Villanova (17-5) vs. Seton Hall (17-5) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Villanova Will Win

Seton Hall has won 11 of its last 12 games, dropping the date to Xavier at home a week ago. How did the Musketeers get it done?

Rebounds. Seton Hall got destroyed on the boards and were blown out. Overall, it’s a great rebounding team with a strong inside presence, but the Wildcats should be able to shoot their way over the D, and they should be able to hold their own on the boards.

They might be having a few issues over the last two weeks, but they don’t turn the ball over and they’re as good as any team in the country from the outside. If they get hot, Seton Hall won’t be able to keep up.

[lawrence-related id=507534]

Why Seton Hall Will Win

29%. That’s what teams are shooting from three against the Seton Hall defense. It’s able to attack from the perimeter and force offenses to go inside, and then come the blocks.

The Pirates are second in the nation in blocked shots per game, and that goes along with their ability to hold up against the teams that bomb away.

Yes, Villanova is great at firing away, but Seton Hall has an explosive enough offense to go in streaks, even if it’s not coming from the outside.

What’s Going To Happen

Seton Hall might be playing a whole lot better than Villanova right now, but this is where everything starts to shift around.

The Pirates might have the defense to keep this close and make this a battle, but they’re not going to hit better than 50% from the field like Creighton and Butler did in their wins over Villanova.

It’ll be a fun, entertaining game, but the Wildcats aren’t losing three in a row.

West Virginia (18-4) vs. Oklahoma (14-8) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why West Virginia Will Win

Rebounds. West Virginia can go get them, and Oklahoma can’t.

The Mountaineers are decent from the field, and they can’t shoot from the outside, but they dominate on the offensive boards and clean up a whole lot of messes. On the flip side, the Sooners are okay on the boards, but they’re dead last in the Big 12 in offensive rebounds.

For a team that struggles to score at times – it hasn’t hit 70 points in six of its last eight games – OU will have a whole slew of problems against this WVU D that doesn’t quit.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Oklahoma Will Win

If you believe in patterns, this is Sooners’ game.

They’ve followed up a loss with a win over the last seven games, and they’re due for a win again, partly because they’re at home. They’ve lost their last four games on the road, and won seven of the last eight at home – only losing to Kansas.

On the flip side, the Mountaineers have lost three of their last four road games. If the OU defense can hold its own on the defensive boards, and the offense can get up early and make WVU need to hit from the outside, it’ll keep the game at its tempo.

What’s Going To Happen

Being at home will mean everything for the Sooners.

This will be a low-scoring fight with just the right formula for OU to pull this off. West Virginia can’t hit free throws, but it leads the Big 12 in free throws made because it’s always on the line. Oklahoma is second in the nation in fewest personal fouls.

The Sooners will win on the line in the clutch.

Dayton (20-2) vs. Saint Louis (17-6) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Saint Louis Will Win

Rebounds rebounds, rebounds.

It took a three in the final seconds in overtime for the Flyers to get by Saint Louis the first time around. It was so close and such a battle because of what the Billikens did on the boards with 13 more rebounds.

They have the right formula to potentially be able to pull this off. They’re decent from the field, they defense clamps down from three, and the offense makes up for the lack of outside shooting with rebounds, ranking 11th in the nation on the offensive boards.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Dayton Will Win

Get a lead, and this might be over.

Dayton leads the Atlantic-10 from three, helped by moving the ball around well and coming up with that one extra pass to get the right shot. It was down the first time the two met, and it helped that it hit the threes.

St. Louis only connected on two of the six threes it tried, and Dayton kept on firing away hitting nine, including the game-winner.

The Flyers can get back in this if needed. The Billikens can’t.

What’s Going To Happen

St. Louis might have pushed Dayton to the brink back in mid-January, but it’s not going to have it so easy this time around.

The rebounding margin will still be a problem for the Flyers, but they’ll be too good from the field – they lead the nation in field goal percentage – and hit just enough from the outside to make it 12 wins in a row.

Michigan State (16-7) vs. Michigan (13-9) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Michigan State Will Win

Anything interesting happening at Michigan State lately?

The Mark Dantonio retirement helped take the focus off of the basketball team’s two-game losing streak and run of four losses in the last seven games. What’s been going wrong?

The offense has is struggling, the defense isn’t forcing enough mistakes, and the team has been flat. Even so, Michigan can’t rebound with the Spartans and its D forces fewer mistakes than MSU’s.

It’s not like the Wolverines are hot, either, losing six of their last nine games.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Michigan Will Win

Really, what’s been going wrong with Michigan State lately?

It didn’t show up in the first half against a mediocre Wisconsin team, there were way too many turnovers and mistakes in the loss to Penn State, and there were way too many fouls in both losses.

Michigan might have a slew of problems – it’s awful on the free-throw line – but it doesn’t commit a whole lot of fouls. At home, the hope has to be to get the offense going early, generate a slew of easy transition points off of mistakes, and keep on firing from three.

What’s Going To Happen

Michigan State will get its mojo back with its defense.

After two sloppy games and a rough few games, it’ll turn up the intensity, dominate on the boards, and will keep the Wolverines from getting comfortable from the outside.

The Spartans have had a few days off to rest up and hear all the negativity, and now they’ll be fine again.

Miami (11-11) vs. Florida State (19-3) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Miami Will Win

The Hurricanes gave Florida State a run a few weeks ago.

They might be in the midst of a rough run of eight losses in the last ten games, but at least they battled their rival in an overtime loss. It was a loss, but they held up offensively.

To make this a game, they have to own the offensive boards. They’re turning the ball over way too often, and they’re not moving the ball around well, but they have to go against type and attack the glass against an FSU team that doesn’t do well on the boards.

There’s just enough scoring from Chris Lykes and the three guards to keep attacking, but if they’re getting owned on the boards, forget it.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Florida State Will Win

Winning 12 of its last 13 games, FSU is playing well with a nasty defense with the style to make Miami keep screwing up.

Miami turns the ball over way too often and get hit for a whole lot of easy points, and that’s going to happen if the Seminoles start forcing mistakes and keeps blocking shots like hey have all season long.

They lead the ACC in turnover margin thanks to all of the steals. Miami just doesn’t keep the ball moving well enough to overcome its mistakes.

What’s Going To Happen

24 turnovers. That’s what Florida State forced in the first matchup, and they’re what led to the rally needed to pull off the win in Miami.

There won’t be the need to work that hard this time around. The Canes will win on the boards, but they won’t do it enough to overcome a few FSU runs to get ahead and stay there with relative ease.

Kentucky (17-5) vs. Tennessee (13-9) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Kentucky Will Win

Tennessee has been wildly inconsistent, losing three of its last four games with a hit-or-miss offense that hasn’t hit 75 points in any of the last 11 games.

Kentucky might have its problems, but the scoring has been consistent, the offense is scoring in bunches, and the defense has been suffocating against just about anyone who needs to hit from three.

Tennessee might swing the ball around just fine and is great at coming up with the extra pass, but it’s not going to get on the boards in key moments like the Cats will. If the Vols aren’t hitting, they’re going to have a hard time keeping up – hit 75 points or forget it.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Tennessee Will Win

Tennessee really does move the ball around well. No team in the SEC is better at coming up with the extra pass, and it’s not bad when it comes to the mistakes – the turnovers aren’t there.

No, the offense might not have the consistent firepower to get into a shootout, but the defense usually makes up for the problems, especially against teams that have to hit from three. UK doesn’t do much from the outside, and the Vol D has the ability to collapse, block shots, and bring things down to its tempo.

What’s Going To Happen

Tennessee really, really needs this.

On the road for five of its last seven games, it’s finally back at home a Saturday for the first time since mid-Saturday. This might be way too inconsistent of a team, but it has just enough to make this a fight.

However, it doesn’t have the offense. Kentucky won’t go off – it doesn’t do anything from three – but it’ll be able to pull away late after nailing free throw after free throw.

LSU (17-5) vs. Auburn (20-2) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why LSU Will Win

This is one of the few teams that can hang with Auburn on the boards.

The LSU three point defense is just okay, and the outside shooting isn’t necessarily there to get into a shootout if both teams start bombing away, but this is the SEC’s best rebounding team – Auburn isn’t getting the second-chance points it’s used to.

LSU might not be great from three, but the offense can more than keep up. There’s no problems making this a track meet – again, it’s a team built to deal with AU.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Auburn Will Win

Auburn is past the power outage of a few weeks ago.

At home, the offense is able to take things to a whole other level, and it starts with going on runs from three. LSU might be able to score in a variety of way to stay around and make this a fight, but it isn’t going to come up with the big shots from the outside that Auburn can and will.

No, Auburn won’t be able to shut down the LSU offense, but its defense will be stronger when it absolutely has to be, and it’ll force a few more steals and takeaways to do a better job of holding serve.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s the only time these two play in the regular season, and it should be a firefight.

Be shocked if this isn’t wildly entertaining. Both teams will push this well into the 80s, and both will battle hard in what should be a physical game on the boards. However, at home, Auburn’s ability from three and its defense will be just enough to get by.

Kansas (19-3) vs. TCU (13-9) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Kansas Will Win

Kansas is red hot and TCU … isn’t.

The Jayhawks are coming in on a seven-game winning streak and TCU has lost six of its last seven games, mainly because there’s no Horned Frog offensive pop.

TCU is struggling to score when it’s not bombing away from three. For a team that’s having problems manufacturing points, not being able to do anything from the line hurts – TCU doesn’t get to the free-throw line, and it’s not doing anything once it gets there.

The Jayhawk interior presence and the defense is good enough to lock down from three – the perimeter defense is great – to do just enough to keep Desmond Bane and the rest of the guards from getting hot.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why TCU Will Win

The threes have to drop.

TCU leads the Big 12 from three, and it’s going to keep bombing away no matter what. Kansas might be active enough to lock down at times from the outside, but one big run should keep the game alive.

As bad as things have been for the Horned Frogs, they’re not all that bad in the Ed and Rae, winning the previous four home games before the 62-61 loss to Texas.

They move the ball around well, have just enough interior defense to keep Kansas from dominating when its not on the move, and again …

What’s Going To Happen

It all comes down to the threes.

TCU is in a bad matchup. It can’t get on the move against the Jayhawks, and it’ll have a nightmare of a time if this bogs down in any sort of a half-court battle. Kansas will win, but TCU will do just enough at home to keep this from getting too ugly.

The Horned Frog offense will go cold from three just enough to not go on the run needed to turn the season around.

There are still a few storylines in the 2020 recruiting season – like RB Zachary Evans not deciding on a school yet – even though National Signing Day came and went, but for the most part, it’s on to 2021.

Here are five observations and things that matter now that it’s over.

5. National Signing Day is Blockbuster …

And the Early Signing Period is Netflix.

I used to hate National Signing Day.

The lead-up required weeks and weeks of research and discussion and speculation all for one silly day when older men made a really big deal about where a bunch of kids were going to college.

The worst part about it all was the lack of a true payoff. It was all speculation about how good the undeveloped talents could be three or more years – for the most part – after they signed.

NSD took on a life of its own outside of the normal college football world. It became an occasionally creepy time with message board threats, genuine anger, and a whole lot of pressure. It was also a celebration.

And I sort of miss it.

The first Wednesday in February used to be the one big day of the college football offseason.

The NBA has its free agency period and trade deadline, the NFL has its draft, and baseball has its hot stove league. National Signing Day was a chance for college football fans to look ahead to what might be happening with their respective programs, and it was a time to talk college football before settling in for a big snooze over the following six months.

[lawrence-related id=507396]

Now, most top players are all but locked in several months, if not years, in advance. The Early Signing Period in late December is when everyone of note signs on – which totally gets blown off nationally because the bowl season is in full gear – and the transfer portal has become more important than either of the two signing days.

Not all that long ago, National Signing Day was wall-to-wall all-day TV coverage on at least two of the all-sports station. Every major web site treated it like Christmas because of all the page views and traffic, and it was a  major, major thing.

This year? It was an hour-long wrap-up show – if that – on one of the ESPN networks or conference-only channels, because nothing really happened.

Anecdotally, I used to be hit up for at least 15 radio appearances across the country on NSD. This year, I was had the same 15+ requests, but the talk was 95% about Mark Dantonio.

National Signing Day just isn’t a thing anymore. The hype and craziness around recruiting has peaked, and now it’s more business-like and subdued.

It’s just another day in the college football offseason.

However, there are parts of this that really do matter, starting with …

Every Pac-12 Team’s Star Recruit

Arizona

QB Will Plummer, 6-2, 205 – He might not be all that big, but he’s a big-time passer with a live arm and the mobility to be what the Kevin Sumlin offense wants.
Key Schools In The Running: Oklahoma State, Colorado, Oregon State

Arizona State

WR Johnny Wilson, 6-6, 230 – An interesting target with the size to grow into a tight end, and the athleticism to be a matchup nightmare as a wideout. Oregon had him, and the Sun Devils flipped him.
Key Schools In The Running: Oregon, USC, Tennessee

Cal

RB Chris Street, 5-9, 195 – Very, very shifty and fast through the hole, he’s a home-run hitter who can be used as a receiver and have plays designed to get the ball in his hands in a variety of ways.
Key Schools In The Running: Arizona State, Utah, USC

Colorado

RB Ashaad Clayton, 6-0, 200 – Really, really fast with the size to bring a little bit of power, he’s more of a home-run hitter than a workhorse. The New Orleans native isn’t just a track guy playing football, though.
Key Schools In The Running: Florida, LSU, Kansas

Oregon

LB Justin Flowe, 6-3, 225 – And go ahead and add Noah Sewell as the No. 1A star of the Oregon class. Sewell is the big-hitting run-stuffer on the inside, and Flowe is the all-around playmaker on the outside with the hybrid pass-rushing ability to be terror from the start.
Key Schools In The Running: Alabama, Clemson, Georgia

Oregon State

QB Chance Nolan, 6-3, 200 – The JUCO transfer has great size, excellent mobility, and the experience to step in and start right away. However, he has only three years of eligibility.
Key Schools In The Running: Utah, UCLA, Oklahoma State

Stanford

OT Myles Hinton, 6-7, 310 – The son of former NFL star Chris Hinton is going to John Elway’s school – Chris was taken one pick after Elway in the 1983 NFL Draft. Myles is a big-body athlete with the talent and smarts to go along with the frame.
Key Schools In The Running: Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State

UCLA

QB Parker McQuarrie, 6-7, 208 – Is he it? Is he the quarterback who’s going to make the UCLA offense work under Chip Kelly? He’s not a runner, but he’s got the pro-style size and arm.
Key Schools In The Running: Wisconsin, Miami, Minnesota

USC

WR Gary Bryant, 5-11, 165 – A tall, thin target with great hands and the quickness to be used as a runner from time to time. He could be a kick and punt returner if needed, but he’ll mostly be a deep threat receiver.
Key Schools In The Running: Arizona State, Oklahoma, Oregon

Utah

CB Clark Phillips, 5-10, 187 – With a good frame, great quickness, and the ability to attack the ball with the hands to be used as a receiver if needed – he won’t drop picks. After originally choosing Ohio State, Utah plucked him away.
Key Schools In The Running: Ohio State, UCLA, Notre Dame

Washington

DE Sav’ell Smalls, 6-4, 244 – The Huskies landed the superstar. The Washington native has the NFL size to go along with the unstoppable pass rushing ability to instant step in and produce. He’s going to be the main man for the new era of UW football.
Key Schools In The Running: Florida State, Clemson, Georgia

Washington State

QB Jayden De Laura, 6-1, 190 – He signed on when Mike Leach was still the head man, and now the Hawaii native should grow into Nick Rolovich’s quarterback. He might not be all that big, but he’s deadly accurate and can run.
Key Schools In The Running: Ohio State, USC, Hawaii
