The Arizona Cardinals had to lean on cornerback Marco Wilson last season, even though he was just a rookie drafted in the fourth round out of Florida. He certainly had his ups and downs.
He finished the season with 48 tackles, four pass breakups, two forced fumbles and did not have an interception.
It is understandable why he did not land on the NFL’s top outside cornerbacks, as ranked by Touchdown Wire’s Mark Schofield.
The team has high hopes for Wilson as a boundary cornerback but he wasn’t there last year.
His coverage stats were not great, according to Pro Football Reference.
He was targeted 74 times and quarterbacks completed 52 of those passes (70.3% pass completion allowed) for 588 yards and six touchdowns. His passer rating allowed was 120.8.
Over the first half of the season, he played mostly mistake-free, although he made few plays. He came very close many times. He gave up more plays in the second half of the season.
Entering 2022, he will again be a starting cornerback. He has the physical tools to be great. With a year under his belt, perhaps he can ascend enough to make this same top cornerback list next offseason.
