Betting 101: How to bet on the UFC for beginners

Looking at the various sports betting options centered around UFC, with betting advice, tips and definitions of key terms.

Wagering on the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) can be very lucrative for bettors. We’ll take a look at ways to minimize risk while maximizing profits, especially for the bettor looking to dip their toe into the mixed-martial arts betting pool for the first time.

UFC betting: Ways to bet

Access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list of today’s sports betting odds and lines.

  • 2-way betting: Each individual bout can simply be wagered upon picking a straight-up winner, similar to a moneyline bet in the other major sports, with a favorite and an underdog.
  • Method of victory: If you like a fighter to win, but perhaps he/she is an overwhelming favorite, you can be more specific to mitigate your risk. There are a few different ways a bout can end. A fighter can win on points, either a unanimous decision, split decision or a majority decision. The fight can also end in a draw, or tie. In addition, you can bet on a fighter to win via submission or a KO/TKO.
  • Round betting: Fights which are either preliminaries or on the main card leading up to the main event/co-main events are three rounds, while main events are five rounds. You can choose a fighter to win in a certain round and/or you can bet the Over/Under on when the fight will end. For instance, if you feel the fight will go the distance, you would bet the Over.
  • Double chance betting: One of my favorite betting props is double chance betting. If you are particularly interested in betting a fighter who is also a submission specialist facing another fighter with terrible defense, you might take the favorite to win by submission and points. If he doesn’t win by submission, but wins on points, or vice versa, you still win.

UFC betting: Key betting terms to know

  • Favorite: The fighter who is more likely to win the fight will require more than your return on investment.
  • Underdog: On the flip side, this is the fighter not expected to win. It can be more lucrative than taking the favorite, as you will return your stake and plus-money from your wager.
  • Push or Draw: A wager which ends in a tie, which is not a losing ticket, but not a winning ticket, either. You simply receive your wager back.
  • Chalk: This refers to a heavy favorite. For example, -200 and higher is considered heavy chalk.
  • Parlay: If you were to bet two fighters to win on the 2-way line, for example, you would need to win each end of the bet to cash. You can still win a parlay if one end wins and the other is a push.

UFC betting: How do odds work?

Mixed-martial arts odds can vary greatly. Sometimes the favorite is not terribly steep, but other times, particularly in undercard events, the favorite can have rather high odds. For example, if you were to bet an overwhelming favorite at -750, you would need to risk $75 to profit just $10. An underdog wager at +190 would profit $19 on a $10 bet.

Is sports betting legal in California? We look at the latest information.

No, sports betting in California is not legal at this time.

Sports betting in California

Early in 2020 California held its first hearing on legal sports betting. The Joint Assembly and Senate Government Organizational Committees held a meeting in Sacramento Jan. 8 to get input from industry experts on what the state’s betting market could look like. The state stands to have the country’s largest legal sports betting market based on population and the highest number of professional teams.

Yet, experts don’t believe California will have legal sports betting in the near future due to the state’s tribal casinos, card rooms and racetracks.

Is sports betting legal in North Dakota? We look at the latest information.

No, sports betting in North Dakota is not legal at this time.

Sports betting in North Dakota

Two bills were introduced in 2019, but were struck down. HB 1254, sponsored by Republican Congressman Jason Dockter, would have permitted charitable gaming organizations to offer wagers on sports. However, the head of the North Dakota University system opposed the bill after meeting with campus presidents. The House in Bismarck defeated legislation on that bill and another limiting bets to just professional sports, too.

Minnesota sports betting: Is legal sports betting available in Minnesota?

Is sports betting legal in Minnesota? We look at the latest information.

No, sports betting in Minnesota is not legal at this time.

Sports betting in Minnesota

Native American tribes in the Land of 10,000 Lakers continue to be opposed to sports wagering. Republican Senator Roger Chamberlain introduced a new version of SF 1894, a bill he previously introduced on sports betting. He proposed requiring in-person registration for mobile sports wagering. Tribes continue to be concerned about how mobile sports betting would affect wagering in their physical, legal casinos. Minnesota does have legal gambling at tribal casinos, as well as a state lottery and charitable gaming, including bingo.

Republican Congressman Pat Garofalo introduced HF 1278 on sports betting in 2019, but he did not allow participation to race tracks. His sports betting was limited to wagering at tribal casinos, and all 11 Indian tribes remained in opposition.

Online sportsbooks in Minnesota

Retail sportsbooks in Minnesota

None. Unless the Native American tribal leaders can be persuaded to change their minds, and it sounds like a daunting task, Minnesotans will be prohibited from wagering in person on sports anytime soon. Sports betting is now legal in Iowa, so it’s a short trip south for a majority of the state’s population.

Michigan sports betting: Is legal sports betting available in Michigan?

Is sports betting legal in Michigan? We look at the latest information.

Yes, sports betting in Michigan is legal.

Sports betting in Michigan

Democrat Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed sports wagering into law in Dec. 2019, allowing mobile sports betting, as well as wagering to be done at three commercial and 23 tribal casinos across the state. Wagers can also be made at two race tracks hosting pari-mutuel horse racing. Sports betting revenue is taxed at 8.4 percent, with three commercial casinos in the Motor City paying an additional 1.25 percent in city tax.

Sports betting launched at Greektown and MGM Detroit casinos March 12, 2020, with MotorCity Casino also launching in mid-March. Two tribal casinos, including the Grand Traverse Bay in Acme Township, are operated by the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. The Turtle Creek Casino & Hotel in Williamsburg also plans a full retail sportsbook with betting provided by William Hill, as well as the Leelanau Sands Casino on the western shore. None are online yet, however.

Online sportsbooks in Michigan

None. Online wagering isn’t likely to launch in Michigan until early 2021.

Massachusetts sports betting: Is legal sports betting available in Massachusetts?

Is sports betting legal in Massachusetts? We look at the latest information.

No, sports betting in Massachusetts is not legal at this time.

Sports betting in Massachusetts

In late February 2020, legislation was released by a panel which has been studying sports betting for a year. Casinos, horse racing tracks, the state’s only slots parlor, and up to five online-only operators of sports wagering could be allowed to offer sports betting soon. Anyone wishing to bet would need to be at least 21 years old and physically be present inside state lines.

Republican Governor Charlie Baker proposed a bill in 2018 which would allow betting at licensed casinos and through online platforms. But other lawmakers have proposed similar legislation. It sounds like the state is closer to legalization like nearby New Hampshire and Rhode Island, than fellow New England states Maine and Vermont.

Another sticking point among legislators might be whether or not to allow betting on in-state institutions such as Boston College, UMass, Harvard and Northeastern.

Online sportsbooks in Massachusetts

None.

Retail sportsbooks in Massachusetts

None, but there are established casinos in the state. It likely won’t take long for areas to be created if legalization occurs.

Maryland sports betting: Is legal sports betting available in Maryland?

Is sports betting legal in Maryland? We look at the latest information.

No, sports betting in Maryland is not legal at this time.

Sports betting in Maryland

Republican State Senator Christopher R. West submitted SB 58 at the end of calendar year 2019. The bill which would permit casinos and horse tracks to offer sports wagering. If the bill passes through the legislature, it might be an issue for voters to decide in November 2020. According to West, a 20 percent revenue tax is part of the plan, which is the same tax rate for table games.

Online sportsbooks in Maryland

None. SB 58 does not include online or mobile betting, such as apps, which are popular in other states. According to reports, New Jersey made approximately $300 million in sports betting revenue in 2019, with more than 80 percent coming from online/apps, etc. …

Retail sportsbooks in Maryland

None. Until it’s legal, there are no retail sportsbooks. However, casinos are in place, such as MGM’s National Harbor Casino in Oxon Hill near Washington D.C., and plenty of horse tracks are in place as well. It wouldn’t take very long, pending legalization, for current sites to open up retail space. For now, it’s a quick trip to New Jersey if Marylanders wish to bet in a physical building. Washington D.C. has also voted to legalize, and might be coming online soon.

Louisiana sports betting: Is legal sports betting available in Louisiana?

Is sports betting legal in Louisiana? We look at the latest information.

No, sports betting in Louisiana is not legal at this time.

Sports betting in Louisiana

Legalization of sports betting was put up for a vote by committee members in 2019, but they struck down SB 153 by a 14-6 margin. In addition, there were several amendments requested in the legislature, but ultimately the groups could not agree on taxation.

Democrat Governor John Bel Edwards reportedly supports legalized sports gambling, but the state legislature is currently a majority Republican, so that’s another obstacle. There are plenty of casinos in the state of Louisiana where you can play table games, slot machines, etc. …, including in the popular New Orleans area. However, sports betting remains an issue for another time.

Online sportsbooks in Louisiana

None.

Retail sportsbooks in Louisiana

As mentioned above, no retail sportsbooks currently exist, but casinos could easily convert space in short order if legalization takes place. For now, a quick trip to Mississippi will have to suffice, as sports wagering is legal in the Magnolia State. Gamblers in the northern part of the state can also cross over into Arkansas for their sports wagering fix.
