Rutgers vs Temple Game Preview

Why Temple Will Win

The Owls got the first win in the Stan Drayton era, and now that they’re tuned up a bit following the 30-14 win over Lafayette.

The D has been fantastic so far on third downs – allowing just 16% of conversions over the first two games – and the O is working around a rotation of backs to find the right fit.

Rutgers isn’t going to come out winging it all around the yard, the offense isn’t anything amazing – destroying Wagner 66-7 just isn’t that big of a deal, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Rutgers Will Win

Zero. That’s how many turnovers Temple has forced so far.

Five. That’s how many the Rutgers D has generated, and now it gets to go after a Temple attack that fumbled it away three times in both of its games.

Lafayette was never going to do anything big on the Temple defense, but Duke was able to run well and threw for close to 330 yards.

The Rutgers run defense has been a brick wall allowing just 0.8 yards per carry – granted, Boston College and Wagner don’t/can’t run – and the Owls aren’t going to pound away.

As long as the Scarlet Knights can own the offensive line, then …

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Here comes the Rutgers running game.

The offense has rolled for 540 yards and eight touchdowns in the first two games, it’ll control the clock and the Tempo, and the three takeaways will make this easy in the second half.

The Temple offense will be shut down cold after the first drive.

Temple vs Lafayette Game Preview

Why Lafayette Will Win

The Leopards are going to bring the defense.

The offensive side might not be anything special, but the secondary has been good for the last few years, the offense’s job is to not turn it over, and the goal is to keep the game low scoring and tight late.

They were able to get a touchdown against Sacred Heart last week, missed the extra point, and that’s all they needed in the 6-0 win. Meanwhile, Temple was awful in Stan Drayton’s debut, losing 30-0 to Duke with no passing game, less of a ground attack, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Temple Will Win

Lafayette gained a grand total of 113 yards with eight through the air against Sacred Heart.

The offense did nothing, it was 1-of-11 on third down tries, and as long as Temple doesn’t get hit with a slew of turnovers and mistakes, it should be fine.

For all of the problems against Duke, Temple was good against the run and was solid in the second half.

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Temple can’t have any problems here.

It’s all a work in progress under Drayton, but there are just enough pieces there on defense to keep the Leopards from doing much of anything. This is the game to get the ground attack rolling.

Duke vs Temple Game Preview

Why Temple Will Win

New head coach Stan Drayton knows how to work a running game, but his early plus should be the passing attack.

Former Georgia Bulldog D’Wan Mathis is a talented enough quarterback to cause problems, and the receiving corps has the potential to push the Duke secondary that allowed the second-most passing yards per game in college football.

The Owl defense shouldn’t be all that bad – it might just take a little time.

There’s good size in the secondary, enough activity on the line to make things happen in the backfield, and the transfer portal is providing a lot of help for the depth against an offense that failed to hit 30 points in any of the last eight games.

Week 1 Expert Picks, Thursday & Friday

Why Duke Will Win

The offensive line should be good enough to take control early on.

The skill spot playmakers might not be anything great quite yet, but as long as the veteran front five can take over, the offense will move.

New head coach Mike Elko knows defense, and while he’s taking over a group that was the worst in the nation, he’s got good linebackers to start with, the transfer portal helped out the secondary, and the line will hold up against the Owl offensive front.

Temple has size on the O line, but the attack isn’t going to move the chains on a consistent basis.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Thursday & Friday

What’s Going To Happen

Who can rise up from an awful 3-9 season the fastest?

Duke’s defense was the biggest problem as 2021 went on, and the new coaching staff should be able to tweak things enough – expect more third down stops – to hold down the Temple offense to a crawl.

Both teams have a long way to go, but the Owls – the failed to score more than 14 points in any of the last seven games – have more work to do.

2022 Preseason CFN American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year

QB Clayton Tune, Sr. Houston

Can Tune be for Houston what Desmond Ridder was for Cincinnati last year? The numbers should be strong – SMU QB Tanner Mordecai might have the better passing season, though – but it’s more than that. Tune is the veteran leader on what should be the best team in the American Athletic Conference – and the stats aren’t bad, either.

He hit 68% of his passes for 3,546 yards and 30 touchdowns and ten picks, ran for 154 yards and two touchdowns, and led the way to a terrific 12-win season with a bowl victory. Now Houston is looking for even more.

2022 Preseason CFN American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year

LB Deshawn Pace, Jr. Cincinnati

Call this a projection that Pace takes his game up a few notches and becomes an even bigger terror for offenses.

An underappreciated all-around hybrid linebacker – he only earned Honorable Mention All-AAC honors last year – the 6-2, 215-pounder was all over the field making 95 tackles with 9.5 tackles for loss and four picks, highlighted by a huge one against Indiana. It’s not really his role, but if he becomes more of a pass rusher, he’ll be a gamewrecker.

American Athletic Conference Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

American Athletic Conference predictions for every team and every game in the 2022 college football season

The American Athletic Conference is about to go through its final season with a whole lot of fun before all the changes come.

If you want wacky, and if you want unpredictable, here you go.

The future Big 12 programs – Cincinnati, Houston, and UCF – should be the stars, but others are going to be just good enough to provide a push or even trip them up. Unfortunately, the Cougars don’t play the Bearcats or Knights.

Get ready for the inconsistencies with teams like East Carolina and Memphis being up and down, depending on the timing of the biggest games, SMU and Tulane will be interesting, and USF and Navy should be just improved enough to pull off a few interesting performances.

Remember, the American Athletic Conference doesn’t have divisions. The top two teams in the final standings will play for the title. It should come down to the last few games with the drama at a high level up until the very end.

Temple Owls Preview 2022

It wasn’t all that long ago that Temple appeared to be a steady, winning program that was allowed to assume good records and bowl appearances.

But last year the team couldn’t score in the 3-9 season, and before that was an ugly 1-6 2020 without much of anything going right.

Rod Carey was a strong head coach at Northern Illinois, but he struggled in his three years. Before him, Geoff Collins had a winning record before going to Georgia Tech, Matt Rhule went 28-23 before going on to Baylor and then the Carolina Panthers, Steve Addazio had a winning record, and Al Golden turned around the impossible program before going off to Miami.

Now it’s Stan Drayton’s turn.

The first time head coach has been a whale of a running back coach at several levels over the years, and now he’s getting his shot to take the Temple program and shape it how he wants to.

It’s not going to be easy. He has to get the lines in place, but the skill parts are solid, he’ll make the running game great, and there aren’t any expectations for now.

But it really is possible to win at Temple. Drayton might just need a year or so to do it.

Temple Owls Preview 2022: Offense

The new coaching staff has to find something it can rely on. The Owls were 125th in the nation in total offense last year, couldn’t run, had no downfield passing game, and it failed to score more than 14 points in nine games and in any of the last seven games. On the plus side, there’s experience, and there are some new options to change things up fast.

Head coach Stan Drayton knows how to coach up running backs. That’s how he made his name as an NFL assistant, and making the ground game go will be Job One.

Sophomore Edward Haydee led the team with just 330 yards and three touchdowns last year – averaging under four yards per carry, but he’ll be fine with room to move. Darvon Hubbard is coming in from Texas A&M and Jakari Norwood is moving in from Illinois as part of a rotation.

The line has to be better at keeping defenses out of the backfield. Three starters are expected back, Peace Addo from Duke and James Faminu from Houston will push for time, and there’s enough size to blast away a bit.

Can the quarterback situation be settled fast? Former Georgia transfer D’Wan Mathis has a whole lot of talent, but he needs the line to give him time to work after an injury-plagued – but promising – season. Quincy Patterson is coming in from Virginia Tech to add another option to the mix.

The receiving corps should be a plus. Leading receivers Randle Jones and Jaden Blue are done, but Jose Barbon was second with 39 catches with 431 yards and two scores, and Amad Anderson added 24 grabs. This is one of the team’s deeper areas, helped by getting Ian Stewart from Michigan State.

Temple Owls Preview 2022: Defense

The defensive side has more ready-to-roll parts than the offensive side. Last year’s D fought the good fight. It didn’t generate a pass rush, but it was great at coming up with tackles for loss and ended up fifth in the nation in pass defense. The run defense had problems, but as long as the secondary can hold up again, the D will be okay.

Leading tacklers Amir Tyler is done at safety, but Alex Odom is a good-sized hitter who was second with 65 tackles, and there’s good depth to play around with at the position.

There weren’t a whole lot of picks, but the corner combination of Keyshawn Paul, Cameron Ruiz, and Elijah Clark has size and can hold up. South Carolina transfer Dominick Hill will be an instant factor.

The front three will be active. 285-pound Darian Varner was second on the team with seven tackles for loss, Zach Gill is a 295-pounder, and 300-pound Demerick Morris is one of the team’s bigger bodies inside. Now the front has to get to the quarterback.

Jordan Magee is one of the better pass rushers and top tacklers at one outside linebacker spot, Kobe Wilson is a quick 215-pound hitter in the middle, and there are enough options and help from the transfer portal – Jacob Hollins is a promising backup from Fresno State and Illinois before that – to form a solid corps.

Cincinnati, UCF, Houston. All three are good enough to be considered the top team in the league coming into 2022, but there’s improvement among several other teams who’ll put up a fight.

The rankings are based on how good the teams should be and not the final projected records. Keeping in mind that this all could/might/will change when we make the final calls in August …

Houston vs Temple Game Preview

Why Temple Will Win

The Owls are making a late run with a desperate hope of getting on the bubble – they need this.

They’ve won three of their last four games because of their solid defense that’s allowing under 40% from the field. They’re great at guarding the three, rebounds aren’t a problem, and no on win the AAC takes more free throws.

Houston might have won the first meeting, but the offense struggled in the 66-61 fight. Temple allowed just 4-of-22 from three and stayed in the game late, but …

Why Houston Will Win

Temple can’t shoot. Actually, Temple can shoot, but it doesn’t make enough baskets.

It’s a brutal struggle for the Owls to get to 70 points with the inability to do much from three. Throw in the problems on the free throw line – they take them, but they don’t make them – and it shouldn’t take much of a scoring push to get by.

The Cougars are on a nice five game winning streak with the defense ramping up the intensity over the last three games, so …

What’s Going To Happen

Expect the Cougars to lock this down fast.

Temple’s defense is just good enough to keep this from getting out of hand, but Houston can win the AAC regular season title outright and can take the Memphis game off.

Threes have been a problem for Houston, but it’ll get to the line plenty of times and keep pulling away from the free throw line.

Navy vs Temple Game Preview

Why Navy Will Win

It’s been a rough and disappointing season for the Midshipmen, but this is where they should finally get to have a little fun before getting ready for the Army game a few weeks later.

The running game hasn’t been dominant like it needs to be, but it rolled East Carolina for 345 yards in the 38-35 battle and hit the 300-yard mark in the stunning win at Tulsa three weeks ago.

Temple doesn’t score.

It can’t move the chains, it doesn’t control the clock, and it hasn’t scored more than ten points since mid-October and hasn’t scored more than 14 in any of the last six games.

But …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Temple Will Win

This will have to be Temple’s bowl game.

The offense fall off the map over the second half of the season in blowout after blowout, but the defense has the ability to get into the backfield and it should be able to hold up reasonably well against the Navy style.

It’s not like the Midshipmen are pushing Georgia for defensive stats. The run D is fine, but the O isn’t getting enough yards – there’s no passing game – and Temple should be able to move the ball better than it has in weeks.

It’ll get to 300 yards for the first time since early October, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Navy will always have the ball.

The running game will grind things down, but that will keep Temple in the game just enough to make this interesting. However, Navy will own the clock in the second half as it keeps the ball for two long marches to put this away.
