What NFL experts are saying about the Panthers’ reported hiring of Dave Canales

Here’s what the experts think about the Panthers’ reported hiring of new HC Dave Canales.

The man tabbed to be the new head coach of the Carolina Panthers is a bit of a mystery.

As first reported by NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport on Thursday afternoon, the organization is closing in on hiring Dave Canales to lead their sideline. But with no NFL head-coaching experience and just one season as an offensive coordinator, is the 42-year-old a good hire or not?

Let’s take a look at what some of game’s top reporters, experts and film buffs think about the move:

Greg Olsen on new Panthers GM Dan Morgan: ‘This guy is highly intelligent’

Greg Olsen praised Panthers GM Dan Morgan for his skills as a communicator and a talent evaluator.

Carolina Panthers greats Greg Olsen and Dan Morgan never crossed paths on the playing field. But the former still recognizes the game of the latter—both on the gridiron and off of it.

Olsen joined Tuesday’s episode of The Pat McAfee Show and talked a bit about Morgan’s promotion to the president of football operations and general manager posts. The former pass catcher waxed poetic about the former defender.

“You remove the playing days and you remove the Mike linebacker that wanted to rip your face off, Dan is a really intelligent guy,” Olsen told McAfee. “Cut his teeth through Seattle, then he went to Buffalo for a little bit before he came to Carolina. He’s a really highly-respected guy. He’s very intelligent. I think he uses a lot of his playing days—lessons learned, now he’s carried it into the front office as he’s made his journey now to this position.”

While those playing days were shortened by numerous injuries, Morgan made quite the impact for Carolina over his seven-year career. His best season came in 2004—when he recorded 102 tackles, 2.0 sacks and two interceptions en route to his first and only Pro Bowl nod.

Morgan started behind the scenes as a scouting intern for the Seattle Seahawks in 2010. He’d go on to rise up the ranks, picking up stints as the director of pro personnel for the Seahawks and then as the director of player personnel for the Buffalo Bills before being hired as the Panthers assistant general manager in 2021.

Olsen believes that track record gives Morgan a chance to thrive in his newest role.

“This dude is like highly intelligent, great communicator, great evaluator of talent,” he added. “Listen, and I want them to do well. I live here, I want my kids to cheer for the home team. I want them to succeed, and hopefully Dan does that.”

Julius Peppers on Panthers’ promotion of new GM Dan Morgan: ‘Love it’

Franchise legend Julius Peppers is loving the Panthers’ decision to promote his former teammate Dan Morgan.

The fans may not be in love with the Carolina Panthers’ choice for their new general manager, but a pretty familiar name is.

On Monday, the team bumped assistant general manager Dan Morgan up to the their president of football operations and general manager positions. When the announcement was released, specifically on the team’s official Instagram account, franchise legend Julius Peppers popped up in the comments with a stamp of approval:

Morgan and Peppers came to Carolina as first-round picks in back-to-back drafts, with the former going 11th overall in 2001 and the latter going second overall in 2002. The two went on to lead the Panthers defense for seven seasons together, a run that included an NFC South title and the organization’s first-ever Super Bowl appearance.

Due to continued injuries, Morgan would hang up his cleats in early 2008. He finished his career with 390 combined tackles, 7.0 sacks, five interceptions, three forced fumbles and a Pro Bowl nod.

Panthers fans react to promotion of new GM Dan Morgan

Panthers fans aren’t exactly ready to party out on Mint Street following Monday’s promotion of new GM Dan Morgan.

Carolina Panthers fans absolutely loved Dan Morgan as a player. But what about as a behind-the-scenes guy?

On Monday, the organization announced they have promoted the former linebacker to the team’s president of football operations and general manager positions. Morgan now takes the lead on the front office after a three-year run as the assistant general manager.

So, how are the fans feeling now?

Here are some of their reactions to the big news:

Panthers fans react to Derrick Brown’s Pro Bowl selection

Now, all Panthers fans can call Derrick Brown a Pro Bowler.

Now, we can all call him “Pro Bowler.”

On Friday, the NFL announced a number of replacements for the upcoming 2024 Pro Bowl Games. Among the alternates now headed to the all-star festivities is Carolina Panthers defensive tackle Derrick Brown, who will be taking over for future Hall of Famer Aaron Donald.

Here’s how some Panthers fans reacted to Brown’s first and well-deserved nod:

NFL fans mock Panthers during C.J. Stroud’s phenomenal Wild Card performance

The Panthers caught some strays throughout C.J. Stroud’s sparkling (and victorious) playoff debut.

The Carolina Panthers aren’t even playing anymore and they’re still getting the business over on Twitter.

On Saturday, No. 2 (not No. 1) overall pick C.J. Stroud became the first rookie quarterback to win a playoff game in almost 15 seasons. He led his Houston Texans to a dominant 45-14 Wild Card Round victory over the Cleveland Browns, passing for 274 yards and three touchdowns in a near-perfect performance.

And the 2-15 Panthers, who passed up on Stroud this past April, caught some strays throughout the stellar showing . . .

Panthers fans react to firing of GM Scott Fitterer

Panthers fans are going to have to find another GM to bestow the laser eyes upon.

Well, now we can definitively say that we’ve seen the end of the laser eyes—at least for one man.

After three seasons, the Carolina Panthers have decided to part ways with general manager Scott Fitterer. Here’s how their fans are reacting to the “Black Monday” news:

Panthers fans react to DJ Chark’s goal-line fumble

Luckily for Panthers fans, they may not have to tweet about DJ Chark for much longer.

Carolina Panthers wide receiver DJ Chark may have proven that he’s a good guy, but he hasn’t exactly shown that he has good hands.

In the second quarter of Sunday’s regular-season finale against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Chark spoiled what should have been a phenomenal 43-yard touchdown pass by quarterback Bryce Young.

That may have been the cherry on top of a disappointing campaign for Chark, who also caught the ire of fans last week for dropping three passes over four plays.

Here’s how they reacted to his latest folly:

Twitter reacts to David Tepper’s weak fine, unapologetic statement

A slap on the wrist from the NFL and a sorrowless statement from Panthers owner David Tepper isn’t going over all that well.

On Tuesday, the NFL officially handed down a $300,000 fine to Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper, who appeared to have tossed the contents of a cup towards Jacksonville Jaguars fans this past weekend. And Tepper, shortly thereafter, issued a statement regarding his “unacceptable conduct.”

Well, based on the early reactions over on Twitter, the statement lacked an apology and the fine lacked a number or two.

Here’s how folks are reacting to today’s news:

Panthers fans react to David Tepper’s drink-tossing video

Panthers fans react to David Tepper’s party foul on New Year’s Eve

The Carolina Panthers just experienced their most shameful Sunday of the 2023 season—and that’s saying something since they’ve had quite a bit of those.

On top of being shut out for the first time in 21 years and clinching the No. 1 overall pick for the Chicago Bears, the Panthers faced more embarrassment courtesy of owner David Tepper on New Year’s Eve. A video showed Tepper appearing to angrily dispose the contents of a cup towards the crowd at EverBank Stadium during the team’s 26-0 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

And this, of course, got Panthers fans going to work on Twitter . . .
