SDSU Aztecs Fall 32-24 To USU Aggies In Double Overtime

San Diego State has now given up two straight critical games against underwhelming conference teams.

The Aztec Nation is bracing itself for the harsh reality that SDSU football may sustain its first losing season since 2009.

San Diego, CA-  On Saturday evening, November 4th, the San Diego State Aztecs (3-6, 1-4 MW) suffered a 32-24 defeat against the Utah State Aggies (4-5, 2-3 MW) in double overtime at Snapdragon Stadium.

After its second straight home loss against a struggling team, SDSU is now bracing for its first losing season in fourteen years. Prior to the Rocky Long era, the last Aztecs head coach to deliver a losing result was in fact Brady Hoke during his first stint as Aztecs head coach.

GAME RECAP

SDSU hosted the Utah State Aggies in front of a reported crowd of 23,096 at 4:00 p.m. PST. Both teams began the match with identical season records, and both were under pressure to win in pursuit of bowl eligibility.

During the first quarter, potential points weren’t registered when kicker Jack Browning missed a 42-yard field goal attempt.  After the scoreless first quarter, San Diego State came up with a touchdown in the second quarter when Jalen Mayden completed a nine-yard pass to Mark Redman and an extra point by Browning.

William Testa later managed a 24-yard field goal after the Aggies failed to score a touchdown, bringing the score to 7-3.  A key play at four minutes before the half involved the Aztecs faking a field goal when holder Zecharia Ramirez passed the ball to kicker Browning who was ultimately tackled for a 2-yard loss resulting in a turnover on downs, with the score remaining 7-3 at the half.

In the third quarter, at 8:51 minutes Utah State quarterback Cooper Legas, connected with Jaylen Royals for touchdown giving the Aggies a 10-7 lead. In the fourth and final quarter, the Aggies scored another touchdown to bring the score to 17-7. At 7:10 to go, Mayden connected on a 10-yard pass to Kenan Christon for touchdown making it 17-14.

SDSU blocked an Aggies punt with 2:25 remaining, which gave the Aztecs one more chance with Browning making a 23-yard field goal with 33 seconds remaining in regulation to make it 17-17, moving things into overtime.

In overtime, Mayden connected with Brionne Penny in the end zone, to give San Diego State a 24-17 lead, but Utah State responded immediately with a touchdown in turn.

The Aggies then started with the ball in 2OT and running back Robert Briggs scored on a 20-yard run before teammate Broc Lane successfully pulled off the two-point conversion required after the first OT.

The Aztecs had one last chance with the next possession, however the game was sealed when Mayden threw an interception to Ike Larsen who went for 62 yards in 2OT.

Mayden was 25-for-39 passing for 265 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Lucky Sutton led the Aztecs in rushing with 11 carries for 86 yards. Christon had a team-high 76 receiving yards.

SDSU linebacker Cody Moon managed a season-high 13 tackles and teammate Zyrus Fiaseu had a career-high three sacks.

COACHING CONCERNS

Fans and foes alike recognize that Aztecs performance is not up to the San Diego State football standard this season, and arguably, last season. San Diego State’s stock is taking a hit after years of strong, steady progress leading to national recognition and belief that SDSU was a G5 standard bearer ready for the next level, along with the Aztecs’ Pac-12 results for much of the last decade.

Rocky Long had the Aztecs showing up inside the AP Top 25 on numerous occasions, however Brady Hoke has the Aztecs falling well outside of the G5 Top 25 currently.

Even worse: the Aztecs are in rare territory now.

Now, the Aztecs need to best Colorado State, San Jose State, and Fresno State to avoid a losing season and possibly extend its bowl eligibility for its 14th straight season.  There was no bowl match during 2020, but the Aztecs did achieve eligibility that year.

One more loss gives the Aztecs their first losing season since the 2009 team went 4-8.

NEXT UP

On Saturday, November 11th, the SDSU Aztecs travel to Colorado State to face the Rams at 7pm, and Utah State hosts the Nevada Wolfpack at 3pm.

TV:  FS2

STREAM: FuboTV — Get a free trial

RADIO: San Diego Sports 760

SERIES RECORD:  San Diego State 13, Utah State 3

WEBSITES: San Diego State | Utah State

ODDS:  Utah State (-2.5)

This is a must-win game for both teams to stay in contention for a bowl. The has slipped away from San Diego State, but they still have a chance to finish over .500 before the end of the regular. For that to happen, San Diego State will have to win out and beat Utah State in Week 10.

Prior to the bye in Week 9, San Diego State suffered an ugly 6-0 loss at the hands of Nevada on Oct. 21. The Aztecs produced 204 total yards of offense. Jalen Mayden passed for 47 yards and the rushing attack accounted for 157 rushing yards. San Diego State’s defense held Nevada quarterback Brendon Lewis to 98 passing yards. The Aztecs had three sacks on Lewis.

How Will San Diego State Get The Win?

San Diego State’s offense will need to take a massive step forward to get the win over Utah State. Mayden needs to find a way to get the ball down the field and complete passes. He was one-dimensional and unable to make a great impact on the run game. Even if he is struggling throwing the ball against Utah State’s defense, he will need to complete more than six passes for under 50 yards.

If Mayden struggles, it could be a tough night for San Diego State. If he can manage the game, San Diego State has an opportunity to score points and get a home. This game will be dependent on San Diego State’s offensive improvements during the bye week.

Prediction

San Diego State 21, Utah State 20

San Diego State’s defense will make plays and force turnovers. This will be just enough for the Aztecs to sneak past the Aggies with a one-point win.

Week 9 is just about here for Mountain West football and our power rankings leading into the week are seeing some changes. The big change happened due to Nevada get its first win of the year by winning 6-0 over San Diego State.

The poll changes have a lot more to do with the Aztecs with the loss and the Wolf Pack getting its first win of the year.

UNLV keeps winning but can they crack the top three, our Magic Eight-Ball has that unlikely. The Rebels can make a move this week if they can upset Fresno State.

Here are how some of our staff voted.

GAME NOTES:  Nevada | New Mexico

ODDS:  Nevada (-1)

SP+ PROJECTION:  New Mexico by 3.0

FEI PROJECTION:  Nevada by 5.6

The Nevada Wolf Pack return to action on Saturday night as they take on the New Mexico Lobos in Reno.

Nevada returns to action after winning their first game in over 400 days as they defeated San Diego State 6-0 last week. The Wolf Pack offense was not good ( to put it kindly) but the defense played great. Nevada is looking to build on that performance and turn it into a winning streak.

The Wolf Pack are facing a New Mexico team that is 3-4 and snapped a long losing streak of their own last week. Their losing streak was a 14 game conference losing streak as they defeated Hawaii 42-21. The Lobos feature one of the best rushing attacks in the conference as they are averaging 179.71 rushing yards per game. The Lobos have a talented QB in Dylan Hopkins who is one of the better quarterbacks in the Mountain West this season.

The Lobos and the Wolf Pack are two teams that have snapped long losing streaks and are looking to extend their winning streaks. Can the Wolf Pack continue to play stellar defense while finding their offensive groove? Can the Wolf Pack extend their winning streak to two games?

Here are my ways on how Nevada can win against New Mexico

Finishing drives on offense with touchdowns

Last week against San Diego State, the Wolf Pack had four trips to the red zone. In those four trips, Nevada scored only two field goals and missed two field goals. The Wolf Pack had many chances to extend their lead but failed to do so.

Nevada’s offense must be able to move the ball and score touchdowns when in the red zone. The Wolf Pack offense is still struggling (we will get to one of those issues troubling their offensive line in the next key) so they need to score as many points as possible when they get the chance. And those points have to be touchdowns.

Nevada QB Brendon Lewis has had moments where he has done a good job of getting the offense into the red zone. For Nevada to win on Saturday night, Lewis and the Wolf Pack offense must finish drives with touchdowns.

Limit Penalties

The Wolf Pack committed 10 penalties for 58 yards in their win over San Diego State last week. Most of those penalties were committed by the Nevada offensive line for several false starts. And in two of Nevada’s last three games, they have committed 10 or more penalties.

The number of penalties committed by Nevada are just bad and Wolf Pack head coach Ken Wilson acknowledges this and says it must be fixed. “Obviously we have to cut those down,” Wilson said this week

Wilson also said about the penalties is that “ We’ve got to cut those down to finish drives, get us out of trouble, control the ball so we don’t have the short fields and stuff that the defense had to deal with a few times in that game”:

If Nevada defeats New Mexico on Saturday night, it will be because they limited those costly penalties on both sides of the ball. Especially on offense where those penalties crushed potential scoring drives. Limiting the penalties along with scoring points, will give Nevada a good chance to win.

Continued improvement on defense

Through the first six games of the season, the Nevada defense has been very charitable to opposing offenses. By charitable, I mean that Nevada’s defense was porous against opposing offenses. The Wolf Pack defense gave up 350 yards or more in their first five games of the season. Nevada’s defense was just a disaster when it came to defending offenses in the fist half of the season.

But Nevada’s defense played their best game of the season last week at San Diego against the Aztecs. Sure, the Aztec offense has been dreadful outside of Jalen Mayden but Nevada still had to show up and play and they played brilliantly. The Wolf Pack defense held the Aztec offense to zero points and only 204 yards of total offense.

Nevada’s defense will get a challenge this week as they face a New Mexico offense that has talent at the skills positions. Lobos QB Dylan Hopkins is fifth in the Mountain West in passing with 1,367 yards and Hopkins has thrown 10 touchdowns and only four interceptions. The Lobos have four receivers on their team that have caught at least 10 passes this season.

The Lobos have a talented running back in Jacory Croskey-Merritt who leads the Lobos in rushing with 545 rushing yards while scoring 11 touchdowns (tied for third among Mountain West running backs).  The Lobos possess an offense that can display good balance and that will present a challenge that Nevada must handle.

Nevada won last week because of their drastic improvement on defense. For Nevada to win their second straight game, their defense will need to continue that improvement against a good  Lobos offense.

Prediction

Nevada  17   New Mexico 14

Maybe, just maybe Nevada has turned the corner under Ken Wilson’s guidance. Nevada won for the first time in more than a year using a stifling defense and an offense that made no mistakes against SDSU.

The Wolf Pack’s next opponent, New Mexico, presents a tougher challenge as they have a much better offense than the Aztecs.

Nevada must continue their strong defensive play and find a way to be consistent on offense and score touchdowns. The Wolf Pack are still a work in progress on both sides of the ball but they are improving. Nevada will ride an improving defense and an offense that continues to not make a big mistake into their second win in a row this week.
