Saint Joseph’s at Penn odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Saint Joseph’s at Penn odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Saint Joseph’s Hawks (2-3) and Penn Quakers (5-4) tussle Wednesday at The Palestra in Philadelphia. Tip-off is slated for 8:15 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Saint Joseph’s vs. Penn odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

The SJU-Penn contest makes for the back half of a Big 5 doubleheader at the historic venue. Philly neighbors Temple and La Salle will play the opener.

Saint Joseph’s is playing its first true road game, and it’s a hometown affair in a familiar building. The Hawks are 2-0 at home and 0-3 across a trio of neutral-site games. SJU’s last game was a neutral-site contest against South Florida on Nov. 22. St. Joe’s was a 2-point favorite, but the Hawks shot 31.4% and lost 75-62.

The Quakers also played on Nov. 22, but they have played 3 games since (Nov. 25, 26 and 27): Pennsylvania played in the inaugural Cathedral Classic, which was at The Palestra, going 3-0 straight-up and 3-0 ATS. The Quakers shot a red-hot 47.8% from beyond the arc, making 11.0 treys per game and winning by an average margin of 15.0 points.

Saint Joseph’s at Penn picks and predictions

Prediction

Penn 75, Saint Joseph’s 71

Moneyline

Too much juice likely obscures the true odds in the middle. PASS.

Against the spread

This match-up features a prominent rust (Saint Joseph’s)-vs.-rest (Penn) angle. The Penn side looks to be a tad overripe: the Quakers were a solid play last week; they are likely being over-bet now.

Mix in some shooting regression of both sides; for an SJU side that shoots a lot of 3s, there is more marginal gain to the Hawks getting a better shooting performance. Saint Joseph’s does well getting to the free-throw line.

In a home-away-from-home game against a likely fatigued Penn, BACK THE HAWKS +5.5 (-115).

Over/Under

This figures as a slightly faster-than-average game and a loose one. However, some other factors, and maybe Penn’s fatigue, swing things the other way. AVOID.

Portland Trail Blazers at Los Angeles Lakers odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Portland Trail Blazers at Los Angeles Lakers odds and lines, with NBA expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Portland Trail Blazers (11-10) square off against the Los Angeles Lakers (7-12) Wednesday at Cypto.com Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 10:30 p.m. ET (NBA TV). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Trail Blazers vs. Lakers odds, and make our expert NBA picks and predictions.

The Trail Blazers lost 118-112 to the Los Angeles Clippers Tuesday as they failed to cover as 4-point favorites. Portland has lost 6 of its last 7, and 7 of its last 10, games.

The Lakers suffered a 116-115 loss to the Indiana Pacers on a game-winning shot Monday as they failed to cover as 3.5-point favorites. Los Angeles has won 5 of its last 7 games.

Trail Blazers at Lakers picks and predictions

Prediction

Lakers 112, Trail Blazers 108

Moneyline

AVOID the moneyline in this game unless you’re confident that the Trail Blazers can secure a win on the road. After a devastating loss Monday, I expect James and Davis to have stellar performances for the Lakers, but the odds for them to win aren’t worth taking straight up.

Against the spread

TRAIL BLAZERS +5.5 (-110) is my lean as I expect a close game between Portland and Los Angeles. Even though G Damian Lillard is sidelined, the Trail Blazers have gotten fantastic contributions from G Anfernee Simons and F Jerami Grant.

The Trail Blazers are 15-6 ATS in their last 21 meetings with the Lakers in Los Angeles.

Over/Under

While the Lakers play at the league’s fastest pace, the Trail Blazers play at the 3rd-slowest pace. Despite many expecting this to be a high-scoring contest, UNDER 224.5 (-110) appears to be the ideal choice in this game.

The Under is 7-1 in the last 8 meetings between the Trail Blazers and the Lakers.

Miami Heat at Boston Celtics odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Miami Heat at Boston Celtics odds and lines, with NBA expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Miami Heat (10-11) visit TD Garden Wednesday to take on the Boston Celtics (17-4). Tip is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET (NBA TV). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Celtics vs. Heat odds, and make our expert NBA picks and predictions.

The Celtics thrashed the Hornets 140-105 on Monday, covering as 11-point home favorites. Boston pushed their record to 8-2 against the spread (ATS) in its last 10 and has covered 4 straight. It is also an impressive 10-1 straight up at home this season.

The Heat beat the Hawks 106-98 on the road Sunday, covering as 3.5-point road underdogs. Miami used a +17 second half to jolt ahead. The Heat have covered 3 of their last 5 and are 5-4-1 ATS in their last 10 games.

Heat at Celtics key injuries

Heat

  • F Jaylen Brown (neck) questionable

Celtics

  • F Jimmy Butler (knee) out
  • G Tyler Herro (ankle) questionable
  • G Max Strus (shoulder) probable

For most recent updates: Official NBA injury report.

Heat at Celtics picks and predictions

Prediction

Celtics 115, Heat 106

Moneyline

PASS.

There’s no value here either way as the Celtics, while the better team, aren’t worth 4 units to return 1. Similarly, with Butler out, the Heat may not have the talent to hang with Boston.

Against the spread

LEAN HEAT +9.5 (-120).

Butler may be sidelined, but the Heat are playing some of their best ball of the season, having won 3 straight games. They’ve been able to do that with a solid 3-point defense, ranking 10th in opponents shooting from deep, and the league’s 2nd-best free-throw shooting. The leadership of G Kyle Lowry has aided their success as well.

The Celtics’ success comes from being the No. 1 team in terms of effective field goal rate, but the Heat’s opponents shoot just the 7th-fewest attempts per game.

Miami is a deep enough team with enough leadership to back that it can keep a primetime game without single digits.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 224.5 (-110).

How many points are scored in a game often depends on the tempo, and neither team wants to run. The Celtics rank 18th in pace with the Heat sitting 26th in the NBA.

Both teams also rank in the league’s top 10 in turnover rate, so neither gives the ball up which should allow for fewer transition opportunities. Miami is 2-4 O/U in its last 6 while Boston is 3-4 O/U in its last 7.

Back the Under 224.5 (-110) here.

Edmonton Oilers at Chicago Blackhawks odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Edmonton Oilers at Chicago Blackhawks odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Edmonton Oilers (12-10-0) and Chicago Blackhawks (6-11-4) meet Wednesday at United Center in Chicago. Puck drop is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. ET (TNT). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Oilers vs. Blackhawks odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Oilers have picked up back-to-back wins on the road against the New York Rangers, and at home against the Florida Panthers, both by a 4-3 score. It’s Edmonton’s longest win streak since a season-high 5-game run from Oct. 24-Nov. 1.

Edmonton has already faced the Blackhawks at United Center, winning a wild 6-5 decision behind Jack Campbell on Oct. 27 as the Over comfortably connected.

The Blackhawks are licking their wounds after a 7-2 beating from the visiting Winnipeg Jets on Sunday. Chicago is in the midst of an 0-6-1 nosedive.

Oilers at Blackhawks projected goalies

Jack Campbell (7-5-0, 4.04 GAA, .875 SV%) vs. Petr Mrazek (1-5-1, 4.27 GAA, .878 SV%)

Campbell allowed 3 goals on 23 shots last time out on the road against the New York Rangers. It has been buyer’s remorse for the Oilers, as “Soup” has allowed 3 or more goals in 7 of the last 8 starts. And after a rough October, he has actually gotten worse in November, going 3-3-0 with a 4.18 GAA and .863 SV%.

Mrazek won on Oct. 15 in San Jose, but that was his last taste of success. Since flipping the calendar to November, he has been downright awful. Mrazek is 0-4-1 with a 4.54 GAA and .880 SV%.

Oilers at Blackhawks picks and predictions

Prediction

Oilers 5, Blackhawks 3

Moneyline

The Oilers (-210) will cost you more than 2 times your potential return, and that’s way too expensive despite the struggles of Mrazek and the Blackhawks (+180) lately.

If Campbell were humming along lately, maybe this would be somewhat tempting, but with Edmonton’s offense, it’s a much better value to look to the puck line instead.

PASS.

Puck line/Against the spread

The OILERS -1.5 (+115) are a better value on the puck line, as Edmonton has the offense to make Mrazek’s night very short.

The Blackhawks are 0-6-1 in the last 7 games overall, and each of the 6 losses in regulation have been by 2 or more goals.

Over/Under

OVER 6.5 (-115) is the best play on the board here.

The last time these teams squared off, we saw a total of 11 goals in this same venue. The teams haven’t gotten better, and, in fact, both of these goaltenders are ice-cold and playing even worse than October. Look for a track meet and plenty of fire-wagon hockey.

New York Rangers at Ottawa Senators odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s New York Rangers at Ottawa Senators odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The New York Rangers (10-9-4) and Ottawa Senators (8-12-1) meet Wednesday at Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Rangers vs. Senators odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Rangers are looking to slap the brakes on a 3-game skid, including a 5-3 setback against the red-hot New Jersey Devils at Madison Square Garden at home Monday. New York has allowed 3 or more goals in 4 consecutive outings.

The Senators have picked up back-to-back wins on the road against the Anaheim Ducks (5-1, Friday) and Los Angeles Kings (3-2 in overtime, Sunday). It’s actually the longest win streak for Ottawa since posting 4 straight victories from Oct. 18-24.

Rangers at Senators projected goalies

Igor Shesterkin (10-4-3, 2.58 GAA, .913 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Cam Talbot (3-5-0, 2.51 GAA, .919 SV%)

Shesterkin has allowed 11 goals across the past 3 starts, and he has lost each of his last 2 contests with 4 goals allowed in each. The defending Vezina Trophy winner is starting to round into form, going 5-4-1 with a 2.60 GAA and .912 SV% with a shutout in 10 starts in November.

Talbot has won back-to-back starts, yielding just 3 goals on 59 shots in the process after starting 1-5-0 in his first 6 starts. Talbot has allowed 3 or fewer goals in 7 straight appearances.

Play our free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Rangers at Senators picks and predictions

Prediction

Senators 3, Rangers 2

Moneyline

The SENATORS (+110) are a decent play at home, as they look for a 3-game winning streak over the skidding Rangers.

Facing Shesterkin is no easy feat, as the defending Vezina Trophy winner has been rounding into form lately. However, Talbot is playing his best hockey of the season too.

The Senators are 9-3 in the past 12 home games against the Rangers. It’s uncanny, as Ottawa has just had its way with the Blueshirts over the years, and the way these teams have been going lately, it appears that trend will continue.

Puck line/Against the spread

The Senators +1.5 (-240) will cost you more than 2 times your potential return if you’d like a little insurance and just can’t pull the trigger and take the home ‘dogs straight up. That’s way too expensive, though. Just go with the moneyline and enjoy.

AVOID.

Over/Under

UNDER 6.5 (-115) is the play, as all trends point to a lower-scoring game.

The Under has hit in 4 of the past 5 games on the road for the Rangers while going 19-9 in the past 28 games overall.

The Under is also on an 8-0 run for the Senators, while going 4-1 in the past 5 games at home.

The Under also has a long history when these teams skate together, going 41-14-12 in the past 67 meetings overall and 20-7-7 in the past 34 meetings in Canada’s capital city.

Georgetown at Texas Tech odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Georgetown at Texas Tech odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Georgetown Hoyas (4-3) and the Texas Tech Red Raiders (4-2) meet Wednesday at United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock, Texas. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET (Big 12 Network/ESPN+). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Georgetown vs. Texas Tech odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

The Hoyas have had a difficult time lately, winning just 2 of the past 5 games overall, with losses to Northwestern (Nov. 15), Loyola Marymount on a neutral floor (Nov. 18) and American (last Wednesday). Overall, the Hoyas are 2-4 ATS in their 6 games with a spread this season.

The Red Raiders are looking to take out their frustrations on the skidding Hoyas after suffering an 80-73 loss last time out against Ohio State on a neutral floor last Wednesday. Texas Tech has dropped 2 of the past 3 outings and is just 2-4 ATS overall.

Georgetown at Texas Tech picks and predictions

Prediction

Texas Tech 75, Georgetown 60

Moneyline

Texas Tech (-1800) is the right side here, but there’s no value in betting 18 times your potential return on the moneyline. PASS.

Against the spread

GEORGETOWN +17.5 (-115) is the lean here, as Texas Tech just hasn’t flexed its muscle on offense this season.

The Red Raiders have a lockdown defense, yielding just 58.7 PPG, but this team is also 228th in the nation on offense, going for just 70.5 PPG. It is especially poor from behind the 3-point line, hitting at just 33.0% to rank 219th overall.

Texas Tech has scored 73 or fewer points in 5 of its 6 games overall, including 2 of 3 at home. That will hold it back from covering a big number against Georgetown.

Over/Under

UNDER 137.5 (-110) is the lean, based mostly on the struggling offense of Georgetown, and the suffocating defense of Texas Tech.

The Under has cashed in all 3 home games for the Red Raiders this season, as they have allowed 55 or fewer points in each outing.

The Under has cashed in 4 straight games overall for the Hoyas, and it has scored 70 or fewer points in 4 of its past 5 games overall.

76ers at Cavaliers picks and predictions

Prediction

Cavaliers 112, 76ers 106

Moneyline

Even though I envision seeing the Cavaliers winning at home on Wednesday, I’ll PASS on the moneyline in this game. This should be a close game, so it’s not worth the risk taking Cleveland straight up to secure a victory at the current odds.

Against the spread

While I won’t take Cleveland to win straight up, CAVALIERS -3.5 (-110) is an enticing wager in this game. While Allen won’t be available to guard C Joel Embiid, the Cavaliers should get a better performance out of G Donovan Mitchell after he scored only 8 points in Monday’s loss to the Raptors.

The Cavaliers are 9-1-1 ATS in their last 11 home games. Meanwhile, the 76ers are 2-5-1 ATS in their last 8 meetings with the Cavaliers.

Over/Under

OVER 211.5 (-110) appears to be too low of a number despite the injuries for both teams. Even though most of the trends point toward the Under being the ideal bet, the 76ers and the Cavaliers have hit Over 211.5 points in 3 straight meetings.

Rutgers at Miami odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Rutgers at Miami odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights (5-1) and Miami Hurricanes (6-1) meet Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. ET (ESPNU) at the Watsco Center. Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Rutgers vs. Miami odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Rutgers lost to Temple Nov. 18, but has rebounded with 2 wins by walk-over margins. The 2nd of those was an 83-49 win (covering a -26 line) against Central Connecticut State on Saturday. Rutgers played stellar defense in that game and for the season has held opponents to a 34.1% mark from the floor.

The Hurricanes are 4-0 at home. They are coming off a taut 66-64 win (as a -1.5 favorite) at UCF Sunday. Miami forced 15 turnovers in that contest and have forced 15.7 turnovers per game on average.

Wednesday’s game is part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

Rutgers at Miami picks and predictions

Prediction

Miami 70, Rutgers 66

Moneyline

Rutgers has had an easy schedule and is playing its 1st true road game of the season. The Knights’ setback against Temple on a neutral floor is instructive: they trailed by double digits for most of the middle 20 minutes of that game.

Miami’s offense is efficient, though with few looks from the free-throw line so far. The Hurricanes were on a solid trend line late last season, and they have carried that momentum forward.

TAKE MIAMI -150.

Against the spread

The Scarlet Knights are 2-7-1 ATS in their last 10 road games vs. a team with a home winning percentage greater than .600. The Hurricanes are 7-2-1 ATS in their last 10 games vs. a team with a winning straight-up record.

The juice cuts in a bit here, but some bettors may want to consider a split play, splicing their unit into plays on the moneyline and here against the spread with MIAMI -2.5 (-115).

Over/Under

The pace here figures to be slightly faster than average. Other scoring indicators and team attributes swing the score both ways. That creates enough grey area to make for a PASS.

Temple vs. La Salle odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Temple vs. La Salle odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Temple Owls (3-4) and La Salle Explorers (3-3) clash in Philadelphia Tuesday with tip at The Palestra set for 6 p.m. ET.  Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Temple vs. La Salle odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

The Owls-Explorers contest marks the front half of a Big 5 doubleheader at The Palestra. Philly neighbors Saint Joseph’s and Penn will play the nightcap.

Temple covered as a -9 favorite in its last game as the Owls got 25 points from G Khalif Battle in a 73-61 win over Drexel. Battle has averaged 23.0 points per game in the team’s last 4 games. Temple went 2-2 straight-up and 2-2 against the spread (ATS) in those 4 games.

La Salle is 1-2 with 3 ATS losses in its last 3 games. The Explorers are coming off a 65-62 win over Binghamton Saturday, but shooting woes have plagued the team in recent games. La Salle has shot just 39.4% from the field in the last 4 games.

Temple at La Salle picks and predictions

Prediction

Temple 70, La Salle 63

Moneyline

Peg Temple as a 2/3 betting proposition in this contest. We’d want a tag under -200 to have room for profit. PASS on the current tag.

Against the spread

Temple brings back more of its talent from a year ago and was favored by 7 when these teams met last Dec. 1. The Owls won that home game 73-57.

Temple has played a tougher slate so far, though La Salle has played Villanova and Wake Forest, a couple of squads just a tick better than the Owls. Those contests netted losses by 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Temple launches a lot of 3s as part of its offense; La Salle’s early-season perimeter defense has been lacking. TAKE THE OWLS -5.5 (-115). At this number and this price, this is a small-confidence play: consider a partial-unit wager when backing Temple. A -4.5 or -5 or a better price would change the equation.

Over/Under

Several prominent models peg the game right at 134. Its a fast (La Salle)-vs. slow (Temple) clash, and a mid-130s total seems unassailable. PASS.

Providence at TCU odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Providence at TCU odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Providence Friars (5-2) and the TCU Horned Frogs (5-1) meet Wednesday at Ed and Mae Schollmaier Arena in Fort Worth. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET (Big 12 Network/ESPN+). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Providence vs. TCU odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

The Friars have bounced back from a pair of neutral-floor losses against Miami and Saint Louis by posting wins over Merrimack (71-57 last Wednesday) and Columbia (78-64 Saturday). While Providence has a solid overall record, its best win so far might be over Rider, and that’s not terribly impressive.

The Horned Frogs were very successful on a neutral floor, picking up victories over Cal (59-48 Friday) and Iowa (79-66 Saturday). TCU started off slow, winning on a tip-in at the buzzer against Arkansas-Pine Bluff in its opener on Nov. 7, and it also fell against Northwestern State on Nov. 14. However, it has ticked off 3 straight wins and appears to finally be rounding into form. The Frogs are 2-1 ATS in the previous 3 outings.

Providence at TCU picks and predictions

Prediction

TCU 69, Providence 66

Moneyline

There was no moneyline at the time of publishing.

Against the spread

PROVIDENCE +6.5 (-110) is the surprising play here, catching more than 3 buckets.

It really has nothing to do with the play of the Friars, as they have been struggling overall, but TCU could be without 2 starters, F Emanuel Miller (back) and G Micah Peavy (knee). Miller is averaging 13.3 PPG with 5.8 RPG and 2.0 APG, and he is the team’s leader from behind the arc at 37.3%. Peavy is the team’s 3rd-leading scorer with 9.7 PPG with 3.8 RPG, 1.8 APG and 1.2 SPG.

Over/Under

UNDER 135.5 (-110) is the lean, and worth a half-unit play.

The injury concerns for the Horned Frogs and the shooting struggles of the Friars have the arrow pointing to the Under in this one.

The Under has cashed in 4 straight for Providence while going 3-1 in the past 4 games for TCU.
