Kansas State (0-0) vs Arkansas State (0-1) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Arkansas State Will Win

The Red Wolves weren’t bad in the 37-24 loss to Memphis in the opener. They got in a little bit of work, the passing game was fine, and they provided a push against a team that made it into the New Year’s Six last year.

ASU has a strong enough passing game to be a problem for a revamped Kansas State secondary that won’t get a whole lot of help from an okay pass rush. Wyatt Hubert is a terrific playmaker in the backfield, but the Red Wolves should have time to work.

Expect more than 400 yards of total ASU offense.

CFN Preview 2020: Every Team Preview, Rankings, Predictions

Why Kansas State Will Win

Memphis isn’t exactly known as a program for its ability to milk the clock – it wasn’t bad last year in time of possession, but its game is more about speed and big plays. It was able to hold the ball for over 34 minutes against Arkansas State.

The Red Wolves like to operate quickly with a fast tempo, and while it all usually works, they never have the ball – they were 113th in the nation last year in time of possession.

The Kansas State program for years and years and years has lived off of control. Last year’s team was ninth in the nation and first in the Big 12 in time of possession, and against ASU it should have the ball for at least 35 minutes.

CFN College Football Experts Picks, Week 2

What’s Going To Happen

Time of possession, turnover margin – ASU gave it away three times against Memphis – and doing the little things right. Kansas State will overcome a sluggish overall offensive performance by always keeping the game plays at the level it likes.

This is the game to get the revamped offensive line in sync, and it’s not always going to be pretty. However, the Wildcats will go on enough long marches to do what they must to get the win, even if they won’t ever get comfortable.

Kansas (0-0) vs Coastal Carolina (0-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Coastal Carolina Will Win

How did Coastal Carolina pull off the 12-7 win over the Jayhawks last year in Lawrence? It got more physical than the Power Five program.

The Chanticleers were miserable at moving the chains, but they were able to slow things down and pound away for a tough 172 yards while holding the ball for almost 35 minutes. Now they get four starters back on the line to provide a push for star RB CJ Marable – who ran for 148 yards and a score.

They didn’t turn the ball over, were +2 in turnover margin, and Kansas couldn’t do much of anything after taking an early 7-0 lead.

And this year’s Coastal Carolina team is better.

CFN Preview 2020: Every Team Preview, Rankings, Predictions

Why Kansas Will Win

The skill talent is good enough to be far more explosive and far more effective than last year’s version.

RB Pooka Williams is the star of the show, but the receivers are there, too, with three of the top four targets returning. Coastal Carolina DE Tarron Jackson is magnificent, but the overall pass rush shouldn’t be enough to bother the Jayhawk backfield.

Defensively, KU has an okay secondary, and head coach Les Miles has been able to improve the talent over the last year, but …

CFN College Football Experts Picks, Week 2

What’s Going To Happen

Really, how healthy is Kansas? There was reportedly a COVID-19 breakout on the football team, but a spokesman said the team should be fine and ready to go.

This is a dangerous Coastal Carolina team with a strong enough starting 22 to be a problem. Kansas will find more offense than it showed in last year’s loss, and motivation won’t be a problem.

It won’t be pretty, and it won’t be easy, but the Jayhawks will pull this out helped by a few takeaways it wasn’t able to generate last year.

Memphis (0-0) vs Arkansas State (0-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Arkansas State Will Win

The Arkansas State offense has the chops to keep up with whatever the Memphis attack puts on the board.

It won’t matter if it’s Logan Bonner or Layne Hatcher at quarterback, the Red Wolves will crank up a passing game with the firepower to put up 300 yards through the air and score in bunches.

The Memphis defense should be a bit better as the season goes on under new defensive coordinator Mike McIntyre, but it’s not going to be a brick wall right away. ASU will come up with just enough of a ground game to take some of the pressure off of the rest of the offense.

The Red Wolves get a wee bit of a break defensively with Memphis star RB Kenneth Gainwell choosing to opt out on the 2020 season, but …

CFN 2020 Arkansas State Preview

Why Memphis Will Win

The Arkansas State defense is going to be in for a long, long day.

Again, the offense should be strong enough to keep this from getting out of hand, but the defensive side that was 124th in the nation last year has to replace a whole slew of big producers from last year’s group.

On the other side, the ASU offensive line might get back a ton of experience, but it was but a soft breeze against most decent pass rushes last year. Now it has to go against a Tiger pass rush that gets back Joseph Dorceus and a whole slew of other active playmakers.

No, the Memphis defense won’t shut down the ASU offense to a dead stop, but it’ll hold its own just enough in key moments to turn good drives into field goal attempts.

CFN 2020 Memphis Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Be upset is there aren’t a whole lot of fireworks.

Even without Gainwell, Memphis and new head coach Ryan Silverfield – in his first regular season game as the main man – will be more than fine. The offense should be able to keep the big plays from last season going against a mediocre ASU defense.

The Red Wolves will do their part to make Memphis keep pressing. They won’t go away, but they won’t be able to keep up in the fourth quarter.

In a new era, look for the Tigers to make a statement, at least offensively.
