All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Iowa State (2-0) vs UNLV (0-2) Game Preview

Why Iowa State Will Win

Iowa State is okay.

Not to be too apologetic, but Northern Iowa is always a tough out to start the season, and Iowa has been razor-sharp defensively from the start.

That’s not to excuse a pathetic performance on a national stage by a team that’s supposed to be among the top ten in the country, but the talent is still there, the experience didn’t go away, and the Big 12 season hasn’t started yet.

This is the reset button that needs to be pushed.

UNLV hasn’t been able to move the chains, it can’t stop teams from going on long marches, and the offensive line has been a disaster in losses to Eastern Washington and Arizona State.

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why UNLV Will Win

So is anything going right?

This continues to be a long, long process under second-year head coach Marcus Arroyo. The offense isn’t turning the ball over in bunches, there haven’t been a slew of silly penalties to make things worse, and there’s a veteran group of skill parts that should be better if they get a little more time to work.

And let’s just say it – Iowa State has been awful on offense.

The Cyclone O can’t move the ball efficiently, the ground game hasn’t gone anywhere in the first two games, and now there are question marks about whether or not QB Brock Purdy might be replaced – he won’t be, by the way.

UNLV has to hope that Iowa State continues to buckle under the pressure of high expectations.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Iowa State is fine. It needs a breather just to get everything right, and this will be the game to do it.

It’ll take a quarter to get everything going, but the Cyclone ground attack will finally start working and the defense – which has been great, but hasn’t been noticed because of the problems on the other side – will keep the issues going for the Rebel attack.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Arizona State (2-0) vs BYU (2-0) Game Preview

Why Arizona State Will Win

The team has gone through its warm-ups, and now it’s time to start the season.

Southern Utah and UNLV were but mere blips along the way to get ready for this, and then the Pac-12 season to kick in.

QB Jayden Daniels has been sharp – even if the franchise QB is running a bit much, taking off for 125 yards in the 37-10 win over UNLV – the ground game is working, and moving the chains hasn’t been any sort of a problem.

Again, it’s not like the competition has been anything to get fired up about, but the defense has been great, the pass rush is there, and again, the two games were good to get all the parts up to speed.

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why BYU Will Win

No, this might not be the BYU of last year – not having the current New York Jet starting quarterback is a part of that – but if you’re beating a Utah team that’s good enough to win the Pac-12 South, you’re doing something right.

Give the Cougars credit. If the beef against the 2020 version was that they didn’t play any Power Five programs – certainly not their fault – then starting 2-0 against the Pac-12 with wins over Arizona and Utah matters.

The offense didn’t turn the ball over against Utah and did a terrific job of controlling the clock against a team that’s normally wonderful at dominating the tempo.

No one is supposed to be able to run against this Ute defensive front, and BYU averaged five yards per carry and took all the pressure off of QB Jaren Hall.

Keep control of the game, force Arizona State and Daniels to start pushing the ball down the field more, and don’t make mistakes. Do that, and BYU has this. And …

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Playing in Provo matters.

The home field advantage wasn’t a big deal for the program for a few years against the stronger teams, but everything has turned lately with that Utah game proving it.

BYU will play a tight game without screwing up, Arizona State will have to deal with a dangerous pass rush, and it’ll do a strong job of owning the time of possession battle against a team that’s been brilliant at that.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Oklahoma State (2-0) vs Boise State (1-1) Game Preview

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

The Cowboys are surviving and advancing.

It’s been a rough two games so far with tight battles against Southwest Missouri State and Tulsa, but it’s been a bit of a rebuilding job with the coaching staff, and QB Spencer Sanders was out early on.

That’s why you have the soft openings – the hope is to be ready for a game like this.

The defense has been able to make up for the offensive problems with a good pass rush and enough stops to keep the team in games.

It’s been a high-wire act, but the O proved it could explode – coming up with a 21-point fourth quarter comeback to get by Tulsa 28-23 – and now the attack gets a Boise State defense that’s struggling to get off the field – at least it did against UCF – and …

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Boise State Will Win

The Broncos bounced back just fine.

They had to deal with a tough battle in Orlando against the Knights, and they returned roaring in a blowout win over UTEP even though the ground game wasn’t working all that well.

This isn’t quite the offensive machine it should be under new head coach Andy Avalos, but the explosion was there last week in the passing game and the team took its foot off the gas after getting up 41-13 at halftime.

Oklahoma State just can’t get the rushing attack going. There are too many penalties, the turnovers have been a problem, and overall, the team isn’t playing well. Now it has to go on the road to a tough environment against a fired up team looking to make a statement.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Is this where Oklahoma State flips the switch?

There’s experience and talent there to be a whole lot better, but the team just isn’t playing well – especially offensively. But Boise State isn’t running well, either.

The difference will be the mistakes.

Oklahoma State will be -2 in turnover margin against a Boise State D that leads the nation with 11 takeaways in two games. No, Avalos’s team might not be doing enough offensively, but it’s attacking well enough on the defensive side to get out of this with a nice national win.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Texas (1-1) vs Rice (0-2) Game Preview

Why Rice Will Win

Rice hasn’t been able to get the offense going, and there hasn’t been much fun in losses to Arkansas and Houston, but it really is a decent team that should be far more dangerous as the season goes on.

It also helps to be catching Texas before the Big 12 season starts.

Yeah, the Longhorns will be fired up after getting whacked by Arkansas, but the game exposed a slew of issues. The run defense struggled to come up with a big stop, the offense was inconsistent, and Rice somehow has to run the ball and and come up with third down stops to take advantage of both issues.

The pass rush hasn’t been bad, and the pieces are there to start running better and do more to control the clock. Generate pressure, don’t turn the ball over, hope Texas presses and makes mistakes – Rice has to do that, but …

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Texas Will Win

Rice hasn’t had a lick of luck so far offensively.

The ground attack is supposed to be a factor after years of trying to put it all together under head coach Mike Bloomgren, QB Luke McCaffrey threw three picks in last week’s 44-7 loss to Houston, and there isn’t enough happening to move the chains.

Worse yet, the defense isn’t getting off the field. Arkansas and Houston combined to convert 46% of their third down tries, the D isn’t generating enough takeaways to make up for the problems, and the special teams are screwing up, too.

Rice just isn’t tight enough to put together the perfect performance needed to pull this off.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

No, Texas, there’s no need to panic quite yet.

The Arkansas game was a disaster defensively, and it showed how far there is to go to get from good to elite, but there’s enough talent to roll though this and go into the Big 12 season with some momentum.

The quarterback juggling of Casey Thompson and Hudson Card will get all of the attention, but the defense is the real story. It needs to pitch a good game after getting ripped through by the Hogs, and it will.

Rice will continue to have problems moving the ball, it won’t do enough on third downs, and Texas will start to look the part again with ease.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

LSU (1-1) vs Central Michigan (1-1) Game Preview

Why Central Michigan Will Win

The Chippewas have the experience, the coaching, and the upside to win the MAC and be a dangerous out for an LSU that’s still trying to figure it out.

There wasn’t any issue against McNeese with a 34-7 LSU win, but the running game still isn’t rolling – averaging 3.4 yards per carry last week – and it took a wee bit too long to put that away.

Central Michigan has the tough veterans to hold up against the pounding LSU will try to do, and it has the offense to keep things moving. Former Washington QB Jacob Sirmon has been terrific so far – getting more of a warm-up against Robert Morris last week – leading an offense that’s going to keep pressing.

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why LSU Will Win

The Tiger pass rush is going to bother Sirmon.

The Central Michigan offensive front is going to be okay, but LSU is doing a great job of generating pressure. It wasn’t just against McNeese, the D was able to get behind the line against UCLA, too – even though there were problems overall holding up.

This isn’t the powerhouse LSU team it should be considering the talent level in place, but the secondary is still full of NFL starters, Max Johnson is growing into the starting quarterback role, and the lines are too good.

Basically, if LSU plays up to its ability, there isn’t a problem. However …

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Central Michigan is going to provide a push.

Again, this is a good team with enough across the board – and an SEC head coach in Jim McElwain – that isn’t going to beat itself and will be efficient and effective enough to make LSU press.

The Tigers will get this done with a few big home runs, but can the running game get going? Missouri was able to come up with over 200 yards and close to six yards per carry against the Chippewas, and LSU is going to give it a try.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Texas A&M (2-0) vs New Mexico (2-0) Game Preview

Why New Mexico Will Win

The Lobos are on a run.

The program was a disaster with a 5-31 record until early December of last year. Beating Wyoming and Fresno State to close out last year was great, and starting out with wins over Houston Baptist and New Mexico State was nice. It’s the first four-game winning streak for the program since 2004.

So what’s going right? There aren’t a slew of mistakes and turnovers, the run defense has been great, and the team has found a knack to make timely big plays.

Texas A&M, on the other hand, came very, very, very close to losing to Colorado last week – winning 10-7 – when it couldn’t come up with any big plays of its own. Now the offense will be without QB Haynes King after he got hurt, there hasn’t been the same pop overall, and turnovers are a problem with five in two games.

The Lobos need to take advantage of every opportunity.

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Texas A&M Will Win

Yeah, New Mexico is on a four-game winning streak going back to last year, but it gets to deal with an angry team that’s about to try to make a statement after the clunker in Boulder.

The offense might be a bit of a mess – there wasn’t any real running game against Colorado – but the defense has been great so far. It bent a bit against the Buffs, but it only allowed an early touchdown and that was it.

The same thing happened against Kent State, allowing 226 yards on the ground but just one score. The defense will come through when it has to.

The offense isn’t as bad as it looked against Colorado. There are way too many good weapons and playmakers to keep being so inconsistent. However, the quarterback play has to be fine without King.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Former Kentucky QB Terry Wilson has been great so far for New Mexico. He’s been accurate, he’s keeping the chains moving, and he’s not making mistakes.

And now he’ll be swarmed over.

Like Kent State and Colorado, New Mexico will move the ball enough to be a bother, but drive after drive will stall.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Georgia (2-0) vs South Carolina (2-0) Game Preview

Why South Carolina Will Win

Does Georgia have a quarterback?

JT Daniels missed the UAB game with an abdominal core injury, but it didn’t matter. Stetson Bennett stepped in and threw five touchdown passes in the 56-7 win, and … he now has a strained back.

Carson Beck stepped in late and only hit four of his ten passes with a touchdown and a pick.

South Carolina needed to do way too much work to get by East Carolina 20-17, but the defense did a great job against a dangerous offense that was supposed to crank it up through the air with all of its veteran talent. Instead, the Gamecocks allowed just 152 yards through the air and 116 on the ground.

The defense leads the nation in third down stops – giving up just 2 conversions in 24 chances – with a line that was supposed to be one of the big  strengths for the new coaching staff, and it is.

This has to be kept close by the defense because …

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Georgia Will Win

The South Carolina offense might not go anywhere.

The Georgia quarterback situation will figure itself out – Daniels and Bennett are both just healthy enough for one of them to potentially step in and shine – but it’s the D that’s been otherworldly.

Clemson has one of the five best teams in college football, and it managed a grand total of two rushing yards and 180 in all.

UAB is probably going to win the Conference USA title with the best team yet under head coach Bill Clark, and it got absolutely nothing to work with 174 total yards in a 56-7 Dawg win.

South Carolina turned it over three times, could’t move the chains all that well, and needed a late score to push past an East Carolina team with a bad defense.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

No, really, this Georgia defense is just that good.

It’s as if this is too easy, so the Dawgs have banged up quarterbacks and missing receiving weapons just to keep it fair. South Carolina won’t be able to run, QB Zeb Noland will turn it over a few times, and the Georgia offense will capitalize on all of its chances.

Auburn (2-0) vs Penn State (2-0) Game Preview

Why Auburn Will Win

Let’s not put Auburn in the national championship quite yet after beating Akron and Alabama State by a combined score of 122 to 10, but for a rebuilding team under a new coaching staff, that’s exactly what needed to happen.

Bo Nix has been brilliant – again, Akron and Alabama State, though – hitting 75% of his passes for 383 yards and five scores with no picks. He got the two warm-up games to be ready for this, he’s throwing well, and he’s a veteran who’ll hardly be fazed by playing in Happy Valley.

The offense isn’t exactly supposed to be along for the ride, but the defense looks like it really will be a terror all year. The pass rush has been tremendous against the inferior competition, and there hasn’t been anything happening against the run D so far.

This really is going to be a good group, and Penn State couldn’t get the new-look O going in the win over Wisconsin to start the season, but …

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Penn State Will Win

Ball State is a restaurant quality team that should be in the mix for the MAC title, and the Nittany Lion offense ripped through it without an issue.

The defense isn’t a question mark – Wisconsin couldn’t break through it, and Ball State didn’t get a touchdown until the fourth quarter – but it’s the other side that had to show the pop and explosion.

For all of the problems against the Badgers, a few big downfield pass plays changed the game. Sean Clifford appears to have settled in, the running backs are deep and talented, and the balance should be enough to keep the Tiger defensive front on its heels.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Just how for real is Auburn?

The two layup games showed nothing other than it’s Auburn, and it had easy opponents that barely provided a live scrimmage.

On Saturday night in Beaver Stadium, the crowd will be insane, the Penn State defense will feed off it – it doesn’t need any more juice – and the Auburn running game will have a hard time getting going.

But it’ll be close.

Just as it seems like Penn State is about to take over, Nix will lead the way on a good scoring drive. The Nittany Lions will hold late, but there will be a whole lot of sweating.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Arkansas (2-0) vs Georgia Southern (1-1) Game Preview

Why Georgia Southern Will Win

The Hogs are coming off the massive win over Texas and have Texas A&M coming up next. The last thing any coaching staff wants to deal with is the curveball of an option running team when focus is going to be a problem.

Can the running game still work? It’s missing the guys under center over the last few years who could’ve been around to make it go – transfers and other issues are a problem – but this thing can still work.

Arkansas isn’t getting much out of its passing attack yet, and it’s not controlling the clock as well as it should, but …

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Arkansas Will Win

The Hogs are running better than Georgia Southern. If the Eagles aren’t rumbling and rolling with at least 300 yards on the ground, they don’t have any prayer of making this interesting.

Running for 245 yards against Rice was nice, but the 333 yards against Texas was a program-changer. Georgia Southern doesn’t have the run defense to hold up, but this is the game to test out the passing attack to see if it works.

Florida Atlantic’s Nick Tronti hit Georgia Southern for 332 yards and four scores with a whole slew of big plays. Arkansas knows it can run, and KJ Jefferson has thrown well so far – now he needs to do it more.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Arkansas will keep the momentum going by outrunning a Georgia Southern team that isn’t going to get the O going.

The veteran Hog linebackers have been tremendous so far. Two teams that wanted to run to win – Rice and Texas – couldn’t bust out any yards in chunks. Georgia Southern won’t, either.

Ohio State (1-1) vs Tulsa (0-2) Game Preview

Why Tulsa Will Win

The Golden Hurricane might have had a rough start with a puzzling loss to UC Davis followed up by a defeat to Oklahoma State, but they were both close.

Granted, the margin for error with this program is slim – last year’s team managed to make the big plays needed at the right time – but it’s been in both games late.

Tulsa could very easily be 2-0 right now.

Ohio State has far more firepower – obviously – but Tulsa has to take advantage of a defensive front that’s not getting into the backfield, rely on the solid offensive line, and start pounding away form the start.

QB Davis Brin has to be brilliant and mistake-free, the Golden Hurricane have to be a brick wall against the run like it was against the Oklahoma State running backs, and …

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Ohio State Will Win

Ohio State should be able to hit a few home runs. Do that, and Tulsa can’t answer.

While the Buckeyes are in meltdown mode after the loss to Oregon, the offense is still great – CJ Stroud threw for 484 yards against the Ducks – and there aren’t any answers in the Golden Hurricane for all of the weapons.

The Tulsa offense isn’t moving the chains, the defense has been awful on third downs, and there are too many other parts that aren’t working with way, way too many mistakes.

Just assume Tulsa will get hit for at least eight penalties.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Ohio State is on the worst three-game run of points allowed in the school’s history. The D is about to come out roaring.

Tulsa doesn’t have the offensive pop to take advantage of the reeling Buckeye defensive front, and it doesn’t control the clock well enough to take over the game.

Get ready for one angry Ohio State team to press early and try to beat Oregon – and Tulsa will simply be in the way.
