South Carolina vs Vanderbilt Game Preview

Why South Carolina Will Win

Just when it seemed like South Carolina was finding its groove, it all came apart in a strange 23-10 home loss to Missouri.

Vanderbilt might just be the cure to get past that fast.

The Commodore defense is having major problems against anyone who can throw, it hasn’t been great against the run, and the other side isn’t throwing well enough to keep things moving.

If that wasn’t enough, there isn’t much of a ground game, either. Vandy hasn’t hit 60 rushing yards in three of the last four games, but …

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

South Carolina is good, but it’s not Alabama, Ole Miss, or Georgia. That’s who Vanderbilt dealt with over the last month, and it gave Missouri more of a run than the Gamecocks did.

South Carolina starts every game assuming two turnovers. The O has given it away multiple times in all eight games, but the D usually makes up for it with a few takeaways. That didn’t happen last week against Mizzou – USC was -2 in turnover margin – and it could be a problem against a rested Commodore D coming off a two week break.

Vanderbilt doesn’t turn the ball over enough to matter – just three giveaways spread out over the last three games – and the defense came up with two or more takeaways in three of the last four games.

The offense needs all the breaks it can get, and …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

There won’t be a consistent enough Vanderbilt passing game for the South Carolina defense to worry about, and the offense should be able to move better than it has over the last few weeks.

There won’t be anything pretty about this, but in South Carolina’s third road game of the season it’ll get just enough from Spencer Rattler and the passing attack to stay ahead after getting out to a decent start.

Missouri vs South Carolina Game Preview

Why Missouri Will Win

The Mizzou defense has been terrific. It’s generating pressure, it’s strong on third downs, and it’s been able to hold up well since the 40-12 debate against Kansas State.

The loss to the Wildcats was more on the offense – more on that in a moment – but the Tigers haven’t allowed more than 26 points to anyone in the last five games, including Georgia.

On the other side, South Carolina doesn’t generate much of a pass rush, it’s not going to have the ball for more than about 27 minutes, there will be turnovers.

The Gamecocks will give it up twice getting off the bus. However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why South Carolina Will Win

That’s baked into the cake. We know South Carolina will turn it over multiple times because it has done it in every game so far.

When Missouri turns it over, though, the mistakes come in bunches and are far more painful.

The O made the 17-14 win over Vanderbilt way harder than it had to be with four turnovers, and that’s coming off the three-giveaway game in the 24-17 loss to Florida. All of that is a few games removed from the fumble in overtime in the loss to Auburn.

South Carolina helps make up for its own mistakes with takeaways, generating ten in the last four games.

Yes, the competition had something to do with it – the losses came against Georgia and Arkansas – but the Gamecocks are now 5-0 when coming up with a turnover and 0-2 when they don’t. The Georgia game was the only time Mizzou got through a game turnover-free with multiple giveaways against every other FBS team.

All that, and …

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

South Carolina is finding a way.

QB Spencer Rattler isn’t always sharp, but he’s able to hit a big throw here in there – that arm is amazing – to change things up. No, there isn’t a pass rush, but the D has been solid enough against the run, and it’s not doing a ton of breaking to go along with all that bending.

That will all happen in this, too.

The passing game will be a bit better than it was in last week’s win over Texas A&M, the defense will hold up well enough, and to hammer this home, the turnovers – they’ll be there for both sides. The home team will benefit from that.

Texas A&M vs South Carolina Game Preview

Why Texas A&M Will Win

It’s not a question of whether or not the South Carolina turnovers will come. They’ll be there, but how many? It has yet to go a game this year without turning it over at least twice.

Texas A&M tends to play relatively low scoring, tight games with mistakes like the obligatory Spencer Rattler giveaway baked into the gameplan.

Now it’s up to the Aggies to not give them back. The two turnovers in row load to Appalachian State were part of the problem, and the four against Mississippi State helped turn the game into a rout.

Grind away with the running game against a defensive front that gives up 175 yards per game, keep the score low, and win the mistake battle.

South Carolina is 0-2 when it’s -3 in turnover margin. Texas A&M was +3 against Alabama, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why South Carolina Will Win

The Aggie defense doesn’t take the ball away in bunches.

South Carolina can’t be conservative, but it can’t force anything. Rattler wasn’t able to do much of anything in the loss to Georgia, but he got time against Charlotte and South Carolina State to tune up a bit, and he was sharp enough to complement the ground game in the win over Kentucky.

He’ll turn it loose a few times to stretch the A&M secondary, but as long as he’s able to hit the third down throws and come up with a few early scores, he’ll be doing his job.

Texas A&M is struggling to score – it’s last in the SEC in points per game. That’s partly because of the style, and partly because it’s missing the high-octane playmakers.

South Carolina is getting the O going at just the right time, but …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The Gamecocks got Kentucky without Will Levis. No excuses, win with what you’ve got, but that wasn’t the same Wildcat team without the top five overall draft pick QB.

They beat Charlotte and South Carolina State, and they started the season off by taking down Georgia State.

Again, win no matter what, you are what your record says you are, and …

It’s not like South Carolina has beaten a slew of killers, losing to Arkansas by 14 and Georgia by 41.

Texas A&M was at least competitive against Alabama, and it was fine against Mississippi State before the turnovers kicked in. Beating Arkansas and Miami isn’t amazing, but it’s something.

This is the fourth straight game away from home for the Aggies, and they’ll be fine as long as they can come up with a few first half scoring drives.

It’ll be tight until the end with A&M’s defense holding up in the final few minutes with a takeaway.
