Does playing in TGL prohibit players from joining LIV Golf? A LIV official weighs in

The virtual golf league has built a roster with PGA Tour players the quality LIV hoped to sign.

DORAL, Fla. — The TGL is doing what LIV Golf promises to do.

The virtual golf league, backed by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, has built a roster with PGA Tour players the quality LIV hoped to sign in the last year, and is still anticipating this offseason.

Patrick Cantlay and Wyndham Clark highlighted the latest and final round of signings as TGL settles on 24 players. The league starts in January and will be played Monday nights on the Palm Beach State College campus in Palm Beach Gardens.

LIV and TGL have completely different formats and schedules and are not competing for players. But the possibility of anyone committing to a league run by LIV detractors Woods and McIlroy and also signing with LIV is unknown. Even if TGL is in partnership with the PGA Tour and the Tour is working on an agreement with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, which finances LIV, to merge business interests.

From the LIV side, Gary Davidson, who served as LIV’s acting COO before Lawrence Burian was named to the position Monday, said last week he does not believe “there would be a conflict” if a golfer who joined TGL showed interest in LIV.

“We’re open to who may want to play,” Davidson said. “We’re not limiting where our players come (from) to play. We obviously want them to commit to play in our 14-team events. Beyond that, we are very open to them playing in other tour events in other weeks, indeed on Monday night in TGL if they want to. It wouldn’t cause any issues from our side.

“Isn’t something that’s come up as being an issue as yet and I think that there would be room for that.”

LIV would celebrate adding any of the prominent names Woods and McIlroy have inked such as Cantlay, Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas, Rickie Fowler, Collin Morikawa, Matt Fitzpatrick, Xander Schauffele and Max Homa.

Even others like Keegan Bradley, Shane Lowry, Justin Rose, Adam Scott, Cameron Young, Tyrrell Hatton, Tommy Fleetwood and Billy Horschel would be a boost for LIV.

Everyone from Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson to LIV commissioner and CEO Greg Norman is anticipating the arrival of more significant players this offseason. LIV’s season ended Sunday with Bryson DeChambeau’s Crushers capturing the team championship at Doral.

“Personally myself, I’m speaking to numerous players who want to come on with LIV,” Norman said.

LIV now heads into an offseason in which it will put the finishing touches on a 14-event 2024 season and rosters will be retooled through a transfer window and promotions event.

Meanwhile, TGL is putting the finishing touches on its venue, an air-supported dome that will hold close to 2,000 people and cover an area almost the size of a football field.

The venue will include a 40-yard-wide short-game complex with three putting surfaces within the 3,800 square-foot green and three sand bunkers.

TGL will consist of six teams each with four PGA Tour players competing head-to-head in 18-hole match play. The matches will be capped at two hours. The schedule will include 15 regular-season Monday night matches followed by semifinals and finals matches.

Four of the six teams have been announced: Los Angeles Golf Club (owned by Alexis Ohanian, Serena Williams and Venus Williams), Boston (owned by Fenway Sports Group), Atlanta Drive GC (owned by Arthur M. Blank) and New York (owned by Steven Cohen and Cohen Private Ventures).

“The more I talked to the other players involved in TGL, the more I wanted to be a part of the competition,” Cantlay said. “This is a great opportunity to move golf forward providing something for our core fans while also showcasing our sport in a new, tech-forward, prime time and more digestible format.”

LIV Golf players had choice words for the TGL, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy at the season finale in Miami

“It’s a blatant fop to Tiger and Rory to keep them onside and earn them millions.”

Editor’s note: This story incorrectly named Ian Poulter for a quote that went unnamed in the original Telegraph story.

For a league that has struggled to stir up organic attention throughout its second season, LIV Golf has been letting its players try to make headlines this week at its season finale in Miami.

The LIV Golf Team Championship at Trump National Doral will be the final chapter of the Saudi Arabia-backed league’s sophomore campaign, and LIV players have been an open book — an eclipse-esc rarity—this week.

Phil Mickelson, who has just one top-10 finish in 13 LIV starts this year (remember, the fields only consist of 48 players), claimed that he “knows” more PGA Tour professionals will jump ship for the Greg Norman-led circuit.

“Do I think that? No, I know that’s going to happen,” Mickelson said Wednesday when asked whether he expects another movement of players. “When players look at LIV, they want to be a part of it. Everybody here is happy and enjoying what they’re doing and enjoying the team aspect of it. Enjoying each other and the camaraderie, and enjoying bringing golf globally and all that comes with playing this tour.

“So there’s a lot of players that see that and want to be a part of it. The question is how many spots are available? There’s a lot more players that want to come than have spots.”

Then, Bubba Watson claimed that there is incredible interest from outsiders to buy the RangeGoats GC, the LIV team he captains.

“Anywhere from 10 to 20 people have asked to buy the RangeGoats. There was three in Singapore, and then after Singapore the floodgates opened, there was even more,” he said. “There’s been talk this week. I met with people this week. Yeah, there’s quite a few.”

And now, other players have come out swinging at Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and the tech-infused league the two major championship winners are launching in January 2024, the TGL.

“Everyone – big businesses, celebrities, sports stars – suddenly want to get in with team sports,” Ian Poulter told The Telegraph. “Look at Wrexham [Football Club] with those Hollywood actors and other superstars at other teams, clubs and franchises.”

“It’s a blatant fop to Tiger and Rory to keep them onside and earn them millions of guess what, ‘guaranteed money,'” said an unnamed player.

“Suddenly” is quite the word choice to describe celebrities and sports stars’ interest in ownership and team sports. It’s been happening for years. Michael Jordan bought the Charlotte Hornets in 2010. Serena and Venus Williams bought a stake in the Miami Dolphins in 2009. Lebron James invested in Fenway Sports Group (Boston Red Sox, Liverpool FC) in 2011.

Not exactly a new trend.

And for the record, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney bought Wrexham almost three years ago.

“Look at the news in F1 (with McIlroy joining the likes of Anthony Johsua and Trent Alexander Arnold investing in the Alpine team). It’s not just the potential profit margin, it’s being involved and the fun to be had. It’s a win, win. Everyone wants a bit and I think LIV has been a leader in this, yeah. Definitely in golf.”

Poulter and teammate Lee Westwood face off against Abraham Ancer and Carlos Ortiz of Fireballs GC in the quarterfinals Friday.

TGL, the new-tech driven, prime time, team golf league announced the formation of the latest ownership group that is acquiring the rights to TGL’s San Francisco team and it includes Steph Curry.

Marc Lasry’s Avenue Sports Fund is the other primary investor. Additional investors include Curry’s Splash Brother teammate on the Golden State Warriors Klay Thompson and Andre Iguodala, another big golfer when he isn’t winning NBA titles.

“Avenue is thrilled to be working with Stephen Curry, in partnership with TMRW Sports as a founding TGL team,” Mr. Lasry said. “Our ownership group is excited to become stewards of TGL San Francisco and to represent Northern California, which is the center of tech innovation and is a perfect location for a TGL team in this extraordinary new sports league. Lasry has demonstrated leadership in sports, including as former co-owner of the championship Milwaukee Bucks NBA franchise. The investment in TGL San Francisco is one of the first investments to be made by the Avenue Sports Fund.

Curry’s strategic relationship with Lasry in the Avenue Sports Fund is the latest addition to a growing business portfolio that includes, the production company Unanimous Media; the lifestyle brand, UNDERRATED golf and basketball; his signature Kentucky Straight Bourbon, Gentleman’s Cut; and his foundation, EAT. LEARN. PLAY. that has raised more than $47 million for Oakland kids and families.

“Northern California is both the hub of tech innovation and home to world-class golf courses, some of the most-famous players in history and incredible golf fans, which makes San Francisco a natural choice for our next TGL team. Combining the business expertise of Avenue Capital Group with the championship mentality brought by these NBA superstars, this TGL team will generate a lot of energy in the Bay Area and around the world. We’re honored to welcome them to TGL,” said Mr. McCarley.

“Look at the roster, it’s crazy. It seems like everyone, and then there’s me.”

I’m trying to do my best and compete with these guys. These guys, obviously, major champions and best in the world. I guess a bit of my fun personality and hopefully, I can play some good golf there, too. I really like that, like type of format, team event. I’m not sure what team I’ll be on, but yeah, I’ll be really excited.”

Lee is now the 20th player to commit to the new circuit, leaving four spots up for grabs. Each of the six teams will roster four players, however, only three will play in each match allowing teams to give guys days off.

The new league is set to start in January 2024.

We all know about Monday Night Football, but who’s ready for some Monday Night Golf?

After announcing their new company TMRW Sports in August of 2022, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy also introduced TGL, a “new tech-infused league” that will partner with the PGA Tour.

Six teams of three PGA Tour players will compete in 15 regular season Monday night matches, followed by semifinals and finals matches, starting January 2024. The matches will be played at a tech-infused, short-game complex. Fans will be able to see every shot live over a 2-hour broadcast on primetime television.

Of the 18 players, so far 12 have been announced.

On Monday, the TGL announced a multi-year partnership with SoFi Technologies, a digital personal finance company. SoFi is now the presenting sponsor of TGL, and the league’s arena on the campus of Palm Beach State College will be named the SoFi Center.

The SoFi Center is a nearly 250,000-square-foot venue that will house nearly 2,000 people at the Palm Beach Gardens Campus of Palm Beach State College. The air-supported dome is 75 feet high and covers the entire playing surface (97 yards by 50 yards). The hitting screen is 46 feet by 64 feet, roughly 20 times larger than a standard simulator screen. The venue also features a 40-yard-wide short game complex with three dynamic putting surfaces on a larger 3,800-square-foot putting surface. And don’t forget the three sand bunkers.

There will be two plazas outside the venue for pre-event activities and the entire facility is ADA-accessible.
