No Cardinals D-lineman cracks top interior defender list

They have star power in J.J. Watt and promise in Zach Allen and Rashard Lawrence, but will count on steady contributions from many.

The Arizona Cardinals believe in the defensive linemen they have. They did little this offseason to address it, re-signing Michael Dogbe and adding Kingsley Keke to small contracts. They did not use a draft pick on a defensive lineman either.

They have J.J. Watt, a three-time Defensive Player of the Year, Zach Allen and Rashard Lawrence to man the starting jobs.

While Watt has been a star in the league, not even he cracks the list of the NFL’s top 12 interior defenders, according to Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar.

The list includes two players in the NFC West and five players the Cardinals will face in 2022.

Watt only played in seven games last season before suffering a serious shoulder injury that kept him out until the Cardinals’ playoff loss in the first round.

His 2021 season ended with only 16 tackles and one sack, although he did have 10 quarterback hits and a slew of pressures in seven games. He is still incredibly impactful but he was not one of the best defensive linemen in the league.

Allen showed promise with a mostly healthy season for the first time in his career. He had 48 tackles, four sacks, 14 quarterback hits, an interception, three fumble recoveries and one defensive score.

The Cardinals are very high on nose tackle Rashard Lawrence, but he has dealt with lower-leg injuries each of his first two seasons in the league. His promise is why they have not gone out to get a veteran nose tackle.

Their depth includes Dogbe, Keke and Leki Fotu.

Watt is the biggest star of the group but the rest are mostly unknowns in the league. They are hoping for solid, consistent play from most players, but getting big contributions from Allen and Watt.

With big seasons, perhaps in a year from now, Allen can make his debut and Watt can make his return to the top interior defenders in the NFL.

LOOK: The NFL’s best interior defenders, per Touchdown Wire

Aaron Donald is naturally No. 1. Who else makes the list?

The Arizona Cardinals know all about good defensive tackles. They face Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald twice a season. They have one of the best to ever do it on their roster in J.J. Watt, although he seems to be in the twilight of his career.

LOOK: The NFL’s best edge defenders in 2022, per Touchdown Wire

The Arizona Cardinals did not get anyone on this list, but see who the best edge defenders are in 2022, according to Touchdown Wire.

Edge defenders on defense are critical. They create pressure for opposing quarterbacks, disrupt plays and get sacks.

They are often the most exciting defensive players on the field to watch.

Isaiah Simmons not yet on NFL top linebackers list

Simmons had a productive 2021 season. Perhaps he can crack the NFL’s top LB list next offseason with a great 2022.

The Arizona Cardinals believe in the talent of young linebackers Isaiah Simmons and Zaven Collins, as they selected both in the first round in 2020 and 2021. Collins didn’t play much as a rookie but is expected to be a starter in 2022.

Simmons also played sparingly as a rookie but made major strides in his second season. He finished the season with 105 tackles, 1.5 sacks, four tackles for loss, four quarterback hits, four forced fumbles, an interception and seven pass breakups.

He made many plays but also gave up a few.

He understandably did not make the list of the NFL’s top linebackers in 2022, according to Touchdown Wires’ Mark Schofield.

Two linebackers — San Francisco’s Fred Warner and Los Angeles’ Bobby Wagner — made the list.

Simmons could be on this list a year from now.

He is taking on a leadership role on the team. He plays multiple positions and has rare size/speed/movement abilities.

Defensive coordinator said earlier this offseason that the next step for Simmons is to make more plays and give up fewer.

It isn’t unreasonable to believe he can finish 2022 with 110 or more tackles, four or more sacks, multiple interceptions and more.

If he does that, with his ability to run, cover and tackle, he could crack this list next offseason.

San Francisco’s Fred Warner leads the list. Check out who else makes the cut.

The Arizona Cardinals will count on former first-round picks Isaiah Simmons and Zaven Collins in 2022 to be their two starting inside linebackers. They have rare size and athleticism combos but have not yet emerged as great NFL players. Simmons could be on the verge, but he is not there yet.

LOOK: The 32 NFL team logos, ranked

Check out where your team is ranked, according to For the Win.

NFL team logos are pretty unforgettable. But which ones are the best?

That, of course, is highly subjective and usually someone’s favorite logo is probably that person’s favorite team.

What about a somewhat unbiased ranking? For The Win’s Christian D’Andrea gives us the full rankings from best to worst, No. 1 to No. 32.

They are below. Read the full post for the analysis as to why.

Check out who the best lockdown outside cornerbacks in the NFL entering this season.

In NFL defenses, two of the most important things teams must be able to do are rush the passer and play in coverage. There aren’t nearly enough good cornerbacks in the league.

But who are the best?

Touchdown Wire’s Mark Schofield gives us the 12 he believes are the best entering the 2022 season.

Cardinals’ Marco Wilson understandably falls short of top outside CBs in 2022

Wilson had a rocky rookie season but perhaps can ascend to this list in a year.

The Arizona Cardinals had to lean on cornerback Marco Wilson last season, even though he was just a rookie drafted in the fourth round out of Florida. He certainly had his ups and downs.

He finished the season with 48 tackles, four pass breakups, two forced fumbles and did not have an interception.

It is understandable why he did not land on the NFL’s top outside cornerbacks, as ranked by Touchdown Wire’s Mark Schofield.

The team has high hopes for Wilson as a boundary cornerback but he wasn’t there last year.

His coverage stats were not great, according to Pro Football Reference.

He was targeted 74 times and quarterbacks completed 52 of those passes (70.3% pass completion allowed) for 588 yards and six touchdowns. His passer rating allowed was 120.8.

Over the first half of the season, he played mostly mistake-free, although he made few plays. He came very close many times. He gave up more plays in the second half of the season.

Entering 2022, he will again be a starting cornerback. He has the physical tools to be great. With a year under his belt, perhaps he can ascend enough to make this same top cornerback list next offseason.

NFL helmet logo rankings: Where do the Bucs land?

See where the Bucs land in this ranking of the best helmet logos in the NFL

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers made the wise decision in 2020 to admit a terrible aesthetic mistake from 2014, ditching their awful uniform design for a return to their championship roots.

After six years of alarm-clock numbers and other awful fashion decisions, the Bucs went back to the look they wore starting in 1997, with a handful of small adjustments.

But does Tampa Bay’s current helmet logo rank among the league’s best designs?

Not according to our good friends at For The Win, who ranked the Bucs’ helmet No. 26 in the league, out of 32 teams:

Here’s what FTW’s Christian D’Andrea said about Tampa Bay’s dome:

Buccaneer Bruce will likely return this season. He’ll serve as a stark reminder this team should never given up creamsicle orange.

You won’t get any argument from me on the creamsicle love, but Tampa Bay’s current look is one of the best, most iconic getups in the entire NFL. It’s not too busy, but has enough detail to be eye-catching. The colors work well together, and the pewter helmet is a unique color no other team has.

There are plenty of other helmets that deserve to be ranked lower than Tampa Bay’s, creamsicle or otherwise.

Cardinals have bottom-10 roster in talent, per PFF

In PFF’s rankings of the rosters of all 32 NFL teams, the Cardinals come in at No. 23.

The Arizona Cardinals elected this offseason to mostly bring back key contributors from their 11-win 2021 season for 2022. They lost receiver Christian Kirk and linebackers Jordan Hicks and Chandler Jones, but they also added receiver Hollywood Brown and guard Will Hernandez. They also signed cornerback Jeff Gladney, but he later died in a car accident.

This team was a playoff team last season and had double-digit wins. For a while, the Cardinals were the best team in the NFL.

However, Pro Football Focus does not believe this is a very talented roster in 2022. PFF ranked all 32 rosters and the Cardinals were in the bottom 10, ranked 23rd.

Their greatest strength from Kyler Murray and DeAndre Hopkins, while their biggest weakness is at cornerback, where there is uncertainty for the third spot on defense.

The X-factor for 2022, though, is linebacker Isaiah Simmons, who could be a breakout stud in his third season in the league.

As for the rest of the NFC West, the Los Angeles Rams are No. 4, the San Francisco 49ers are 13th and the Seattle Seahawks are ranked 29th.
