Nevada vs Texas State Game Preview

Why Texas State Will Win

Nevada struggled to get the passing game going in its 23-12 win over New Mexico State.

The Aggies put up a decent fight, but this was a far, far cry from last year’s Wolf Pack team that could wing it around the yard with one of the nation’s most dangerous passing games.

Everything was kept short, Shane Illingworth and Nate Cox couldn’t make anything happen down the field, and the team was outgained by 46 yards.

Texas State’s offense will crank up the tempo, the receiving corps is far more dangerous than what New Mexico State showed Nevada in the opener, and 23 points and 257 yards of offense probably won’t get it done this week.

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Nevada Will Win

The Wolf Pack got the rough game out of the way.

This is a total rebuild year for the program after transfers and a coaching change led to a turn in how the offense is going to work. No, the passing game didn’t do much, but Toa Taua ran for 109 yards and Devonte Lee pounded out 61 with two scores – the ground attack will start carrying the team.

Texas State has to prove it can generate plays behind the line after failing to do that often enough last year and doing nothing against the run.

If everything works, Nevada should grind it out for well over 30 minutes and control the tempo throughout.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Saturday

What’s Going To Happen

Texas State will get its offense working well enough to keep the pressure on far better than New Mexico State did – and it’s not going to turn the ball over five times. Nevada, though, will come up with a few takeaways, the running game will work just fine, and it’ll be another grinding, ugly win.

Texas State Bobcats Preview 2022

Head coach Jake Spavial is doing the right things in the modern age of college football.

He was ahead of the game in all but blowing off normal recruiting and building things up through the transfer portal. His offense is fun and fast, his defense aggressive, and …

It’s not working yet. However, after five wins in his first two years, the four wins last year really did mark a step forward. In the new and improved Sun Belt it’ll be even more of a fight, but now he’s got experience and depth to go alone with the new parts through the portal.

There’s more talent than before, the schedule is full of winnable games, and there’s a real shot this season to push for the first winning season since 2014 and the program’s first bowl game ever.

Texas State Bobcats Preview 2022: Offense

The offense goes fast, likes to wing it around, and has an Air Raid style that tries to keep defenses on their heels. There’s one big problem – it isn’t working well enough to control games. The passing attack averaged just 194 yards per game, there were too many turnovers, and it was a struggle to move the chains. However, it’s an attack loaded with veterans and should be sharper if …

The quarterback play has to be sharper. With leading passer Brady McBride off to Appalachian State, it starts with the addition of Layne Hatcher from Arkansas State, Dillon Markiewicz is coming in from Syracuse to give it a shot, and former NC State transfer Ty Evans is there.

The receiving corps is full of producers. Javen Banks led the team with 553 yards and five scores, Marcell Barbee led the team with 40 catches and five touchdowns, and most of the other top targets are back along with a slew of receivers from the transfer portal highlighted by Demarcus Gregory from USF.

Can the experienced offensive line keep defenses out of the backfield? OT Dalton Cooper is one of the best in the Sun Belt, and there’s decent size at the other four spots.

The running game averaged 149 yards per game, and it gets back leading rusher Calvin Hill, who ran for 696 yards and averaged over five yards per carry. 6-0, 225-pound Jahmyl Jeter led the team with eight scores and was second with 384 yards.

Texas State Bobcats Preview 2022: Defense

The defense struggled to come up with big plays. It was the worst in the Sun Belt at generating sacks and pressure, it allowed 430 yards and 33 points per game, and it was mostly awful against the run.

The 18 sacks weren’t enough, but most of the production returns. Issiah Nixon led the team with four sacks, but he’s likely going to be a key backup at linebacker.

Second-leading tackler Sione Tupou is back on the outside after making 75 stops, and 6-2, 225-pound London Harris should do more in the middle after making 33 tackles on the outside.

The defensive front has decent bulk. 315-pound Gjemar Daniels will play a bigger role somewhere inside, and 300-pound Samuel Obiang will be more of a factor on the nose. Now the pass rush has to come from the end, and that starts with 280-pound Nico Ezidore being more disruptive.

The Bobcats only came up with three interceptions, and losing star tacklers and playmaker Zion Childress to Kentucky hurts, but Kordell Rodgers broke up seven passes from his corner spot, and veteran DeJordan Mask is a decent tackler.

Sun Belt spring football rankings and predictions with best and worst case scenarios for every team

The Sun Belt just got a whole lot bigger, cooler, and more interesting with a shocking expansion that should take the conference up another level.

FCS powerhouse James Madison gets to join in right away, and Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss were able to leave Conference USA and get in for the 2022 football season.

Here’s the problem – several Sun Belt programs that made strides last year are going to have tougher schedules to deal with. Several teams should be better, but might not have the results to show it.

The rankings are based on how good the teams should be and not the final projected records. Keeping in mind that this all could/might/will change when we make the final calls in August …

20. SEC is really, really good if you like it or not
19. James Madison, welcome to the show

The conference has only been doing football since 2001, and it was always the land of the paycheck programs – the ones the big boys scheduled for an easy 55-3 win on Homecoming.

In one of the shockers of the conference realignment changes over the last year, the Sun Belt wasn’t picked off in the expansion run. Instead, it added James Madison from the FCS and snagged Marshall, Southern Miss, and Old Dominion from Conference USA.

It was a battle to see if Conference USA could hold on to the Thundering Herd, the Golden Eagles, and the Monarchs through the football season, but the divorce is final, and those three are getting remarried right away to go along with a fun James Madison program.

How ugly did it get? Both Conference USA and the Sun Belt released their 2022 schedules including those three teams, but the Sun Belt has their teams.

The Sun Belt East will be made up of Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, James Madison, Marshall, and Old Dominion. The West will be Arkansas State, Louisiana, South Alabama, Southern Miss, Texas State, Troy, and ULM.

No, it’s not time for the SEC to start shaking, but it’s an amazing story that the Sun Belt is not only surviving, but it’s getting a whole lot stronger and more entertaining.

Texas State vs Arkansas State Game Preview

Why Texas State Will Win

Texas State just has to get the O going a little bit.

Arkansas State can’t run the ball at all, the defense is the worst in America – allowing 522 yards per game – and it has a bad penchant for turning the ball over a whole lot.

Texas State had its movement early in the season with a decent offensive balance, but the running game was always just okay and the passing attack has yet to hit 300 yards.

Keep the Arkansas State from going off, and everything else should work, however …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Arkansas State Will Win

The wins aren’t there, but Arkansas State is playing better.

Yeah, it got blasted by Appalachian State and South Alabama, but it pushed Louisiana and gave Georgia State an interesting run last week.

No, there’s no running game, but the passing attack will get plenty of time to work against a Texas State defense without any pass rush.

Arkansas State might have a whole slew of defensive problems, but it takes the ball away – coming up with five in the last two games – and …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

The Red Wolves haven’t been able to score a whole lot, but the yards have been there. The points will come in this, too.

Texas State doesn’t have the scoring punch to keep up in any sort of a shootout.

Over the offseason, Arkansas State should be more of a tweak than an overhaul, but in this, it’ll get the job done with the O – even that Texas State will stay in it with a few takeaways.

Texas State vs Coastal Carolina Game Preview

Why Texas State Will Win

Coastal Carolina isn’t quite the same without Grayson McCall.

The offense still runs well, and there was a terrific balance against Georgia State last week, but it was a 42-40 loss helped by two turnovers. If that doesn’t seem like two giveaways for a high-powered team like this shouldn’t matter, it’s a bit wrong.

Coastal Carolina hadn’t turned the ball over twice in a game since last year’s win over South Alabama in early November. It was a 15-game stretch without two big mistakes, and Texas State will need more than that.

The passing attack hasn’t been bad – hitting 260 yards in four of the last five games – but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Coastal Carolina Will Win

The Bobcat defense has been crazy-consistent in how mediocre it is.

It’s going to give up at least 200 yards through the air and over 160 yards on the ground, because that’s what it does.

Coastal Carolina QB Bryce Carpenter isn’t McCall, but he’s a veteran who knows what he’s doing. He’ll hit enough deep shots to open things up, and the deep rotation of running backs will rip off yards in chunks on the way to well over 200 yards.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

The Chanticleers might need too much help to win another Sun Belt title, but they’ll take care of the Bobcats in a bit of a shootout, and then hope Troy can get by Appalachian State.

Just getting a win on Senior Day will be enough.

Georgia Southern vs Texas State Game Preview

Why Georgia Southern Will Win

Can the running game get going again?

The team is playing out the string before getting the Clay Helton era going, but it still has a dangerous enough running game to get going against a Texas State run defense that hasn’t been a rock.

Louisiana and ULM were able to throw well enough to not have to crank up the ground again, but the teams that want to run for 200 yards have been able to do it – the Bobcats are going up well over 400 yards per game overall.

No, the Georgia Southern running game hasn’t been amazing over the last few weeks, but going against Troy, South Alabama, Georgia State, and Coastal Carolina had a whole lot to do with that.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Texas State Will Win

It’s not that Georgia Southern isn’t pushing it – it battled hard against Troy and Georgia State in close games – but it’s having a hard time getting the O going.

Texas State is coming off a nice win over ULM with the passing game doing enough to get by, and it should go off on the Georgia Southern secondary.

No, the running game isn’t doing enough to control games, and it’s not doing enough to help out the beleaguered pass defense that’s getting lit up for close to 300 yards per game.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

Georgia Southern won’t be sharp enough.

The Texas State attack will throw well – even though the Eagles held Coastal Carolina to 85 yards last week – and should be able to overcome a few giveaways with enough takeaways of its own to get by.

It won’t be anything beautiful, but it’ll be two wins in a row with a victory in the home finale.

ULM vs Texas State Game Preview

Why ULM Will Win

There’s still a possible bowl game to play for, but it’s almost certainly not happening without a win here.

The Warhawks hit a snag with a blowout loss to Appalachian State, but that doesn’t stop all the positives for a team that has a whole lot of problems.

Forget about third downs on both sides of the ball, and the pass defense is a rumor, but the team doesn’t beat itself. There aren’t a lot of flags – there aren’t any – and winning the turnover margin cures a lot of ills.

Texas State is almost as bad on third downs and it screws up a whole lot with turnovers and flags.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Texas State Will Win

The Bobcats are struggling more and more offensively, but they need to run well to pull up fast.

ULM has been hammered by teams that commit to the ground game. It allowed 250 rushing yards or more in four of the last five games, and Texas State has to give it a shot.

It only got to 200 yards once, and it was the win over an okay South Alabama team.

They ran the ball 48 times against the Jaguars, and won. They ran 44 times against FIU, and won. They ran 44 times against Incarnate Word, and lost, but it was a fun fight.

Offenses have run on ULM 42 times or more in four of the last five games.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

No, really. How is ULM doing this?

It absolutely has to come up with takeaways to make everything else easier. It came up with three turnovers against South Alabama, Liberty and Jackson State and won. It came up with three in the opener against Kentucky and lost – but that was Kentucky – and it generated a total of two in the other four games and lost.

Texas State is -7 in turnover margin with 12 giveaways in the last four games.

Texas State vs Louisiana Game Preview

Why Texas State Will Win

How well can the Bobcats run the ball?

They’ve had moments here and there, but they were able to overcome a slew of their other issues by running all over South Alabama in a stunning win a few weeks ago. When they can’t control things on the ground – even a little bit – bad things happen.

Louisiana has been a bit too inconsistent. The wins are rolling, but some days the passing attack works, and some days if doesn’t really show up. The offense pitched a gem against Appalachian State, and then it went right back to moving the ball well without scoring enough in a too-tight 28-27 win over a bad Arkansas State team.

Texas State has to keep this close – four of the six Louisiana wins were decided by eight points or fewer.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Louisiana Will Win

The running game is on a roll.

After starting the season slow out of the gate, it all started to work with four 225-yard-and-more days in the last five games, and they’re about to push for 300 in this.

Texas State’s defense hasn’t been all that awful, but it doesn’t do any one thing at a high level. There isn’t enough of a push into the backfield, and the run defense doesn’t hold up well at the point of attack.

The Bobcat run D allowed 200 yards or more in three of the last four games, but …

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

This is a weird Louisiana team.

It’s on a six-game winning streak, it blew the doors off of Appalachian State, but it struggled against … Arkansas State? South Alabama? Georgia Southern?

A win is a win is a win, but it would be nice to come up with a breather going into the finishing kick. This can’t be a West-clinching game, but if the Ragin’ Cajuns win and ULM loses to Appalachian State, they’ll earn a piece of the division title.

It won’t be easy.

Texas State won’t come up with enough good defensive stops, but the offense will be dangerous enough to make Levi Lewis and company keep pushing.
