Which current SEC college football programs are the greatest of all-time according to the UPI and USA Today Coaches final polls?

Using a ranking system taking all the AP final college football polls and assigning 25 points to the national champion, 24 for the final No. 2 team, 23 for the No. 3 team on down.

There’s no question who the elephant is in the room – it’s Alabama’s spot up top and it’s not even close. However, after 2019 and the national championship, LSU moved past Tennessee to the No. 2 all-time spot, and Georgia is now tied with the Vols.

One note on this – this is made up of current SEC programs and factoring in their histories. Obviously Texas A&M, Missouri, and others are new to the SEC world over the last few years, but all of their records count.

Again, this is based on the CFN formula. This isn’t any official ranking coming from USA TODAY or the Coaches Poll.

Texas A&M wins the Capital One Orange Bowl

Final Score: Texas A&M 41, North Carolina 27
CFN Prediction: Texas A&M 34, North Carolina 20
Line: Texas A&M -10, o/u: 65.5

5. It’ll go down in history as a misleading Orange Bowl – and ACC bowl season

It was a much, much closer game than the 41-27 final score, but stats are stats.

Including the College Football Playoff games, the Orange Bowl continues to be a bit of a dog – at least in the final score.

This game makes it ten of the last 13 decided by double-digits, and going way back, it’s been 18 of the last 25.

It’ll also go down as a misleading bowl season for the ACC.

Yeah, it was 0-6 – you are what your record is – but two of the losses came in the College Football Playoff, Wake Forest was an underdog to Wisconsin, NC State was a slight dog to Kentucky, Miami was an underdog to Oklahoma State – and lost QB D’Eriq King to a knee injury just as the team got rolling – and there was this loss.

North Carolina played a whole lot better than 41-27.

The ACC was the dog in five of the six games, but after a wildly fun year getting two teams into the playoff, it was a rough finish.

Three Reasons Why You Should Watch The Capital One Orange Bowl

If you like your bowl games with massive contrasts in styles, this is about as big as it gets. North Carolina does a good job of controlling the clock, but it likes to hit the home run, relies on the big plays to overcome too many sleepy lulls during games – at least a few key ones this year – and it’s going to keep on coming with a quick pace that can strike quickly.

However, the offense is missing star RB Javonte Williams and top WR Dyami Brown – they’re both out getting ready for the NFL – and it’s going to need to get used to the tempo slowing down to an almost dead stop.

Texas A&M doesn’t do anything all that fast, but it’s going to come into this was a major attitude after being passed over by the College Football Playoff committee for the fourth spot in the mini-tournament. It plays a deliberate style that dominates the clock, grinds out drives, and makes opposing teams press when they finally get the ball.

It’s a veteran team with a great back in Isaiah Spiller, a veteran QB in Kellen Mond, and a defense that led the SEC in yards allowed and was third in the nation against the run. North Carolina was fourth in the country in yards per carry.

How many other bowl games feature a matchup of national championship-winning head coaches? None, unless it’s Clemson vs. Alabama for the national title.

UNC’s Mack Brown is fantastic in bowls going 10-2 since 2000, and one of those losses was to Alabama for the 2009 national title. However, the Tar Heels have only won three of their last ten bowl games going back to 2001.

On the other side, A&M has won its last two bowls under Jimbo Fisher – and six of its last nine – who’s 6-2 all-time in bowls with one of those losses coming in the 2014 College Football Playoff.

College Football Playoff 4th Team Will Be: Notre Dame or Texas A&M?

Who deserves the honor of being the No. 4 team in the College Football Playoff, Notre Dame or Texas A&M?

[jwplayer PkCtjTd4-boEY74VG]

Who deserves the honor of being the No. 4 team in the College Football Playoff, Notre Dame or Texas A&M?

Contact @PeteFiutak

We know who the top three will be in the final College Football Playoff rankings.

Alabama will be No. 1, Clemson and Ohio State will almost certainly be 2 and 3 – in that order – and No. 4 will be …

And that’s the drama.

Notre Dame and Texas A&M are the two most likely options for the No. 4 spot, and both were saved by Florida not being able to get by Alabama in the SEC Championship – that would’ve at least made things interesting. It also helped the overall cause that USC lost the Pac-12 Championship and Cincinnati was meh in the American Athletic Conference Championship.

So with all that in mind, let’s have the two contenders argue it out. It’s 2020, so, of course, it’s being done over a Zoom call …

Notre Dame: There’s no debate. We beat Clemson. We won ten games. We had a rough day against the Tigers when they were operating at peak efficiency, and we should be in with our better schedule. We have the good wins. You don’t.

Texas A&M: Dude, you got trucked 34-10, and it wasn’t even that close. You think America has the slightest interest in seeing you play Alabama?

Notre Dame: You think America has the slightest interest in seeing you play Alabama again? You did that already. It was awful.

Texas A&M: Yeah, way back in Week 2 for us on October 3rd. We needed a bit to get warmed up, and we did get the passing game moving for 335 yards, and …

Notre Dame: You lost 52-24. Wait, that whole needing to get warmed up thing. Are we supposed to excuse you for beating Vanderbilt 17-12 in the opener?

Texas A&M: Notre Dame 27, Duke 13. That was your opener. Oh yeah, and that 12-7 win over Louisville was a classic. Now can we move on? We’re a different, stronger, better team now. We’re in a groove on a six-game winning streak, we’ve won our last five games by double-digits after beating Florida, and …

Notre Dame: And … what? You beat what? That 20-7 win over LSU made the world a lesser place, and you beat Auburn. Whooop-dee-doo. Again, we beat Clemson …

Texas A&M: Yeah, without Trevor Lawrence.

Notre Dame: But DJ Uiagalelei is going to be every bit as good, and …

Texas A&M: You got blown up by a true freshman quarterback for over 400 yards, and you think you’re going to do anything against the Alabama passing game?

Notre Dame: If you’d let me finish – when Clemson is No. 2 in the final rankings, we’ll officially have the best win of the 2020 college football season. You don’t have one of those, do you Tex?

Texas A&M: No, we’re just the second-best team in the best conference in college football, and our one loss was to the be-all-end-all No. 1 team on the road. We should be considered No. 2 in the rankings and we’re arguing about 4?

(popping up on the call) Cincinnati: Hey guys, what’s happening?

Notre Dame: How’d you get on this call?

Cincinnati: We heard you were talking about who should be No. 4, and we went 9-0 with an American Athletic Conference Championship, and …

Texas A&M: I’m sorry, you cut out. A what, championship?

Cincinnati: American Athle…

Texas A&M: And you played who in this championship … Alabama? Oklahoma? Ohio State …

Cincinnati: Tulsa!

Notre Dame: Oh Tulsa … super, super … so you, of course, with everything on the line and style points meaning the world for a team that didn’t play a Power Five team, you won by what, 50, 60?

Cincinnati: 27-24 on an exciting walk-off field goal with no time left, and …

(Cincinnati feed gets cut off and goes dead)

Texas A&M: (silent)

Notre Dame: (silent)

Texas A&M: Where were we?

Notre Dame: Look, you’re really good, and we were off against Clemson in the ACC title game, but we’ve got the lines that can hold up, we’ve got the experience, and we can slow things down just like you do. There were some lightweight wins along the way, but we won four road games in a five-game stretch, ending with a win over North Carolina. Beating Auburn is nice, but that road win over the Tar Heels will get us the nod.

Texas A&M: Yeah, you’ve got the style we like – game recognizes game when it comes to time of possession, tempo, and great line play – but we held the ball for over 44 minutes against Tennessee, our scores are generally not blowouts partly because of our design, and again, the SEC factor has to play SOME sort of a role here.

Notre Dame: Yeah, but 8-1 isn’t 10-1, and again, we’ve got the great win that you don’t …

Texas A&M: Wasn’t Clemson really hurt defensively, and again, no Lawrence?

Notre Dame: Yeah, but …

Texas A&M: And I know this isn’t supposed to matter, but it’s not like you’ve exactly distinguished yourself against the biggest of the big boys over the years in the bowl season. We’ve seen what you can do, and it’s nice, but there’s a hard-ceiling you obviously can’t crack. We’re getting rolling here under a national championship head coach. Watch what we’re about to do as we’re on the verge of something special.

Notre Dame: We’re better than you think. We actually might have the style and the potential to give Alabama a problem. Again, we had a bad day in Charlotte, but our lines really are that good, our run defense is much better than it looked this time around against the Tigers, and we have a feeling that we can possibly smash the Tide in the mouth a little bit better than even you. Also, we …

Cincinnati (wearing a fake mustache and sunglasses, speaking in a lowered voice): Oh, how am I on HERE? I must have pressed the wrong button. Hey, what’s this I hear about this great Group of Five program that …

Texas A&M: Hey, Irish, good luck in the Orange Bowl … you’re going to need against one of the better SEC teams.

Notre Dame: Good luck against Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl … they’ve got it figured out now.

So what’s really going to happen?

The committee is almost certainly going to put Notre Dame in at the 4.

Cincinnati just doesn’t have the schedule or the big wins. Had it crushed Tulsa by 30, there would’ve been a strong argument to finally give the Group of Five a shot since Texas A&M and Notre Dame have already lost huge to two of the playoff teams. But no – that’s not happening.

There will also be at least a discussion about Ohio State. 6-0 is nice, and the Buckeyes were missing players, but they only faced two okay teams this year and struggled to survive against both. Let’s not waste time with this, though.

The College Football Playoff committee had a thing for the Buckeyes from the start, and it’s certainly not going to crack now – no chance the unbeaten Big Ten champion isn’t in this thing.

It’s not fair to Texas A&M, considering that if this was a normal year with a normal schedule, most of the teams on its slate would’ve been at least .500 or better thanks to several non-conference wins, but that’s the deal.

Notre Dame has more wins. It’s top win over Clemson is better than A&M’s top win over Florida, and the second-best win over North Carolina is stronger – at least by the CFP rankings – than A&M’s second-best win over Auburn.

The two ugly losses will cancel each other out.

There’s no real right or wrong answer here – neither one really has to be in the tournament, but they each can make a case over Ohio State. One team has to be left out.

Let it be fuel to a rising Texas A&M program that’s on the verge of being a powerhouse that should be in contention for the College Football Playoff on a regular basis.

Expect it to be Notre Dame vs. Alabama in the Sugar, and Clemson vs. Ohio State in whatever the hell they’re going to call that thing in AT&T Stadium.

Texas A&M (7-1) vs Tennessee (3-6) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Texas A&M Will Win

A&M won’t know where it stands, but it can set the pace.

It plays an early game just as the Big Ten Championship gets going and before the ACC and SEC championships. There won’t be any scoreboard watching, but if Northwestern can stun the world against Ohio State, there’s a chance A&M can move right on up and into the No. 4 CFP spot.

If it can destroy Tennessee, and if Notre Dame beats Clemson, it’ll have a beef. If Clemson blows out Notre Dame, A&M might have an interesting argument that it really is one of the four best teams.

But again, none of College Football Playoff ramifications will matter without a dominant performance by the Aggies.

The offensive line and the running game were amazing against South Carolina and Auburn over the last few weeks, the D leads the SEC in third down stops, the O is third in the nation in third down conversions, and the team owns the time of possession battle.

Tennessee is totally miserable at moving the chains. A&M is going to have the ball for ten more minutes, but …

Why Tennessee Will Win

For all of the problems and issues, Tennessee has a loaded run defense.

The secondary is having a rough go, but up front, the Vols allowed just 72 yards on the ground against Florida and Vanderbilt in the last two games, giving away just 1.5 yards per carry. Georgia and Arkansas had some success, and Alabama went Alabama with five rushing scores, but no one has hit 200 yards on the ground against this D.

Offensively, the Vols have something in Harrison Bailey. He hit 14-of-18 pass for 207 yards and two scores in the blowout win over Vandy, he’s the freshman quarterback who should grow into the job – if he doesn’t get pulled again – and …

What’s Going To Happen

Texas A&M has to be amazing.

It’s never going to be a flashy and splashy team that will win on style points, but playing great defense, controlling the clock, and methodically coming away with a decisive win should be sexy enough to any committee member who knows his or her stuff.

The two programs have only played three times. A&M won 45-38 in 2016, Tennessee won in a blowout in the 2005 Cotton Bowl, and the Vols took home a 3-0 victory in the 1957 Gator.

A&M will post a good number – even if it doesn’t excite the eye test.

Texas A&M (6-1) vs Auburn (5-3) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Texas A&M Will Win

The Auburn defense is struggling.

It’s not bad against the mediocre offenses, and there’s no shame in getting ripped up by Alabama, but Tennessee came up with more yards than the Tide did – 464 yards to 445 – and consistency has been a huge issue.

The run defense is too soft, there isn’t enough of a pass rush, and both of those things lead to Auburn’s biggest issue.

Third down defense.

The 2019 Tigers allowed teams to convert on just 30% of their third down chances. This year? An SEC-worst 54%, allowing 60% conversions or more in five of the eight games.

Texas A&M might not be a high-flying thrill show like Alabama or Florida, but it’s very steady and very solid – it’s fifth in the nation in third down conversions.

Control the clock, use the deliberate style, and own the tempo.

Week 14 College Schedule

Why Auburn Will Win

Bo Nix and the passing game are fine.

There were problems against Alabama, but again, blow off everything that happens against the Tide. More importantly for the sophomore, he has been more accurate, and the passing game has boosted up to 220 yards or more in each of the last five games.

That’s part of the reason why Auburn might be able to beat Texas A&M at its own games and win on third downs.

The Tigers have been consistently solid on the money downs. This all ties into how they can pull this off by being deliberate.

A&M will win the time of possession battle, but it’s not going to be a huge margin. As last week showed against LSU, this isn’t the most dynamic Aggie offense at times. As mediocre as the Auburn D has been at times, can it rise up and pull off something big on Senior Day?

Losing to Bama stinks, but ruining A&M’s season would matter. However …

CFN Experts Picks: College

What’s Going To Happen

Texas A&M’s offense is going to be better than it was in the bad weather against LSU last week.

The Aggie defense has been a killer against the run – it hasn’t allowed more than 90 yards in four of the last five games – and sophomore RB Isaiah Spiller has grown into a star with four 100-yard games in the last five.

Auburn will play well, and this will go down to the wire, but when the Aggies need one last definite drive, they’ll get it with Spiller carrying the way.

Texas A&M (5-1) vs LSU (3-3) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why LSU Will Win

The young parts are stepping up.

This might be a lost, wildly disappointing season, but there’s hope. Freshman QB TJ Finley is coming off a nice 271-yard, two touchdown day in the win over Arkansas – he didn’t throw any picks – sophomore RB Tyrion Davis-Price pounded out his second 100-yard day in the last three games, and the receiving corps is still doing just fine.

The Tigers might not be the high-flying fun show of last year, but they’re doing a strong job at controlling the ball, the attack is averaging a solid 452 yards per game, and the defensive side continues to do a great job of getting into the backfield.

However …

Why Texas A&M Will Win

LSU is great at controlling the tempo, and it’s great at getting into the backfield. Texas A&M is elite at both of those things

The Aggies lead the SEC in time of possession, lead the nation in third down conversions, and they’re the best in the conference in tackles for loss and total defense.

QB Kellen Mond might not be Florida’s Kyle Trask, and he’s not getting the hype of Alabama’s Mac Jones, but he’s having a terrific season as he’s playing like the SEC veteran he is. He’s not making big mistakes, he’s taking the plays that are there without forcing his passes, and he’s got a handle on the offense.

Now it’s redemption time after he threw for 92 yards and three interceptions in last year’s 50-7 loss.

What’s Going To Happen

LSU has alternated loss-win-loss-win all the way through, and now, after a nice win over Arkansas …

Texas A&M hasn’t been able to play over the last few weeks, and now it should be ready to play like it’s a half-step faster. It’s still in the College Football Playoff discussion, and it’s going to look like it.
