Titans make an unexpected GM change that could impact the top pick

Firing GM Ran Carthon a year after giving him a lucrative contract extension shows how unsteady the Titans are at the top

Put any of those ideas of what the Tennessee Titans might do with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft on hold. There will be a different person making that pick than has been expected.

In an odd move, Titans ownership fired general manager Ran Carthon on Tuesday. This comes after the same ownership gave Carthon a lucrative contract extension a year ago and opened up the purse strings to allow him to build the team as he saw fit following the departure of longtime head coach Mike Vrabel.

Now, Carthon is out after the Titans fell from 6-11 in 2023 to 3-14 in 2024 and it became increasingly obvious that they didn’t have their long-term solution at quarterback. After tabbing Will Levis in the second round of 2023, Carthon won’t get a second chance in Tennessee to fix the problem.

The Titans offseason needs haven’t changed with Carthon’s firing. But now there is the variable of the unknown GM commodity who will be making the pick at No. 1 and controlling free agency. In Carthon’s stead, Titans Director of Football Operations Chad Brinker will run the team and the search, according to a statement from owner Amy Adams Strunk. In that statement, Strunk also announced that Brian Callahan will return as head coach.

Titans rookie T’Vondre Sweat showing up big in training camp

Titans rookie T’Vondre Sweat showing up big in training camp, answering pre-draft questions about his fitness and dedication

T’Vondre Sweat is a very large human. While playing at Texas, the defensive tackle used his massive frame very effectively but inconsistently. Sweat’s promise led the Tennessee Titans to select Sweat with the No. 37 overall pick in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Sweat was often projected as a likely first-round prospect before concerns about his weight and dedication to football, plus a DUI arrest, caused him to slide into the second round.

Some of the early reviews on Sweat from Titans camp are easing the fears about the 360-plus-pound defensive tackle. He’s looking engaged and polished for a rookie who missed the early offseason work.

This quick review from Titan Sized’s Will Lomas aptly sums up the reports coming out of Tennessee on Sweat,

Since the pads came on, it has become clear that even good NFL linemen are going to struggle to maintain their anchor against Sweat.

It’s early, of course, but so far Sweat seems to be everything the Titans wanted from their second-round pick.

Two former 1st round picks now trying out at Titans rookie minicamp

Two former 1st round picks, William Jackson and Shane Ray, are now trying out at Titans rookie minicamp

Rookie minicamp is a chance for the new players to get acclimated into the NFL and their new team. But it’s not always just the rookies who are getting a chance to show what they can do.

Teams are also allowed to invite veterans for auditions on a tryout basis in the rookie minicamp. The Tennessee Titans have a couple of familiar veteran names in for tryouts this weekend.

Former first-round picks William Jackson III and Shane Ray are trying to show enough to earn another NFL shot in Tennessee. Jackson, a cornerback, was the Bengals’ first-round pick in 2016 and played several seasons in Cincinnati and Washington before injuries derailed his career early in the 2022 season.

Ray was a first-rounder by the Broncos in 2015, and he’s been out of the league since 2018. The defensive end battled injuries throughout his four NFL seasons. Ray did play in the CFL and also spent the 2023 season on the Buffalo Bills’ I.R. list.

Both Jackson and Ray have NFL ties to new Tennessee head coach Brian Callahan from previous stops.

Will Levis dominates in big Titans win in his first start

Rookie QB Will Levis dominates in big Titans win in his first start

There was much uncertainty surrounding the Tennessee Titans and the quarterback position going into week eight. With Ryan Tannehill set to miss at least one game and last year’s second-round pick Malik Willis not showing quite enough in his brief appearances, the Titans pivoted towards rookie second-round pick Will Levis to carry the torch and see what he could do. He did not disappoint.

With a huge upset win over the Atlanta Falcons, Levis appears to have injected renewed hope into the Titans’ organization in his first start. It wasn’t exactly a “let the defense win the game” type of win either as Levis showed off big time. With 19 completions on 29 attempts, 238 yards through the air, and a whopping four touchdown passes, Levis put the NFL on notice with the most dominant rookie quarterback performance in a game so far this season. Levis showed off his cannon arm, quick whip release, ability to extend plays, and raw leadership ability in the win and quickly justified his draft position.

There is little question about who should be the starter in Tennessee moving forward, and while there will be an argument in the coaching room between Levis and Tannehill, it would seem a fool’s errand to trot out the struggling veteran instead of the red-hot rookie. Expect to see plenty more Levis in the future. If he can build on that stellar performance on Sunday, he could be a suddenly fringe candidate for offensive rookie of the year.

Undrafted Division III college player makes Titans 53-man roster

Undrafted Division III college player Anthony Kendall from Baldwin-Wallace makes the Tennessee Titans 53-man roster

In a lesson of never giving up on your dreams, newly minted Tennessee Titans rookie defensive back Anthony Kendall officially made the 53 man roster. Kendall was unranked as a high school recruit and received little interest from any schools at the Division I level. In lieu of his lack of offers, Kendall made the leap to Division III school Baldwin Wallace University where he played for five seasons.

What makes this story even more miraculous is the fact that Kendall did not play any any college all-star games, and was not even invited to the combine, so instead he took it upon himself to attend three different pro days during the draft process over a one week span. The numbers Kendall put up matched the best athletes at his position in the same draft class, and multiple teams took notice of his excellent athletic ability.

Titans CB Anthony Kendall to make 53-man roster

After impressing in training camp both on defense and on special teams, Kendall will have reached his NFL dream and will likely see the field week one of the regular season as a special teams players. It will be interesting to see how Kendall’s inspiring story plays out.

The Titans also had undrafted Caleb Murphy from D-II Ferris State make the initial 53-man roster.

Titans QB Will Levis expected to play second half vs Bears

Malik Willis will start the Titans preseason game on Saturday.

The backup quarterback competition for the Tennessee Titans starts on Saturday. The Titans are taking on the Chicago Bears in Week One of their preseason schedule and the Titans will start Malik Willis and he will play the first half with Will Levis playing in the second half.

Willis was the Titans third-round pick in 2022 out of Liberty. Willis came into the league very raw and in limited action last season, he struggled. This prompted Tennessee to draft former Kentucky standout Will Levis in the second round of the 2023 NFL draft.

Levis and Willis are vying to be the backup to Ryan Tannehill this season and his eventual successor with the Titans.

Willis has served as the primary No. 2 quarterback throughout training camp with Levis slowly adding in more reps over the last week. We don’t expect to see much of Tannehill at all in preseason with the Titans coaching staff tasked with sorting out the rest of the quarterback depth chart.

Draft reaction: Titans select Peter Skoronski No. 11 overall

Reacting to the Tennessee Titans selecting Northwestern OL Peter Skoronski at No. 11 overall in the 2023 NFL draft

To the surprise of some, there was no quarterback for the Tennessee Titanss in the first round of the 2023 NFL draft. The Titans stayed put instead of dealing up, and GM Ran Carthon selected perhaps the best offensive tackle in the class in Northwestern’s Peter Skoronski.

Skoronski was dominant at Northwestern, proving to be one of the top offensive linemen in the entire class. Last season Skoronski put up awesome stats, with only 11 quarterback hurries and one sack given up the entire year. He was efficient and consistent in both the running and passing games.

After the loss of long time franchise staple Taylor Lewan, Skoronski projects to start right away at left tackle. His elite feet, technique, fierce hands, and consistency, Skoronski will have little trouble succeeding right away at the next level in his protection of Ryan Tannehill.

The Titans noted as a team looking to move up in the top of the draft

The Titans hold the No. 11 pick and could be in the market for a quarterback

As mock drafts fly off the presses, it’s always interesting to see projected trades. When a top draft analyst and insider like NFL.com’s Daniel Jeremiah suggests some deeper insight into a potential trade in the top 10, it’s worth delving into.

On the latest episode of his “Move the Sticks” podcast, Jeremiah touts the Tennessee Titans as a team looking to make a big move upward in the draft. Tennessee currently sits at No. 11 overall.

“Can I give you the team that I have been told to keep an eye on that’s exploring this and looking into this?” Jeremiah stated. “Again, this is just people around the league who said, ‘do not sleep on Numero 11’. The Tennessee Titans.”

The Titans could be in the market for a new quarterback. Veteran Ryan Tannehill is entering the final year of his 4-year, $118 million contract and he coming off a down year. Malik Willis did little to show he’s the potential answer in his rookie season audition.

The obvious team to watch in relation to the Titans is the Arizona Cardinals at No. 3 overall. The Cardinals new GM is Monti Osssenfort, who was hired this winter after spending the last three seasons as the director of player personnel for the Titans.

Such a move, from 11 to No. 3, would likely cost the Titans their third-round pick this year and a first-rounder in 2024, based on historical precedence. That would make quite the initial splash for new Titans GM Ran Carthon.

Why Jacksonville Jaguars Will Win

Tennessee games aren’t going to crank up the points.

It wants to try winning with Derrick Henry, a defense that stuffs everyone on key downs, and keeps the big plays through the air to a minimum. The team doesn’t take a lot of chances, and while that limits the turnovers, there aren’t a slew of home runs.

The Jaguars can score, but they’re at their best when they hang around and come through late. They should benefit from a Tennessee attack that can’t and won’t run away and hide with this, but …

Week 14 CFN NFL Expert Picks

Why Tennessee Titans Will Win

Don’t make too much out of the two game losing streak.

The Titans played Cincinnati tough, and they couldn’t keep up with the best team in the NFL in the 35-10 loss to Philadelphia.

It’s going to be the defense that takes over in this.

Jacksonville’s offense is throwing well, but it hasn’t hit 100 yards on the ground in the last three games, and that’s not going to suddenly get better in Nashville. The Titans lead the NFL in fewest touchdowns allowed and are third overall against the run.

Tennessee has allowed over 100 rushing yards three times and is 1-5 when giving up more than 65 yards …

What’s Going To Happen

Jacksonville might push for 65 yards, but it’s going to be a fight to get the offense moving consistently. The offense and team are improving, but they’re not going to do much of anything on third downs and won’t be able to hold up in the second half.

Derrick Henry will have one of his best games in a while and the D will take care of the rest.
