NC State (2-1) vs Virginia (1-1) Game Preview

Why NC State Will Win

The defensive front is getting into the backfield. It might not be doing enough to keep teams from scoring at will, but the pressure is coming from all sides with the tackles for loss coming in bunches.

Virginia’s offense isn’t moving the chains – it’s struggling on third downs – and it’s struggling at not giving up the ball with five turnovers so far. NC State hasn’t lost a fumble and didn’t turn the ball over in the win over Pitt. The Pack have to be on the right side of the turnover battle, and Devin Leary has to keep playing well.

He took over the quarterback duties against Virginia Tech, and he came up big against Pitt with 336 yards and four scores. He’s going to have to keep pressing, because …

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Virginia Will Win

Virginia is dominating the time of possession battle. It’s not like that mattered against Clemson, but the team is able to control games by keeping the ball for almost 34 minutes so far.

However, the Cavalier offense has to take shots down the field.

Even though the NC State pass rush has been solid, the defense is getting hit for close to nine yards per throw, giving up four touchdowns passes with no picks, and having problems with Pitt last week allowing 411 yards.

Virginia might not be perfect, but it leads the ACC in fewest penalties, the offensive line is giving the backfield time to work, and QB Brennan Armstrong has been good enough, even if he’s not Bryce Perkins.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

NC State isn’t going to play an uninteresting game.

Its offense has the pop to keep up the pace in shootouts, the defense can’t seem to stop anyone from scoring, and its three games so far have been a blast. This should be a good one, too.

Virginia is playing someone its own size. It was far better than Duke, far worse than Clemson, and at home, it’ll get into a back-and-forth fight with the defense coming up with two takeaways that NC State’s D won’t.

Clemson (2-0) vs Virginia (1-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Virginia Will Win

What can the Cavaliers do to slow down the Clemson machine?

In a weird season when it seems like everyone is struggling to get down the timing and the crispness of their offenses, Clemson hasn’t had so much as a blip. However, it helps to play Wake Forest and Citadel to start out.

There haven’t been any issues so far for the Tigers, and there weren’t a whole lot of problems for Virginia in the 38-20 win over Duke that was even more dominant than the final score.

The three Cavalier turnovers were costly, but the defense taking the ball aways seven times made up for that.

The pressure was coming from all sides from the Virginia defense, and that has to kick in from the start. Trevor Lawrence is taking target practice so far.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Clemson Will Win

Yeah, that Trevor Lawrence guy.

He was flawless in the ACC Championship win over Virginia last season – throwing for 302 yards and four scores as the Tigers put the game out of its misery in a hurry – and he started out this year connecting on 30-of-37 passes for 519 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions with three rushing scores.

Remember early last year when it seemed like something was wrong? Lawrence was trying to play a little too much hero ball and was forcing things a bit, giving up eight interceptions in the first seven games. Over his last ten games has has thrown 26 touchdown passes and no picks.

The Virginia secondary came up with five interceptions last week against Duke – former Clemson QB Chase Brice had a rough day. That’s not happening this week.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

Virginia isn’t going to get steamrolled.

Clemson will be in control from the start, but Virginia will be just plucky enough to make everyone try in the second half.

Virginia’s 1-2 rushing punch of transfers Khalil Herbert (Kansas) and Raheem Blackshear (Rutgers) will come up with a few nice scoring drives, but not enough of them in the second half.

Duke (0-2) vs Virginia (0-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Duke Will Win

Duke has been awful so far in its first two games, but at least it played two games.

Virginia is finally able to get its season going, but as we’ve seen so far – for the most part – teams aren’t exactly coming out of the gates roaring. It’s been rocky for too many teams in their first games, and there’s a chance Duke worked out a few kinks.

There’s no shame in losing on the road to Notre Dame, and the defense wasn’t totally miserable in the loss to Boston College. Overall, the D came into the season expected to be okay, and it’s been solid against the run. It’ll hold its own against the Cavalier ground game, but …

Why Virginia Will Win

Duke’s pass defense has been ripped to shreds.

Star CB Mark Gilbert might be back after injury problems, but the secondary isn’t coming up with stops on a regular basis. Notre Dame’s Ian Book and Boston College’s Phil Jurkovec – a Notre Dame transfer – combined for 563 yards and three scores taking target practice to keep the chains moving.

Virginia QB Brennan Armstrong has been in the system long enough to know what he’s doing. Give him a little time, and he’ll be effective.

What’s Going To Happen

Duke hasn’t done a thing so far to keep its offense on the field.

Virginia should have the ball for at least 35 minutes as it doesn’t take a whole lot of chances, relies on a good defense, and gets a good day out of Armstrong without enough mistakes for the Blue Devils to capitalize on.

5. ACC 2020 Preview

The ACC puffed its chest out after the 2016 season, and rightly so.

Clemson had won the national title, Florida State and Louisville were rolling,  Miami was back, Virginia Tech was great, Georgia Tech won nine games, and 11 of the 14 programs won seven games or more. But just as the ACC was starting to feel it, it all started to slip.

Clemson was still Clemson, and the conference was still okay, but it wasn’t dominant league many thought it could be. There wasn’t that push past the Big Ten to challenge the SEC for college football supremacy.

This year might just change all of that.

[jwplayer zttcjcuk]

No, the ACC won’t be as deep or as talented as the SEC, and no, it doesn’t have as many high-end powers as the Big Ten, but it also doesn’t have a Rutgers.

And it has a Notre Dame.

CFN Preview 2020: All 130 Team Previews

Clemson is obvious star, but the league needs a No. 2. The SEC has several of those teams in the mix for whatever the No. 1 is in a given year, and Penn State, Wisconsin, and to a certain extent, Michigan, are there to be Ohio State’s Robin.

With Florida State down over the last few years – and with Miami, Virginia Tech and others being okay, but not killers – the league has been missing the overall oomph.

That just changed.

With Notre Dame a part of the ACC Championship mix this year, there’s the No. 2 team. There’s the real challenger to at least push Clemson, and best of all, there are more able to really and truly make things interesting.

Duke, Syracuse, Georgia Tech and Boston College are all just okay – to be nice – but it wouldn’t be in any way stunning if any of them were able to beat a Pitt, or Virginia, or North Carolina, etc. All 15 teams are at the very least interesting, if not solid.

It’s going to be a weekly battle with crazy twist after crazy twist on the way to coming up with the top two teams out of the 15 to play for the title, and best of all, it’s all going to be played at the high level we hopes was coming a few years ago.
