Rutgers women’s soccer found in transfer forward Gia Vicari a fit on and off the field

Rutgers women’s soccer added a dynamic forward in Gia Vicari this offseason.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Gia Vicari came to the Rutgers women’s soccer team this offseason, very much fitting a need for a team that very much needed a goal scorer. But most importantly, head coach Mike O’Neill believes that his program found a fit for the culture in and around this program.

Another person, O’Neill believes, who can ‘sweep the shed’ and get the Scarlet Knights back for another NCAA Tournament run.

Vicari, a graduate transfer from Georgetown, is coming off three-straight All-Big East First Team selections. Last season in 22 games (all starts), she had six goals and four assists.

Rutgers struggled last season to replace the production of Frankie Tagliaferri. In 2021, Tagliaferri scored 13 goals and had nine assists for Rutgers as they played their way to the final four of the NCAA Tournament.

Last season, Rutgers women’s soccer lost four straight games including their first round match-up in the NCAA Tournament. It was a disappointing close out to the season given the expectations around the team.

O’Neill believes that Vicari can help his deep team with her scoring ability and her movement off the ball.

“So I’ve been fortunate to watch Gia for a few years now. At the club level and we played against Georgetown, so I was able to, you know, be part of those games, the scouts. I know coach Nolan (Georgetown head coach Dave Nolan) very well. I talk to him a couple of times a week,” O’Neill told Rutgers Wire last week.

“But I’ve had that opportunity to watch her play. You get a chance to see what a special player she is. So when she became available – like last year, we had I think five from the transfer portal. So we kind of learned from what was good, and maybe some things that we would have liked to have changed. Because we’re still learning about the portal and when she became available and we know that she’s a good person and a good player who scores goals. Then you’re gonna get a closer look, no doubt about it.”

When Vicari, from Reading, PA, entered the transfer portal, O’Neill and his staff were immediately intrigued. But he felt the group had to do some homework first on the prospective player.

“But we had to make sure because we still had the 11 freshmen coming in so we wanted to make sure that when we went to the transfer portal, we wanted it to be a special player. And you know, the opportunity to have ‘G’ being part of our program was important to us,” O’Neill said.

“We watched on film, so we watched the movements. We watched how she was able she was very composed and clinical in front of the goal. But her movements without the ball are really good, super competitive. She has a history of winning which was important to us. That element is sometimes hard to teach.”

The final piece for O’Neill and his staff was to bring in Vicari for a visit. While O’Neill had heard good things about the forward from her former head coach at Georgetown, he wanted to see firsthand how she could fit into the program and the culture at Rutgers.

“So the last piece of the puzzle for us was getting to know the person. So when we brought her on campus, we had the opportunity to spend time with her and her family, and they fit right in…fit right in,” O’Neill said.

“So we talked so much about character and, and talent and we’re never going to sacrifice character for talent. It was important to us to get a chance to know Gia, her family – we heard all great things about her from coach Nolan, but you want to be able to experience that yourself.”

Emily Mason named defender to Watch by United Soccer Coaches

Rutgers soccer standout Emily Mason makes a preseason watchlist.

Over the last two years, Emily Mason has become vital to Rutgers success. Due to her ability to chip in on the attack and shut down offenses, the Flemington native has proven to be a matchup nightmare. As a result, she has gained national recognition and was recently named a 2023 player to watch by the United Soccer Coaches.

Mason joins a select group as only 35 players to earn a spot on the list. She is the only Rutgers player on the list and one of the two Big Ten players. As Mason looks to build on the best season of her college career, she now has added motivation.

In 16 games last year, the talented junior recorded seven points and added three goals to her resume. Due to her play, Mason earned Third-Team All-American, All-Big Ten First Team, and All-North Region First Team honors. While she appeared in nine fewer games than the year before, Mason made an impact every time she stepped on the field.

Additionally, Hunterdon Central Regional product contributed to eight shutouts. Mason continued to improve in her second collegiate season while gaining special recognition.

At the beginning of the 2022 campaign, Mason missed the first two games while playing for the United States Youth National Team at the U20 World Cup in Costa Rica. She previously won gold with the USYNT at the Concacaf Women’s Championship and the Sud Ladies Cup in 2021.

When the first whistle blows and the 2023 season begins, more eyes will be on Mason than ever before. For the talented back defender, it is a situation she has been waiting for.

Hosting Premier League club Brighton Hove & Albion was a learning experience for Rutgers soccer

Rutgers men’s soccer utilized an English Premier League club at their training facility to learn about player care.

This summer, Rutgers hosted an English Premier League club as part of Brighton Hove & Albion’s preseason tour. It was an opportunity for Jim McElderry to not just watch the tactics of one of the best clubs in the world, but to check-in on the little things that helped Brighton to a successful campaign last season.

Brighton & Hove Albion, who finished sixth in the league last year on 62 points, participated in a preseason tour of the United States along with several other English clubs..They participated in a preseason match at Red Bull Arena against Newcastle and while in New Jersey, they used Rutgers and the Miller Soccer Complex as a training base.

[lawrence-related id=29135]

For McElderry, the men’s soccer head coach, it was an exciting few days to see the ins and outs of how a Premier League club operates.

“Obviously, the quality of the players is fun to be around watching, you know, Premier League players train and play but I think watching their staff work was maybe more interesting to us in terms of how they used our facility and pre and post stuff that they did with their players,” McElderry said on a conference call this week to preview the season.

“Nothing that is rocket science but really interesting to watch how much care they give individual players – especially guys coming back from injury, how they work with the strength coaches.

“A lot to take away and even just the sessions they play some really good soccer as you know, and so watching them work and how they kind of build sessions was a lot of fun. Again, it’s, it’s not rocket science, but it’s just little subtle things that they’re doing and how they look after players. We’re lucky to have them here. It was just fun for our group to be around them and learn from them and have some of our players watch some of their sessions was a lot of fun for everybody.”

Rutgers is coming off a very strong 2022 season that saw them win the Big Ten Tournament. They made the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2015 and won their first conference tournament since 1997.

The Scarlet Knights have their first preseason game on Saturday against Drexel. They open the season on Aug. 24 with a non-conference game at Delaware.

Carli Lloyd rips into USWNT following World Cup tie: ‘You’re lucky to not be going home right now’

Carli Lloyd calls out the United States women’s national team following a disappointing tie.

Carli Lloyd wasn’t having any of it following the United States women’s national team nearly being bounced from the World Cup. A national team legend and former Rutgers women’s soccer star, Lloyd didn’t hold back following the United States tying Portugal in the final match of the group stages.

With the tie, the United States squeaked into the knockout rounds of the World Cup. The twice-defending champions were expected to ease into the next round of the tournament.

Instead, they struggled against Vietnam in their opening match and then looked lackluster in ties against the Netherlands and then Portugal. The Americans finished a shocking second in their group but will advance to the second round.

Following the match, she responded to video of some members of the United States national team dancing on the field. Others took selfies with fans.

“I have never witnessed – and just seeing these images for the first time right now on the desk,” Lloyd said on the set of Fox Sports following the tie with Portugal,

“I’ve never witnessed something like that. There’s a difference between being respectful of the fans and saying hello to your family, but to be dancing to be smiling. I mean, the player of the match was that post. You’re lucky to not be going home right now.”

At Rutgers, Lloyd was a standout performer and an All-Big East selection. She then continued her development to become one of the best players in the women’s game.

[lawrence-related id=28853]

Lloyd made over 300 international appearances for the United States She appeared in three World Cups (winning two) and three Olympics (two gold medals, one bronze).

Host Rob Stone tee’ed up Lloyd’s reaction this morning on Fox as the video of the celebrating Americans played on the screen.

“These are not the images we should be expecting to see from a team that survived Portugal and survived to get to the round of 16,” Stone said.

“I appreciate them taking care of the fans. But let me tell you, Carli Lloyd’s butt would be back in the locker room, kicking things, throwing things.”

Watch: USWNT, Rutgers legend Carli Lloyd previews the FIFA World Cup

Carli Lloyd talks about the United States national team in the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Now working with Fox Sports, former United States international Carli Lloyd believes that the Americans enter this FIFA World Cup with a target on their collective backs. Lloyd, born and raised in New Jersey, got her career started as a midfielder at Rutgers.

That career culminated in over 300 international appearances, three World Cup medals (won two) and three Olympics (two gold medals, one bronze).

Now working as an analyst for Fox, the broadcast partner for the tournament, Lloyd knows and understands the pressure on the United States. The Americans have won the last two World Cups. A win in this tournament would be the first-ever three-peat in World Cup history.

“It’s business as usual. The approach is always that the US is the favorite, the No. 1 team in the world. Everyone wants to go out there and beat them, there is a target on their back,” Lloyd said in a preview for Fox this week.

“They’re most likely not talking about a three-peat or really talking about the history they could potentially make. Everybody just knows that, they know in the back of their mind that history is at stake.”

The United States are the unquestioned favorites in this tournament. But there are a lot of other factors at play that could derail their plans for a parade.

This is the most balanced World Cup in the history of the women’s game as the standard of play and competition globally continues to rise. There are also time zone issues with this World Cup be jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

[lawrence-related id=28428]

“Ultimately it comes down to one game at a time. You can’t get ahead of yourself. The moment you get ahead of yourself is probably the moment you get knocked out or something. It’s really important to first and foremost come out first in their group – that’s their first battle,” Lloyd said.

“Once they hopefully do that, the next challenge is going to be making sure that they get past that knockout round.”

At Rutgers, Lloyd was four times named All-Big East. While with the Scarlet Knights, she played for the United States U21 national team.

Allison Lynch hoping to write unforgettable final chapter to her Rutgers career in 2023

Allison Lynch returns to Rutgers women’s soccer for a final shot at glory.

While the Rutgers women’s soccer season is still months away, anticipation is building for the future. Last year the Scarlet Knights posted a 13-5-2 record and performed well in conference play. They will be highly motivated to make a deep playoff run in the fall as Allison Lynch leads the way in her final season.

In February, Rutgers got a boost when the Bridgewater native announced she would be returning to Piscataway. Since making her collegiate debut in 2019, Lynch has started 78 games and played nearly 6,900 minutes. For Rutgers, she has been a steady presence regardless of how the roster changes.

Over the last four years, Lynch has also sprinkled in some offense. She recorded nine points, including a career-high five in 2021. Her impact has not gone unnoticed, and for her, the decision to return didn’t require any convincing.

“Coming back for a fifth season was a no-brainer for me,” Lynch told Rutgers athletics. “I’m not ready to leave, and the time I have had here has been so special. I gained a second family with every person I have met, and I have gained a second home here at Rutgers. I’m not ready to say goodbye yet.”

READ: With confidence and presence, Sam Kroeger is thriving for Rutgers women’s soccer

During Lynch’s run on the banks, Rutgers soccer has had some of its most successful seasons in recent memory. In 2022 they began with a historic 9-0-0 start and were ranked fourth in the nation. During the 2020 and 2021 campaigns, they made deep playoff runs.

However, after not winning a game in the Big Ten Tournament last year, Rutgers has unfinished business. With Lynch in the mix, Rutgers is in good hands. She will be looking to write an unforgettable ending to her college career and change the program’s recent success in the postseason.

The Philadelphia Union II is an American professional soccer team based in Chester, Pennsylvania, competing in the MLS Next Pro. Le Guennec will join a club that is affiliated with the Philadelphia Union (MLS).

Le Guennec has the potential to be an impactful player for the USL club. The Rutgers defender helped lead the Scarlet Knights to their first Big Ten Tournament Championship in school history. Le Guennec was chosen Defensive Player of the Big Ten Tournament for his effort on defense.

Rutgers men’s soccer draws Ivy League champions in NCAA Tournament opener

Rutgers men’s soccer hits the road for the NCAA Tournament.

Rutgers men’s soccer’s return to the NCAA Tournament will see them travel to UPenn on Thursday. The Scarlet Knights booked their postseason berth on Sunday with a 3-1 win over Indiana at Yurcak Field.

It was a strong season from Rutgers, who are 10-4-6 overall and have a 4-2-2 record in the Big Ten. Sunday’s win over Indiana saw Rutgers, seeded second in the Big Ten Tournament by virtue of their regular season finish, win their first conference title on the men’s side.

Despite losing to Rutgers in Sunday’s Big Ten Tournament championship game, Indiana is ranked No. 13 in the NCAA Tournament. The Hoosiers finished fourth in the Big Ten regular season.

Four Big Ten teams made the NCAA Tournament. In addition to Rutgers and Indiana, both Ohio State and Maryland got the postseason nod.

The winner of Thursday’s match will play at No. 3 Syracuse on Sunday.

Rutgers women’s soccer dips in the latest United Soccer Coaches rankings

Rutgers women’s soccer sees their spot in the poll tumble after two losses this week.

Rutgers slid in the latest United Soccer Coaches rankings this week after two losses in the last week to close out the Big Ten regular season.

In a disappointing end to the season, No. 20 Rutgers lost their last two games of the regular season at Michigan and then on Sunday at Michigan State. They finish the regular season 13-3-2 with a 5-3-2 mark in the Big Ten.

The Scarlet Knights finished the regular season atop the conference and were the preseason pick to end up winning the Big Ten again this season (an honor they shared along with Penn State). They ended in a four-way tie for fourth place.

They will face No. 12 Northwestern on Sunday in the Big Ten Tournament.

There are a total of four ranked teams from the Big Ten in this week’s poll. In addition to Northwestern and Rutgers, the Big Ten is being paced by No. 6 Michigan State. Also in the rankings are No. 25 Ohio State.
