All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Alabama (2-0) vs Florida (2-0) Game Preview

Why Alabama Will Win

For all of the great things Florida has done so far in blowout wins over Florida Atlantic and USF, it’s still a rebuilding team.

The  offense has been able to move, but it hasn’t been razor-sharp so far even with all of the production.

The running game might be amazing – it’s No. 2 in the nation early on – but the passing attack is still coming into place. The interceptions have to stop – four so far – and there can’t be any more misfires in the red zone.

Swarm around the Gator quarterbacks and keep them from taking off, and you stop the offense – for now.

On the flip side, Bryce Young has been nothing short of perfect throwing the ball.

There might be a few missed reads here and there, and he’s not adding anything to the running game, but considering he’s a young player being thrown into one of the most pressure-packed positions in all of football, 71% for 571 yards and seven touchdowns and no picks is pretty good.

Yeah, there are a few problems for a team that’s been all but handed the national championship already, but they’re mostly the cute kind, like too many penalties and a lack of overall consistency.

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Florida Will Win

It’s Alabama. It’s obviously amazing, and it obviously has a ton of talent ready to go off to the next level, but are you really so sure that this is a be-all-end-all No. 1 team just because it blasted an – we’re adults here; we can say it – overloved Miami team and Mercer?

Nick Saban is wee bit right with his rants about how his team smells – at least by the unfairly high standards of Alabama and how the world perceives this team.

There really are too many penalties, a few too many plays are being allowed in the backfield, and the running game has been a giant bag of whatever.

Yes, stop Florida QBs Emory Jones and Anthony Richardson from getting into space, and there’s a problem here, but it doesn’t help the cause to be without NFL LB Christopher Allen – to what appears to be a season-ending foot injury – and with next-level hybrid pass rusher Will Anderson hobbling with a knee problem.

The Gators should be able to turn the pass rush loose on Young, there really should be explosion from the running game, and this might just be the moment when Jones rises up and rocks on the national stage.

However …

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

We’re not lucky enough to get a repeat of the thrilling 52-46 Alabama SEC Championship win over the Gators.

These are two almost completely different teams – at least at the offensive skill spots – from December, but there are still too many soft spots for Florida to pull this off.

The defense hasn’t been good enough on third downs. the passing game isn’t hitting enough throws, and the secondary that melted down in 2020 is too shaky.

That doesn’t mean this won’t be fun.

Florida will hang around – the running game will work – and the defense will take its game to another level of energy in the super-charged environment, but Young and the passing attack will hit the big plays that Jones and his guys won’t.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

USC (1-1) vs Washington State (1-1) Game Preview

Why USC Will Win

The talent is there – it’s just not playing well.

There’s never a good time to fire a head coach who needs to go, but two games into a season certainly doesn’t do much for a team trying to figure it all out on the fly.

It wasn’t just one bad day against Stanford that launched Clay Helton – it was the direction of the program all while UCLA appears to be ascending. There’s enough in place to turn this around fast, though, and now the pressure is essentially off.  There won’t be a weekly Helton On The Hot Seat thing.

It’ll be up to new interim head man Donte Williams to take a team full of good players and making it all work, and it starts with the passing game going off.

Kedon Slovis hasn’t been bad, and this week he should throw at will against a Washington State defense that doesn’t have a pass rush and struggled in its first two games. Once the O gets going, everything else should fall into place.

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Washington State Will Win

So what’s really the problem at USC?

It was able to get by San Jose State with relative ease, and chalk up the Stanford game to a bad day. However, there hasn’t been anything from the defensive line so far – it’s not getting behind the line – and there are WAY too many penalties and mistakes so far.

Wazzu has a similar problem to USC’s – the talent in place isn’t producing yet.

Turnovers aren’t an issue, and the parts are there to start doing a whole lot more to keep the chains moving, and again, USC probably won’t bring the pressure.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

USC is okay.

Washington State lost to Utah State and wasn’t great against Portland State, but the Pac-12 season starts now and there couldn’t be a better time to try pulling this off.

Instead of melting down, watch out for the Trojans to start playing looser and better. The defense will be okay, but it’s the offensive side that will quickly take over with a huge day from the passing attack.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Notre Dame (2-0) vs Purdue (2-0) Game Preview

Why Purdue Will Win

Notre Dame can’t seem to put together a full 60 minutes.

The running game has sputtered, but the passing attack has been good enough to survive. The defensive front is living in the opposing backfield, but the run D is getting ripped to shreds.

To put it another way, it took overtime to beat the team that just lost to an FCS squad, and it took WAY too much work to get by a MAC team. Toledo is good, but it’s still a MAC program, and it took a last minute score to get out with a 32-29 win.

Purdue rolling though UConn was no big deal, but it was strong against a decent Oregon State. The offense has been careful with the ball and great at controlling the tempo, and there haven’t been a slew of big mistakes to give anyone a break.

However …

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Notre Dame Will Win

Here comes the Notre Dame passing game.

Silver lining time. The Irish might have been underwhelming so far, but Jack Coan has been better than anyone could’ve possibly expected. He hit 69% of his throws so far for over 600 yards with six touchdowns and two picks, and he’s proving he can carry the team though adversity.

The biggest issue has been a run defense that might come up with a slew of tackles for loss, but allows over five yards per carry. It’s not that Purdue can’t take advantage of the wobbly run D; it’s that the O just doesn’t roll that way.

Want to make this about the passing attack? Coan and his targets can keep up.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Just how good is Purdue?

Can the offense close the deal that Florida State and Toledo couldn’t? QB Jack Plummer has been outstanding and the offense has been working, but the Irish might have finally fought through their issues with the first two games – at least that’s their hope.

Purdue will be up, Coan will bring the Irish back, and it’ll be a third straight very dramatic – and very rocky – win. The Notre Dame defensive front will generate the pressure when it has to.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Minnesota (1-1) vs Colorado (1-1) Game Preview

Why Minnesota Will Win

The Gophers have been outstanding on third downs.

They control the clock – holding the ball for close to 36 minutes a game so far – and they put themselves in good positions to manage their third down tries.

There might have been a struggle in the second half in the 31-26 win against Miami University last week, but they were able to go on a big late scoring drive and force a big turnover to survive. For the most part, though, they need a big drive, they get it.

On the other side, Colorado doesn’t have an efficient enough passing game to do a whole lot of damage, and the offense has struggled to get going, but …

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Colorado Will Win

It’s one thing to have offensive problems against Texas A&M – that’s a top five-caliber team with a defense full of NFL guys. Minnesota could’t get to 300 yards last week against Miami University.

The Gopher offense might be amazing on third downs, but the defense is having issues coming up with stops – Miami’s third down conversions were timely.

There’s nothing happening from the defensive front to get into the backfield with just five tackles for loss and no sacks so far. Colorado can be fine if QB Brendon Lewis isn’t under pressure.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Minnesota will still be able to run the ball.

Losing star Mohamed Ibrahim for the season was a huge blow, but Treyson Potts was able to handle the work, running 34 times for 178 yards and two scores against Miami University. He’s not going to have enough room to move this week.

Don’t expect a whole lot of points. Both defenses will hold up well, neither side will generate enough big plays down the field to open it up, and it’ll be like pulling teeth at times to get points on the board.

At home, Colorado’s defensive front will do just enough to get out on the right side of a close game after just missing on a massive upset over Texas A&M.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Virginia Tech (2-0) vs West Virginia (1-1) Game Preview

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

Virginia Tech rolled through its first two games – sort of.

The defense rose up and stuffed North Carolina, and it kept rocking against the run in a 35-14 win over Middle Tennessee last week. The offense lost TE James Mitchell for the season, but QB Braxton Burmeister has been terrific, the running game is playing well, and the pass rush has been outstanding.

This might not be a high-octane offensive team full of firepower, but West Virginia isn’t going to take this a shootout. The 2021 Hokies seem to be just fine grinding away.

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why West Virginia Will Win

The Mountaineer defense has been terrific over the last six quarters. Playing Long Island University was a part of it, but it rose up to keep the team in the game in the loss to Maryland.

The run D is strong thanks to a whole lot of tackles for loss coming from several parts. Again, Virginia Tech doesn’t have a big-time O, and now the offensive front will be under more pressure than it was any time in the first two games.

The Hokies will have to push to get to 400 yards of total offense, the downfield plays haven’t shown up quite yet, and they have yet to have to make any sort of a decent comeback.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Who’ll turn the ball over? That’s going to be everything in this.

West Virginia hung with Maryland in the opener, but four giveaways were a killer in the loss.

Virginia Tech will be +2 in turnover margin, the run defense will keep the Mountaineers from controlling the clock, and the extra mistakes from the other side will be the difference in a bit of a defensive battle.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Michigan (2-0) vs Northern Illinois (1-1) Game Preview

Why Northern Illinois Will Win

The offense is working.

After a rough few years and a bad start to the Thomas Hammock era, the Huskies got by Georgia Tech on the road to start the season, and kept up in a wild 50-43 loss to Wyoming last week.

The O is hitting on third down tries, the offensive line is playing better than it has in a few years, and there’s a rushing attack now.

It also helps to have a Big Ten quarterback under center. Former Michigan State starter Rocky Lombardi has brought a passing game to the mix. He knows Michigan, throwing for 323 yards and three touchdowns in last year’s win for the Spartans.

However …

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Michigan Will Win

Rocky Lombardi throws picks.

He was terrific against the Wolverines last season, but he threw nine picks in six games. He kept everything in check against the Yellow Jackets and kept things moving, and …

He threw three interceptions against Wyoming.

Michigan has been fantastic in the first two games. The rushing attack is rolling, the defensive front is solid, and the O has a quarterback in Cade McNamara to build around.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Northern Illinois is just plucky enough to be annoying.

The offense is good enough to go on a few scoring drives, but the mistakes will come.

Michigan is playing with confidence, efficiency, and with the lines taking over games. It’ll take a quarter to wake up and get going, and then the scoring avalanche will come.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Michigan State (2-0) vs Miami (1-1) Game Preview

Why Michigan State Will Win

Miami needs its defensive front to dominate to have any sort of a chance in this, but the Spartans have been brilliant so far on the lines.

The offensive front isn’t allowing much pressure in the backfield, the ground game has been rolling with 300 yards per game, and there weren’t any blips against Northwestern and Youngstown State.

RB Kenneth Walker dominated Northwestern, and he wasn’t needed much last week – he should be rested and ready to go. QB Payton Thorne was wonderful last week with the big plays kicking in, and he’ll press a Hurricane secondary that’s been getting bombed on way too easily.

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Miami Will Win

Even with the blowout loss to Alabama – and the tight battle against a good Appalachian State – the Hurricane line is getting into the backfield with a whole lot of tackles for loss.

Yes, the Spartan offensive front has been great, but it also hasn’t been pushed or tested so far. If the Canes can hold on against the run – they haven’t been awful over the first two games – they should be able to make the Spartans press a bit. As good as Thorne has been, he hasn’t needed to make any big key throws yet.

On the other side, for all of the good things Michigan State has done defensively, it’s been lousy on third downs. Miami doesn’t care about the time of possession battle, but this might be the game to control the tempo and clock.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Miami is overdue to start playing a whole lot better, but it’s hard to do anything big against Alabama and an Appalachian State team that might be the best in the Sun Belt.

Michigan State is the real deal, but it’s going to be pressed far more than it was against Northwestern. Miami’s defensive front will keep the team in the game, but there won’t be enough consistency to the offense and the secondary will give up two big plays to kill a few momentum swings.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Maryland (2-0) vs Illinois (1-2) Game Preview

Why Illinois Will Win

The Illini have struggled over the last two weeks with a loss to UTSA and a 42-14 rocking from Virginia, but things haven’t totally fallen off the map.

Former Rutgers QB Artur Sitkowski stepped in for an injured Brandon Peters and has been fine. The downfield plays aren’t there, but he’s been good enough to get the job done if the rest of the parts are working.

Maryland had problems with the West Virginia passing game in the 30-24 win in the opener, and it hasn’t been pushed yet on the ground. Illinois will come out and try to bully the Terp defensive front, but …

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Maryland Will Win

The Illinois running has been serviceable. It hasn’t taken over games, and it’s only averaging four yards per carry – it’s not going to be a problem for a Terp defensive front that allowed 114 yards in the first two games.

The bigger issue for the Illini is a secondary that’s getting roasted. It had way too many breakdowns in the opener against Nebraska, and last week Virginia’s Brennan Armstrong threw for over 400 yards and five scores.

Taulia Tagovailoa has been fantastic so far. He hit 76% of his throws in the first two games for 606 yards and six scores with no picks. The downfield plays are there, the ground attack is working just fine, and …

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Now Maryland has to prove it can win on the road.

Illinois will try to turn its season around by being 2-0 in the Big Ten, but the Terps have way too much offensive pop against a secondary that’s having way too many issues and breakdowns.

Maryland won’t be perfect – and Illinois will have its moments and chances to take over – but it’ll have more offensive balance in the fourth quarter to get to 3-0.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Cincinnati (2-0) vs Indiana (1-1) Game Preview

Why Cincinnati Will Win

It’s the first of two big moments for the Cincinnati season – at least outside of the American Athletic Conference schedule. Beat Indiana this week, beat Notre Dame two weeks later, and all of a sudden the College Football Playoff dreams start to become real.

UCF isn’t going to be easy, and four of the last six games are on the road, but this is when it really matters. All around the football side of things on the field is the big news of the program moving to the Big 12 in 2024, head coach Luke Fickell possibly being in the mix for the USC job, and …

Beating Indiana is a big enough task. But the Bearcats appear to be ready.

Cincinnati has only dealt with Miami University and Murray State so far, but it’s done exactly what a top team is supposed to against vastly inferior teams – it has crushed them.

The passing game has been close to flawless, the defense hasn’t had a blip of an issue, and everything looks close to tuned up.

Meanwhile, the Indiana passing game has been awful. The ground game has been decent – scoring wasn’t a problem last week in the 56-14 win over Idaho – but this hasn’t been anything like the team of last year. However …

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Indiana Will Win

Cincinnati has to play a real team now.

The Bearcats might have looked great – give some credit to beating a Miami University team that pushed Minnesota a bit – but now they have to go on the road to deal with an IU team looking to kickstart its season.

Rolling Idaho was nice, but beat Cincinnati, and the respect will return.

The Hoosiers haven’t been perfect, but the running game working last week is a big deal after struggling so much in 2020. QB Michael Penix Jr. hasn’t been great, but he’s got two games in coming off a knee injury. Now it’s time to turn it loose.

The one loss was to an Iowa team that’s playing at an unreal level over the first two games, and last week the Hoosiers looked great as they started to play like they’re supposed to. The talent is there, the defense is in place, and the lines are good enough to hold up.

However …

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Indiana’s passing game hasn’t clicked yet.

It didn’t need to do much of anything against Idaho – again, that was about establishing a running game that’s been missing – but Penix was awful against Iowa and didn’t do much of anything last week.

Cincinnati will get off to a good start and take over on the lines from there. IU will have a few strong moments, but the Bearcats will be relentless with good offensive balance and a big day defensively from the secondary.

This might not be the game that makes everyone think the Bearcats are ready to take on Alabama in the College Football Playoff, but it’ll be a very big step.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Oklahoma (2-0) vs Nebraska (2-1) Game Preview

Why Nebraska Will Win

The Huskers have turned it back around.

They looked they needed a few tune-ups to start the season as they stumbled their way through a Week 1 loss to Illinois. Beating Fordham and Buffalo doesn’t change anything if they can’t roasted by Oklahoma and Michigan State on the road over the next two weeks, but there are improvements.

QB Adrian Martinez has been sharper, the defense has held up, and the lines have played far better than they did against the Illini.

The plays in the backfield are coming – they have to pressure Spencer Rattler from the start – and the downfield plays are hitting averaging more than 16 yards per throw.

Oklahoma wasn’t tested against Western Carolina, but Tulane was able to get the O moving late in the comeback effort in a 40-35 loss. Martinez and the Husker attack will keep things moving.

Why Oklahoma Will Win

The offense is humming.

It took its foot off the gas against Tulane, but Rattler has been every bit the passer he was supposed to be with his loaded receiving corps to work with, the downfield passing game is working, and best of all so far, the mistakes haven’t been costly – yet.

The four turnovers in two games are too many, but the defense has made up for it with three takeaways in each of the first two games.

Yes, Nebraska is playing better than it did in the opener, but it’s still getting hit with way too many penalties, the defense isn’t great on third downs. and while there are plays in the backfield against the run, there aren’t enough sacks.

Give Rattler time, and there’s a problem.

What’s Going To Happen

This is the big moment for Scott Frost and Nebraska.

A mediocre run so far – to be kind – can take an instant turn up with a shocking win on the road in in what used to be the biggest of big powerhouse rivalry games.

The two haven’t met since Oklahoma beat Nebraska in the 2010 Big 12 Championship, but this matchup used to stop the sports world. To a whole slew of fans of a certain age, this is supposed to matter, but it only will if the Huskers really can play up to what the program should be.

The problem is that Nebraska will be good in this, and it won’t be enough.

The energy will be there, but Rattler and the OU offense will get off to a good start, go into a bit of a lull, and will pick it back up to pull away in the fourth quarter as the Husker mistakes start to pile up.
