Emily Mason named defender to Watch by United Soccer Coaches

Rutgers soccer standout Emily Mason makes a preseason watchlist.

Over the last two years, Emily Mason has become vital to Rutgers success. Due to her ability to chip in on the attack and shut down offenses, the Flemington native has proven to be a matchup nightmare. As a result, she has gained national recognition and was recently named a 2023 player to watch by the United Soccer Coaches.

Mason joins a select group as only 35 players to earn a spot on the list. She is the only Rutgers player on the list and one of the two Big Ten players. As Mason looks to build on the best season of her college career, she now has added motivation.

In 16 games last year, the talented junior recorded seven points and added three goals to her resume. Due to her play, Mason earned Third-Team All-American, All-Big Ten First Team, and All-North Region First Team honors. While she appeared in nine fewer games than the year before, Mason made an impact every time she stepped on the field.

[lawrence-related id=29177]

Additionally, Hunterdon Central Regional product contributed to eight shutouts. Mason continued to improve in her second collegiate season while gaining special recognition.

At the beginning of the 2022 campaign, Mason missed the first two games while playing for the United States Youth National Team at the U20 World Cup in Costa Rica. She previously won gold with the USYNT at the Concacaf Women’s Championship and the Sud Ladies Cup in 2021.

When the first whistle blows and the 2023 season begins, more eyes will be on Mason than ever before. For the talented back defender, it is a situation she has been waiting for.

Rutgers men’s soccer moves into a tie for third place in the Big Ten after Friday win over Michigan

Rutgers men’s soccer beat Michigan on Friday night.

A tight 2-1 win over Michigan on Friday night has pushed Rutgers men’s soccer into a tie for third place in the Big Ten. With one conference match left to play, the Scarlet Knights are within striking distance of potentially finishing with a top-two finish in the conference.

The win sees Rutgers sitting at 7-3-5 (3-2-2 Big Ten, 11 points) and tied on points with Ohio State for third place in the conference.

Michigan came into the match short-handed with several players missing due to illness. This led Chaka Daley, in his eleventh season with the Wolverines as head coach, to keep a defensive posture, playing two low blocks. to absorb the pressure from Rutgers.

The visitors managed to outshoot Rutgers (11:7) even as Rutgers held the edge in shots on goal (5:3).

Goals by M.D. Myers in the first half and Ian Abbey in the second half lifted Rutgers to the win. The strike by Abbey was a tight finish:

Rutgers closes out the season with a match at Penn State on Oct. 25 and then an out-of-conference game again UCLA on Oct. 29.

Rutgers women’s soccer remains top five in latest rankings

Rutgers women’s soccer remains one of the top-ranked teams in the nation.

There was no movement for Rutgers women’s soccer this week, as the Scarlet Knights check in at fourth in the nation in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll.

It has been a solid start to the season for Rutgers, currently 9-0-0 (1-0 Big Ten). On Sunday, they beat No. 21 Ohio State 2-0 at Yurcak Field to start their Big Ten schedule on a strong footing.

Last season, the Scarlet Knights won the Big Ten regular season and advanced to the final four of the NCAA Tournament.

It gets real for Rutgers real quick as the schedule is set to heat up for the Scarlet Knights.

On Thursday, Rutgers plays at Penn State. Despite it being an early season Big Ten game, it is a huge contest for the Scarlet Knights in their bid to repeat as conference regular season champions.

Penn State and Rutgers were tied as the picks to win the Big Ten this season.

Future Big Ten program UCLA tops the poll followed by Virginia and North Carolina. Duke checks in at fifth in this week’s poll. In addition to Rutgers, the Big Ten is represented by No. 9 Northwestern and No. 17 Penn State.

Wisconsin, while not ranked, is receiving votes (14 votes, tied for most of any unranked team). Ohio State, with their loss at Rutgers, is unranked and received seven votes.

A total of five Rutgers men’s soccer players were honored by the Big Ten on Friday, with four players being named to respective conference teams.

Rutgers finished the season 9-5-2 (3-4-1 Big Ten) and will play No. 22 Indiana in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals on Sunday. Indiana is a third-seed in the tournament.

Junior attacker Jackson Temple and defender Vincent Borden were each selected to the All-Big Ten Second Team. It was a breakout campaign for Temple, a product of the Philadelphia Union Academy, who had six goals and two assists on the season. He closed the season strong, scoring a brace last week in a 4-2 loss at UConn and then having a goal and two assists in Sunday’s 4-0 win over Ohio State.

Borden has very quietly emerged as one of the premier centerbacks in the Big Ten, a graduate student who combines prototypical size and strength with a calming presence on the backline. He has tremendous vision and the ability to play the ball confidently out of the back.

Two New York Red Bulls Academy products appear to be a part of the team’s core moving forward and are seen as such around the conference. Midfielder Matthew Acosta (unanimous choice), along with freshman defender Joey Zalinsky, were both selections for the All-Big Ten Freshman Team. Both players were regulars in head coach Jim McElderry’s Starting XI this season.

Norwegian midfielder Ola Maeland, who scored in Sunday’s win over Ohio State, was chosen as the Rutgers’ Big Ten Sportsmanship Award winner.

Last week, the women’s soccer team absolutely dominated the All-Big Ten selections in their sport.

Rutgers women’s soccer continues to find new firsts for the program

Rutgers women’s soccer continues to excel as they close out the regular season with a win at Illinois.

The list of firsts continues for Rutgers women’s soccer following a 3-0 win at Illinois to close out the regular season.

Not only did the Scarlet Knights capture the school’s first Big Ten title since joining the conference in 2014, but the women’s soccer team put together the first undefeated Big Ten season in school history as well. With the win at Illinois, Rutgers finished the season 10-0 in conference play, becoming the first women’s soccer program in the conference to not drop points (only wins, no losses or ties) since Penn State in 2005.

Rutgers now goes into next week’s Big Ten Tournament as the No. 1 seed.

The Scarlet Knights are 15-2 on the season and have won 11 straight games.

Allison Lowery got the game-winner at Illinois in the first half, scoring in the 37th minute. That was followed by Amirah Ali’s brace in the second half to put an exclamation point on what has been a tremendous regular season so far for Rutgers.

The men’s soccer program is 8-4-2 (2-4-1 Big Ten) and lost on Friday 2-1 at a very good Michigan team. They play UConn on Tuesday at Yurcak Field.

Rutgers has captured its first Big Ten title and first Big Ten title outright, the Scarlet Knights women’s soccer team celebrating a road win with a conference title as well.

On Sunday, the Scarlet Knights 1-0 home win over Michigan State saw them capture a share of the conference title. Now on Thursday with a win at Indiana by a 2-0 scoreline, Rutgers took the Big Ten’s women’s soccer title.

Goals by Amirah Ali and Frankie Tagliaferri on either side of halftime secured the big win for the Scarlet Knights. Rutgers finishes their regular season at Illinois before the Big Ten Tournament begins next week.

The Scarlet Knights are ranked ninth nationally in the latest United Soccer Coaches Poll. They are 14-2 (9-0 Big Ten) and have won 10 straight games. They have yet to drop any points in conference play heading into Sunday’s regular-season finale.

Last season, the women’s program finished 9-3-4 (6-2-3 Big Ten), losing in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to Clemson on penalty kicks.

Super freshman Nico Rosamilia on Rutgers men’s soccer hot start: ‘We have a lot of chemistry’

Rutgers men’s soccer got a big breakout with freshman Nico Rosamilia scoring two goals.

[mm-video type=video id=01ffnv8311wvb0krw2pt playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01ffnv8311wvb0krw2pt/01ffnv8311wvb0krw2pt-eafa2c79db53a91f9906a21ff300ac16.jpg]

Nico Rosamilia is coming off a breakout performance, the Rutgers freshman scoring two goals to pace the men’s Scarlet Knights soccer team to a 2-1 win over Saint Joseph’s on Monday.

For Rosamilia, it was the first two goals of his collegiate career. The attacker has earned a regular spot in head coach Jim McElderry’s Starting XI this year, impressing with his composure on the ball and vision in his distribution.

He was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week for his strong performances against Saint Joseph’s and last Friday in a 3-2 win over Lehigh.

“The momentum that we have as a group is special. Being a freshman since I came here, the coaches and the players have just taken me in as family and they’ve been great,” Rosamilia said following Monday’s win over St. Joseph’s.

“We have a lot of chemistry as a group and I feel like it carries over to the field. We had a great result tonight, we put in a team effort and I feel like the six games, it is a complete team effort. Coach likes to talk about strength in numbers. We had a lot of guys who put in work in training and it translates over the field.”

Rosamilia is a product of the vaunted New York Red Bulls Academy, one of the top academies in all of MLS. The academy has produced a number of international players such as Tyler Adams and Matt Miazga. Several members of the Rutgers men’s soccer team have been a part of the Red Bulls Academy.

Rutgers is undefeated through six games to start the season, their 5-0-1 record is a testament to a team that is clearly growing in their third year under McElderry. Last season, Rutgers took a big step forward in their development as a program, going 4-4-1 (all in conference play).

This weekend, Rutgers opens up their Big Ten schedule when they play No. 11 Indiana (4-1-1). The Hoosiers made the national championship game last year.

“They’re a great group, made it to the national final last year, we know that. But we have all the confidence to go in there, away from home, and get a result and win the game,” Rosamilia said.

“It definitely gives a lot of confidence but it is nothing that we haven’t done the first six games is putting in a 90-minute effort and hopefully get a win on Friday.”

In addition to Rosamilia’s nod from the Big Ten, Rutgers right back Thomas DeVizio was named to the Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week. DeVizio produced two assists in Rutgers win over Lehigh.

After suffering their first losses of the season over this past weekend, Rutgers women’s soccer team slid down the rankings a bit in the latest United Soccer Coaches Top 25 NCAA DI Women’s poll.

Rutgers, No. 9 in the nation a week ago, is now No. 16 in the latest poll.

Rutgers was upset on Friday at home in a 4-3 loss to Princeton, now 5-0-1 on the season and No. 22 in the poll. Then Sunday, the Scarlet Knights lost at Georgetown, who are 3-0-4 and ranked No. 25.

On Thursday, they have a home match against Drexel before they begin the Big Ten portion of the schedule with a Sunday match against No. 8 Penn State (6-1-0).

Rutgers is one of three programs from the Big Ten ranked in the women’s poll with No. 21 Michigan (6-1-0) rounding out the conference’s representation alongside Penn State.

The men’s team remains undefeated, beating St. Joseph’s 2-1 on Monday and outlasting Lehigh 3-2 at home over the weekend.

The men did not receive any national votes in the most recent poll. They are 5-0-1 on the year.

“I don’t think we played our best soccer tonight, but was proud of the fight,” Rutgers men’s soccer coach Jim McElderry said after the match.

“We were able to keep our legs fresh and generate some great offensive chances with Nico [Rosamilia] and Ola [Maeland] coming in as substitutes in the first half. We were able to disrupt enough of their momentum in the second half to gut out the win. Plenty to work on this week ahead of a tough one at Indiana.
