Why UConn Will Win

Xavier is getting KILLED on the defensive glass.

Seton Hall and UConn were able to get way too many second chances, St. John’s was able to move the ball around for a whole lot of easy shots, and DePaul was able to win the rebounding battle in its tight win.

UConn has been fine defensively lately – the Xavier game was a bit of an outlier – and it just needs to not screw this up. There can’t be the 23 fouls like there were in the first meeting and it’s got to do its part to get to the free throw line, too.

What’s Going To Happen

Offensive rebounds. UConn will get them, and Xavier won’t. Considering the Musketeers aren’t going to do anything big from three, that’s going to matter.

The Huskies will overcome a whole lot of misfires from outside to win the battle in the interior and get revenge for that earlier loss.

Why Seton Hall Will Win

There’s no shame in losing on the road to Villanova.

Seton Hall was playing well before the loss a few days ago, but even in defeat the threes were falling.

Hitting from the outside has been good, but to beat UConn the rebounding has to be there. The Pirates have been great on the offensive boards for the last few weeks, and it’s got the toughness on the defensive end to hold its own against the Huskies on the glass.

However, even though Seton Hall got rolled in the first meeting in rebounding margin, it still managed to win because it got to the free throw line over and over and over again.

Why UConn Will Win

UConn is at home.

There’s a problem when this team travels, but it’s 10-2 at home with both losses in low scoring fights when the offense wasn’t working.

Seton Hall might not be run ‘n’ stun with its offense, but the defense isn’t strong enough overall to keep this from being played in the 50s.

There aren’t enough assists and it usually takes a whole lot of ball movement to get around the UConn defense that’s strong on the inside.

And again, Seton Hall won the first time around when it wasn’t great on the boards, but it’s not going to get away with that again.

What’s Going To Happen

The 90-87 overtime win at Seton Hall was a blast back in early January. This won’t be that, but it should be an entertaining back-and-forth fight.

UConn almost always wins when it hits at least 42% from the field, with the loss to Seton Hall one of the only two defeats in 16 games when it gets there.

It’ll get there from the field, and it’ll overcome a big day from the Pirates on the line to get by.

Why Marquette Will Win

When the threes fall, the opponents fall.

(Dreadfully sorry. I’ll try to do better next time.)

Marquette couldn’t hit from the outside against Providence and lost. It hit from the outside against just about everyone else in 2022, and won.

After the rough midseason stretch, the Golden Eagles started to get really, really good from the outside making nine or more in eight of their last nine games. The one outlier was that Providence game.

This is a different team than the one that got dropped by UConn 78-70 back in late December. That’s when the shooting wasn’t there.

There’s more of a commitment to getting the extra pass, and there’s something about taking more outside shots that seems to be helping.

By the way, UConn is generally bad at guarding the three. Villanova just hit 55% from the outside in its win, but …

Why UConn Will Win

Only three teams have made more than seven threes on UConn this year, and they all lost – that includes Auburn.

No, overall UConn isn’t all that great at stopping teams from making threes, but offenses just don’t take enough of them considering how tough it is to score inside.

There’s a bit too much inconsistency overall, but it’s great at home, it’s got the ability to keep up in a shootout, and it’s fantastic on the glass and generating second chance points.

What’s Going To Happen

Expect much, much different Marquette team.

UConn will try to force things to go inside, but the Golden Eagles will come out firing from the start on the road.

Getting away from Milwaukee hasn’t been that much of an issue in 2022 – their game translates. The three will fall just enough to keep UConn’s mini-late season slide going.

It’s been a rough run over the last few weeks – losing four of its last six – but Creighton can still shoot.

It’s been way too rocky from the outside – more on that in a moment – but the team still leads the Big East in field goal percentage, the defense continues to be strong, and there’s enough of an inside presence to matter.

Turnovers are the issue, but UConn doesn’t force a ton of mistakes and doesn’t generate enough pressure. The Bluejays can rebound and they should be able to defend the Huskies from three, but …

Yeah, the threes. This isn’t your normal Creighton team.

It’s not taking a whole lot of shots from the outside, and it’s not making them when it does. It hasn’t been able to hit 30% from three in any of the last three games and is making just 31% overall – it’s way too inconsistent.

That’s where UConn comes in. It’s been great at defending the three, it’s too good on the boards, and it’s been hitting from the field, too.

It’s a bad mix for Creighton. It has to own the inside, but UConn is too good on the board and blocking shots – the presence is there to hold up – and again, the threes aren’t going to be there to make up for it.

The Huskies are dominating in the interior.

The combination of Adama Sang and Isaiah Whaley are fantastic at coming up with blocks – UConn is second in the nation in blocked shots – the team is a bear on the boards, and they’re great overall at forcing offenses to struggle.

The D has allowed more than 70 points just four times all season, and now it gets a DePaul offense that doesn’t score.

The Blue Demons have lost eight of their last nine games and didn’t hit 48 points in either of their last two games. They don’t have the offense to move the ball around well enough to get easy shots, but …

Why DePaul Will Win

The Blue Demons will hit the boards.

They might not do a whole lot from the outside, the don’t generate enough easy points in transition, but they get a whole lot of rebounds and can hold their own on the offensive glass.

To make this a fight, they have to get to the free throw line over and over and over again like they did in the 96-92 win over Seton Hall, and UConn is more than good for at least 15 fouls to help the cause.

What’s Going To Happen

Can DePaul do anything from the outside?

The three point shooting has gone bye-bye, and there’s no consistency whatsoever to the offense as a whole, but it’s been a bit better at home lately.

UConn will send the Blue Demons to the line a bit too often, but the offense will be too good inside for the upset to be a possibility after a tight first half.
