Syracuse vs Pitt Game Preview

Why Syracuse Will Win

Pitt isn’t playing well.

Syracuse lost in a tough battle to Clemson and at home to Notre Dame after the banged up team got hurt further, but Pitt has lost three of its last four with the only win over a hapless Virginia Tech.

The Panther offensive line allows way too many plays in the backfield, the passing attack hasn’t been good enough – it hasn’t hit 60% against an FBS program since mid-September – and now it all has to deal with the statistical-best defense in the ACC.

The Orange might be hurting, but they can still get into the backfield and hold up against the good passing teams, but …

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Pitt Will Win

How healthy is Syracuse?

QB Garrett Shrader is a game time decision, the defensive front is beaten up, and it’s not even going to get a whole lot better in the November grind.

The team was able to hold up well against Clemson, but Notre Dame was able to run too easily and hold down the Orange offense from doing much of anything right.

No, Pitt might not be playing all that well, and the Syracuse defense really is okay even with all the bumps and bruises. The Panthers, though, should be able to control the clock, the defensive front continues to be solid at generating pressure, and that might be just enough.

Essentially, Syracuse is playing like it could use a week or two off, and it’s not going to get it. On the other side …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Pitt needs the win.

At Virginia, Duke, and at Miami is what the Panthers have to close, and they should be able to win two of the last three to get bowl eligible. They don’t and won’t want to mess with it.

They’ll start running right away and keep on pounding until Syracuse proves it can hold up. Pitt is 3-0 when running for more than 230 yards, and it won’t get there.

It’s not going to be anything easy, but the Orange will rise up just enough defensively to hold on, the passing attack will work no matter who’s under center, and finally, Sean Tucker and the ground game will get moving.

Notre Dame vs Syracuse Game Preview

Why Notre Dame Will Win

Syracuse is banged up.

The team keeps moving on through the problems with the defensive line becoming way too thin. It showed against Clemson allowing close to 300 rushing yards in the 27-21 loss last week, and now it’s up to Notre Dame to get pounding.

Everything is great for the Irish when the running game works. It might have only been against UNLV, but the 223 yards were a key part of the 44-21 win. The offense ran for 234 against BYU and 287 against North Carolina – both wins.

Penalties have been a problem for the Orange, the running game isn’t getting enough work, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why Syracuse Will Win

The Syracuse defense continues to be amazing.

It might have been run on by Clemson, but the secondary continues to be strong – it hasn’t allowed a touchdown pass in the last three games and Purdue is the only team to throw for more than one touchdown.

Notre Dame’s passing game isn’t clicking. It was accurate and fine for a while, but it stalled against Stanford and sputtered against UNLV – at least with Drew Pyne’s accuracy.

Tbe Orange offense doesn’t have to worry about turnovers – the Irish don’t take the ball away, the attack should be balanced again even if it isn’t explosive, and …

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Ahhhhh, back at home.

Having to play Clemson was a wee part of the issue, but that was only the second road game of the year for Syracuse – the first one against UConn was hardly anything tough.

The Irish are strong on the road, though. They weren’t awful in the season-opening loss to Ohio State, they handed North Carolina their only loss, and they took down North Carolina.

The problem is a running game that won’t be able to do enough against the Syracuse defense, even with the injuries in key spots.

The Orange will do a nice job of owning the clock, and again, they’re returning to their familiar surroundings for their sixth home date of the season.

Syracuse vs Clemson Game Preview

Why Syracuse Will Win

The Orange defense has been fantastic.

The offense is balanced, there’s more of a passing game this season, and the versatility is allowing the team to make adjustments last year’s team couldn’t. But it’s the other side of the ball that’s coming through to get to 6-0.

Syracuse leads the ACC in total D, it’s not allowing much of anything on the ground – no one has been able to hit 150 yards – and after a bit of a rough start, the secondary has tightened up in a big way against the short-to-midrange passes.

On the other side, Clemson might be playing well, but it faced one team so far that can run well. Florida State came up with 206 yards on the ground last week – the most anyone gained against the Tigers so far – and now it’s time to pound a bit. Sean Tucker hasn’t needed to be a workhorse yet, but this is the game to keep feeding him the ball.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Clemson Will Win

Welcome to a real road game, Syracuse.

It’s going to be October 22nd, we’re past the midway point in the season, and the Orange have gone on the road just once so far. Going to Death Valley is a wee bit different than traveling to UConn.

No, Clemson hasn’t faced a slew of killers on the ground so far, but Syracuse really hasn’t had to deal with anyone pounding away. The defensive front has been great, and Clemson isn’t going to tear off 200 yards, but averaging five yards per carry like Virginia did should get the job done.

And about the idea of Tucker and the Orange pounding away, good luck. The Clemson defensive front showed it could be run on last week against Florida State, but it was able to hold up when it had to – it was 34-14 before FSU came up with two late touchdowns.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Clemson continues to be challenged, and it continues to come through.

The running game has been good, DJ Uiagalelei has been great – 12 touchdown passes in the last four games – and it should all click just enough to go along with a terrific day from the defense.

Syracuse will hang around and keep this in range, but the Tiger D will hold firm in the fourth quarter when needed.

Syracuse vs NC State Game Preview

Why NC State Will Win

The offense might not be as explosive as last year’s version, but it’s finding a way to keep things moving.

The passing game was decent in the loss to Clemson, the running game took over in the win against Florida State, and it all works in a system that got the team here at 5-1.

Keep the turnovers to a bare minimum – the O is good for one in this – the style controls the clock, and it’s all up to the D to take care of the rest.

Syracuse hasn’t seen any sort of a defense like this yet. Purdue’s is close, but it’s going to be tough throwing on a secondary that’s been the most effective in the ACC so far. But …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Syracuse Will Win

The Syracuse defense is currently No. 1 in the ACC.

Granted, that’s partly because of the schedule – more on that in a moment – but the pass rush is great, the run D has been a brick wall, and again, NC State isn’t high-powered and hasn’t put up points in bunches against anyone with a pulse.

The Orange have their style. Sean Tucker was left in WAY too long in a scrimmage against Wagner, but he had two weeks to freshen up, the team is rested while the Wolfpack are coming off tough battles against Clemson and Florida State, and the style of play might work.

As long as the Syracuse O line can hold up – NC State doesn’t have much of a pass rush – QB Garrett Shrader and Tucker should be able to do what they want.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Is Devin Leary okay? The NC State quarterback hurt his shoulder and is questionable, but can he really go? No matter what, this is where the kicking game comes in.

Syracuse might be unbeaten, but it took a clutch late throw to get by Purdue, and that’s been about it. Beating Virginia and Louisville isn’t that big a deal this year, and it’s been a huge help to only leave home once so far – going to UConn isn’t really a true dangerous road game.

NC State is going to power its way through.

The defense that got ripped up by the FSU running game last week will have a few problems with Tucker, but there will be plenty of bending without breaking.

The offensive side won’t be pretty – assume Leary isn’t a go for now – and it’ll get a huge game out of Christopher Dunn. The veteran kicker has yet to miss this year.
