against Louisville, the defense was okay, and it all melted down with eight giveaways in the strange 48-21 loss.

The Cardinals were also helped by a great day from the running game, but that was a bit of an anomaly. NC State isn’t running well, it needs to get the passing attack going fast, and it wouldn’t be bad if the defense could take the ball away a bit.

NC State is 1-2 when it doesn’t hit 100 rushing yards, but …

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why NC State Will Win

Wake Forest will give up more than 100 yards on the ground, but NC State will have to win this defensively.

The Wolfpack offense has been okay with freshman MJ Morris rising up against Virginia Tech, but the passing game has to keep up with Sam Hartman and a Wake Forest attack that will try to erase last week in a hurry.

NC State’s defense leads the ACC in third down stops, it’s No. 1 in scoring defense, and the pass defense is doing a great ob of holding down the good passers on the slate.

As good as Wake Forest’s offense is, it probably won’t go off.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Wake Forest will want to make this a bit of a firefight, and NC State has to keep the score low and slow. The Wolfpack defense will be great, but Sam Hartman and the Demon Deacon offense will come up with a few key scores in the second half to survive.

There will be two Wake Forest turnovers. There won’t be eight.

Wake Forest vs Louisville Game Preview

Why Wake Forest Will Win

Can the Louisville defense handle the Wake Forest passing attack?

It’s been good at times, but the teams on the schedule that could throw had no problems, and those who could run cranked up at least five yards per carry.

Wake Forest can run enough to mix things up a little bit, but Sam Hartman and the passing game will take over with a good combination of deep shots and third down throws to keep everything moving.

The offense might not always bomb away, but it’s able to come up with enough key throws to keep everything moving against a Cardinal defense that’s fine against the mediocre, but allows accurate passers to go off.

Sam Hartman will go off, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why Louisville Will Win

He’ll be under pressure.

Hartman is used to taking shots and moving quickly, but he won’t get a ton of time to let the downfield throws develop thanks to a Cardinal pass rush that will keep coming.

As spotty as Louisville has been, it won three of its last four games with a good offensive balance and enough steadiness from the Malik Cunningham and the passing game to get by. It’s getting help by that aggressive defense that’s forcing mistakes with 15 takeaways in the last five games.

However …

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Wake Forest doesn’t turn it over.

For all of the throwing and all of the offense and all of the things the Demon Deacons do, they’ve only given it up five times with two turnovers against Boston College, two against Liberty, one against Vanderbilt – winning all three – and that’s it.

The Cardinal defense won’t get gouged, and it’ll be okay on third downs, but the offense won’t be able to keep up in the second half once Hartman gets going.

It’ll be a fun fight.

Boston College vs Wake Forest Game Preview

Why Boston College Will Win

Do what you do, Boston College.

There isn’t any running game to speak of, but that means the passing attack has to work. So far it’s been this simple for the Eagles – throw for 300 and win, throw for fewer than that and lose.

Wake Forest’s pass defense has only allowed over 300 yards once – the loss to Clemson – but it hasn’t faced anyone else who can throw other than Florida State.

The Seminoles got to 281 with three touchdowns in the Demon Deacon win, but Boston College on two weeks of rest should be able to push that unless …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Wake Forest Will Win

The Wake Forest pass rush should work.

Again, Boston College doesn’t have a rushing offense, and it’s not going to start this week. The Demon Deacons don’t have a problem against teams that can throw because they can 1) get to the quarterback and 2) throw better.

They haven’t needed to bomb away for over 300 yards to win, but they’ve been effective and efficient with Sam Hartman settling in, spreading the ball around well, and hitting on the deep shots.

It won’t take too many points to get this done – Boston College doesn’t have the firepower to keep up in any sort of a shootout.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Boston College will have its moments.

It’ll be a bit more of a back-and-forth fight than Wake Forest might like for three quarters, and then Hartman will get hot on the way to a quick burst to put this out of reach.

Being +3 in turnover margin will make it easier.

Army vs Wake Forest Game Preview

Why Army Will Win

The running game still works.

There might be a slew of problems on the other side of the ball, and it’s not as smooth or as efficient as it should be, but the Army offense is still the Army offense. It had problems on the ground in the loss to UTSA, but it bounced back with 826 rushing yards and eight touchdowns over the last two weeks.

As always, the Knights are great on third downs, they’re hitting on the deep shots when they choose to throw, and they’re second in the nation behind Air Force in rushing.

On the other side, the Wake Forest run defense is okay, but it hasn’t dealt with anything like this.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why Wake Forest Will Win

The Army running game still works, but this isn’t the Army team it’s supposed to be.

It’s having massive turnover problems – the style of play can’t handle a slew of mistakes – it’s not controlling the clock like it needs to, and it’s getting hammered by teams that can throw.

No, Wake Forest hasn’t seen a running game like Army’s, but Army hasn’t dealt with a high-powered passing attack like it’s about to see.

Coastal Carolina is brutally efficient through the air, and UTSA’s Frank Harris is a terrific passer, but Sam Hartman and the Wake Forest attack will stretch the field and keep it going.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Please, college football gods, can there be a repeat of the 2021 70-56 Wake Forest win – at least in the offensive fun show that it was?

Army ran for 416 yards and five scores, Wake Forest threw for 458 yards and five touchdowns and ran for four more, and it was one of the season’s wildest games.

Wake Forest has more of a defense this time around. It’s not going to be a rock against the Army running game, but it’ll force a few turnovers to go along with a typically great day from Hartman – he won’t be pressured enough.

Florida State vs Wake Forest Game Preview

Why Wake Forest Will Win

Sam Hartman almost pulled it off.

Clemson is Clemson – it had the defense and it had the guys to pull off the 51-45 win last week over the Demon Deacons – but Hartman balled out with his third straight 300-yard game since returning from the blood clot issue and hit the Tigers for six touchdown passes and a slew of deep plays.

Florida State hasn’t seen anything like Hartman and the Wake Forest passing game.

Jayden Daniels was able to hit the midrange passes in LSU’s loss to the Noles, and he almost pulled off the win with a late rally. Louisville’s Malik Cunningham threw for 243 yards, and even Boston College’s dying offense was able to connect on a slew of short range throws.

Florida State has to get ready to crank up the offense, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Florida State Will Win

Can the Wake Forest defense hold up?

The pass rush is good, and the run defense hasn’t been too bad, but DJ Uiagalelei came up with a terrific passing day for Clemson. Now it’s Jordan Travis’s turn.

He might not be the flashiest of quarterbacks in a huge year for the position, but the veteran has been accurate, he’s coming up with the explosive downfield plays, and his team is 4-0 after he bombed away for over 300 yards in the 44-14 win over Boston College.

As good as Travis is, the FSU passing game isn’t going to be able to keep up yard for yard with what Hartman brings, but it’s the rushing attack that should take over.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The Seminoles lead the ACC in rushing, they’re great at controlling the ball and the tempo, and they’ll have the O on the field for over 35 minutes.

And the weather? After so much worry and concern about Hurricane Ian pummeling Tallahassee, it shifted away. It’s going to be in the mid-80s with minimal wind and little chance of rain.

The conditions will be perfect for a shootout. Florida State will come up with more from the running game to take over late in the thriller.
