Northern Illinois vs Toledo Game Preview

Why Northern Illinois Will Win

That’s the Northern Illinois running game we’ve all been waiting for.

It’s what the program has been built on, and it’s been great over the last few weeks with 292 yards against Maine and a 242-yard performance against Eastern Michigan – winning both games.

The offense is finishing off its deep drives with points, it’s controlling the clock, and the offensive front is fantastic in pass protection.

Speaking of running games …

Week 6 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Toledo Will Win

Now it’s all starting to work.

Toledo needs to run well to win, and it didn’t do that against Notre Dame and Colorado State. The offensive line has to take over the game right away, and the running game has to get to 200 yards.

3-0 when it does that, it has to barrel through a Northern Illinois defense that allowed over 200 yards twice and 191 to Wyoming.

On the other side, Toledo’s defense is the best in the MAC at getting into the backfield, which is partly why it leads the league allowing fewer than 300 yards per game.

Week 6 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Toledo will run better.

The Northern Illinois run defense will come up with a few good stops early on, but it’ll wear down as the game goes on. Toledo has only allowed more than 150 rushing yards once this year. Northern Illinois will give up two bills on the ground.

Toledo vs UMass Game Preview

Why Toledo Will Win

Can this team ever put it all together?

It had Notre Dame in big trouble, and then it bonked against Colorado State. The team got the win over Ball State, but the offense still didn’t work like it was supposed to.

The running game was stuffed cold by Colorado State, but it bounced back strong with 272 yards against the Cardinals, and now it should keep it all going against a UMass defense that’s getting plowed on for 242 rushing yards per game.

UMass has the worst defense in the nation on third downs, but …

Week 5 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why UMass Will Win

Toledo can’t move the chains with any sort of consistency.

The offensive front has been a major problem – UMass HAS to get the pass rush going – and the team kills itself over and over again with way too many penalties.

The Minuteman offense has shown sparks – it worked in the loss to Eastern Michigan and the passing game kicked in late against Boston College. At home, the O should be decent, but …

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Toledo will take the W, but it still won’t look like it’s in a place to kick it all in and take over the MAC when it dives back into conference play next week.

It won’t be a big-time offensive show when it comes to big plays, but there will be just enough points to make this interesting. Toledo will generate the scoring drives early on to be in control throughout.

Toledo vs Ball State Game Preview

Why Toledo Will Win

What the hell was that?

Ball State came back loaded with experience and talent from the 2020 MAC Championship team, and it sputtered in a win over Western Illinois go start. And then …

Pfffffffft. The air went totally out of the balloon with a blowout loss to Penn State – but that was expected. The 45-12 loss to Wyoming, though, was a disaster.

All of a sudden. there’s no running game, nothing is happening down the field with the passing attack, and the defense isn’t doing a thing against anyone who can throw.

However …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Ball State Will Win

What the hell was that?

Toledo did a great job of battling Notre Dame in a 32-29 loss – looking every bit the part of one of the MAC’s best teams, and then …

Pfffffffft. The air went totally out of the balloon with a disastrous 22-9 loss to  an awful Colorado State team. There wasn’t any running game, the 11 penalties were par for the course for a team that’s been hit with 34 flags in three games, and the O managed 295 total yards.

Ball State might not be playing all that great lately, but it’s not getting penalized with just 13 so far.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

The MAC season brings renewal.

Both of these teams are good enough to potentially win the MAC title, and both of them are coming back from their horrible Saturday losses.

Toledo is a bit more consistent offensively – at least through the air – and Ball State can’t seem to get anything consistently going.

Flags will keep Toledo from finding a groove, but they’ll get back faster to what it should be than Ball State will.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Colorado State (0-2) vs Toledo (1-1) Game Preview

Why Colorado State Will Win

So what’s going right here?

It’s been a disastrous start for the Rams with home losses to South Dakota State and Vanderbilt to kick things off. There’s too much talent in place to struggle this much.

There’s supposed to be more of a pass rush that hasn’t shown up quite yet, and there’s far too much potential on offense to not bring more pop.

Former Boston College RB David Bailey was able to run well against Vanderbilt, but he needs the ball more. Trey McBride is one of the most dangerous receiving tight ends in college football, and again, there’s enough in place to start throwing.

The D wasn’t bad against the Vandy running game, but …

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Will Toledo Win

Colorado State keeps stalling.

Penalties have been an absolute killer so far – 11 against Vanderbilt – and generating long drives was a struggle. Colorado State never seemed to have the ball, badly losing the time of possession battle.

Toledo had the ball for over 34 minutes against Notre Dame.

The Rockets have the guys to push for the MAC title, and they showed the upside in the near-miss 32-29 loss to the Irish. Carter Bradley and the passing game should work, and Bryant Koback is a dangerous back who’ll keep things moving.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Toledo will keep the misery going for the Rams.

This is a well-coached, experienced, tight team that should get over the 11 penalties it got hit for against Notre Dame while generating a balanced attack that owns the clock.

Colorado State will get off to a good start, but Toledo will be steadier for four quarters.

Notre Dame (1-0) vs Toledo (1-0) Game Preview

Why Toledo Will Win

How gassed is Notre Dame?

Toledo had about a day-and-a-half more time to rest up and relax after its 49-10 win over Norfolk State, and Notre Dame had to get through an emotional 41-38 overtime fight with Florida State.

The Fighting Irish might have looked great at times offensively, but they got ripped up by the FSU running game for 264 yards and three scores as the game got nasty over the second half.

Toledo has the talent and the experience to make this more than just a spirited battle.

There’s a deep group of skill parts and a solid defensive front that should be able to hold up against a still-emerging Irish line. The Rockets have balance, explosion, and …

Week 2 College Football Expert Picks

Why Notre Dame Will Win

You think Notre Dame will be a wee bit active defensively after the problems in Tallahassee?

New defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman took a social media hit for a D that somehow looked like it was playing a prevent run defense. This is a good group with the parts to be a whole lot better, and in this it just has to be okay while Jack Coan and the offense take care of the rest.

It’s not that the Irish took their foot off the gas, but they stalled late, the ground game didn’t go anywhere, and Coan ended up throwing for 366 yards and four scores.

Notre Dame will run a whole lot better this week.

Week 1 NFL Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Irish RB Kyren Williams wasn’t able to get loose. FSU made Coan try to win the game, and he did.

Toledo will come up with a few first half scores to make this a fight into the second half, but expect the Notre Dame defense to play with its hair on fire after the way the Monday night game ended.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Toledo (0-0) vs Norfolk State (0-0) Game Preview

Why Norfolk State Will Win

The Spartans didn’t get a chance to play in 2020 or the FCS spring session – they’re going to be jacked to get back on the field.

They still have their star quarterback around. Juwan Carter threw 23 touchdown passes and ran for six more back in 2019, and he has his top two targets in Da’Kendall James and Justin Smith back.

It’s an aggressive team that will bring the pass rush, be balanced enough offensively to make the Toledo defense work, and again, it’s going to be very, very fired up.

Week 1 College Football Schedule

Why Toledo Will Win

The Rockets are loaded offensively.

Head coach Jason Candle has had plenty of success, but this might be his best team yet with everyone back from the attack that averaged close to 500 yards and 35 points per game.

Norfolk State should be good at taking the ball away, but the secondary is about to have a rough dat against a Rocket receiving corps that should be the strongest in the MAC.

What’s Going To Happen

Norfolk State won’t be a total pushover, but it’s about to deal with a Toledo offense that’s going to ramp up the production in a big way this season.

The Rockets will get off to a hot start and cruise from there, but the Spartans will score just enough to make everyone keep working.

This piece is almost certainly going to be wrong.

Two years ago we didn’t get Memphis – who ended up getting the New Year’s Six Bowl nod – and last season we weren’t even in the right zip code when it came to the rise of Coastal Carolina and Louisiana.

But we did have Cincinnati on the 2020 list.

So far in the College Football Playoff era, six teams from the Group of Five conferences – the American Athletic Conference, Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West, Sun Belt – have been the highest-ranked conference champion in the final CFP rankings to get the New Year’s Six spot. None of them have been able to get into the playoff, but if the tournament expands, that will change.

Boise State beat Arizona in the first shot for the Group of Five, and Houston followed it up with a win over Florida State. Western Michigan, Memphis, Cincinnati, and UCF (twice) are the other schools to get the big spotlight game, going 3-4 overall and generally playing very, very well in the losses.

This year, the Group of Five champion – if it’s not in the College Football Playoff – will either play in the Playstation Fiesta Bowl or the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.

CFN 2021 Preview: All 130 Team Previews

So what does it take for a Group of Five program to get that New Year’s Six slot? Realistically – but not technically – 1) needs to go unbeaten or finish with just one loss, 2) it should have at least one signature win to impress the College Football Playoff committee that does the rankings, and 3), as part of the requirement, it has to win its conference championship.

Here’s hoping that a few teams will rise up and shock the world, but assume that one of these teams will likely have the best shot at getting the New Year’s Six nod.

Let’s start with a total cop-out.

College Football Group of Five Programs in the New Year’s Six Hunt

5. San Jose State at Nevada winner

CFN 2021 San Jose State Preview

Boise State is always the instant pick from the Mountain West to have a shot at the New Year’s Six bowl bid, but this year’s team is undergoing a coaching overhaul and it has a few tweaks it has to make, but there are three problems …

Non-conference schedule, non-conference schedule, non-conference schedule.

The Broncos should be strong enough in a relatively weak Mountain Division to get to the Mountain West title game, but they have to start the season at UCF, host Oklahoma State, and they have to go to BYU.

If they win all three they should probably be No. 1 on this list, if they win two of the three they’ll be in the hunt, and if they win just one, forget it. Throw in the road games at San Diego State, Colorado State and Fresno State, and it’s a tough ask.

CFN 2021 Nevada Preview

From the West, Fresno State will be dangerous, San Diego State always has a puncher’s chance to get to the NY6, and Hawaii will be plucky, but it should – like last year – come down to the showdown between San Jose State and Nevada.

The Spartans have to go to USC, but they other three non-conference games are against Western Michigan, New Mexico State and Southern Utah. If they’re good enough to win the Mountain West title, they’ll be good enough to win all three of those.

They don’t have to play Boise State and get San Diego State and Fresno State at home. However, they start November with a trip to Reno.

The Wolf Pack are loaded with high-octane offensive talent, the overall experience is in place, and the coaching staff is hitting its stride. They have to at least split the road games against Cal and Kansas State, and they follow that up with a trip to Boise State. Throw in road games at San Diego State and Fresno State, and there’s a problem.

However, get by San Jose State, go on to win the Mountain West title, and they should be in the hunt.

2021 CFN MAC Preseason Rankings: East

1. Buffalo Bulls

Quick Take: It’s a new era of UB football under Maurice Linguist, and there’s still enough in place to at least be in the mix for the MAC Championship. The running game will still be good, the defensive back seven is among the best in the league, and overall the machine shouldn’t stop.
Buffalo Preview | Schedule

2. Kent State Golden Flashes

Quick Take: The FlashFast offense is about to be deadlier than ever. The Golden Flashes have the best quarterback in the league in Dustin Crum, the coaching staff is in a groove now, and the defense should be just a wee bit better.
Kent St Preview | Schedule

3. Miami University RedHawks

Quick Take: Defense, offensive consistency, repeat. There might not be a big-time running game, but the passing attack will be fine, the linebacking corps will be great, and the RedHawks will make a big push for the East.
MU Preview | Schedule

[lawrence-related id=532453]

4. Ohio Bobcats

Quick Take: Feel more than free to put Ohio at the top of the East list – or at least shuffle it among the four best teams – with a great offensive backfield, what should be a dominant running game, and with a D that should be just good enough to hold serve.
Ohio Preview | Schedule

5. Akron Zips

Quick Take: It’s still a work in progress. Akron needs the lines to be a whole lot better, the offense has to be far more consistent, and there have to be a few things the team can rely on week after week. On the plus side, the experience is there.
Akron Preview | Schedule

6. Bowling Green Falcons

Quick Take: The offense has GOT to start working. Head coach Scot Loeffler knows how to get an O going, but it has to happen already to help overcome a defensive front that’s still going to have major issues.
